If you read one of my previous post i talked about how the Indians are more structured in combining ideas in establishing tech companies, it must not be in silicon valley they are all over the 50 states.. Most Nigerians i have seen here from my experience hoard information cos they dont want you to be better than them, but the Indians have formed a formidable force in the IT sector, well organized people. They share information between themselves and with their combine effort and money they start up something brilliant with the initiator the CEO. You will not find one Indian person working in a warehouse or doing menial job except in a gas station which is owned by his brother or relation.

Mind you Indians are the richest immigrant in America, because of just one thing which is INFORMATION between themselves, so much so that they rarely borrow money in starting a tech company.

On the other hand Nigerians haven't gotten to that point yet because of our mentality, hoarding of information, "you must not be better than me in america" mentality. More so we are not organised like the Indians, and we have not created a niche for ourselves, we have a long way to go.. Right now some individuals who i have met are trying to create a niche in IT sector for Nigerians to compete with the Indians, its achievable but its gonna take a long time because of our attitude and mentality. I spoke on here about how my friend in IT security is trying to raise Nigerians to get into the field and i brought it up here but our Mentality will not let us see ahead.. I even mentioned how much he makes a year, i was labelled a liar. I am not giving up but will gladly train those who are willing to join the train to become a force to reckon with in the IT sector.

So, as I stated earlier, the reason I put my resignation at my CNA job was that I heard UPS (united parcel services) has a cool program where they cover your tuition fees in exchange for you working for them, the program is called "earn & learn". I filled out the application, online, the hiring process was identical to the one I went through at Amazon. I got the job.

The UPS facility I work at is called CACH which stands for Chicago Area Consolidation Hub. Its HUGE, for comparison, it's much bigger than MMA1 & MMA2 put together. Any UPS package that comes to Illinois or any state around, must come here first. The packages arrive in trailers, we unload, sort and load them according to their various destinations. In a day, we process more than 3million packages. If you have some data to spare, check out this short video on vimeo https://vimeo.com/194397590

The job is hard. Harder than anything I've done in my life.
At my first week at the job, we underwent training. I got hired on a Monday along with 15 other persons (12 guys and 3 ladies). Prior to that, we were adviced to come to work with work boots with high backs and non-slip soles. I quickly looked for a second-hand timberland boots on ebay and got a pair for around $20. My first day on the job, we were ushered into a classroom of sorts and "welcomed" to the UPS family by some persons high up in management. Our trainers were two ladies, one black and one hispanic. The first two days consisted of us watching videos of the do's and dont's of the facility. How to stack boxes in the trailer, how to avoid hurting yourself when working etc etc.

The third day, we were split into groups: Loaders, Unloaders and Small sorts. *Loaders load the trailers, unloaders unload trailers and small sorts handle the small packages which could be crushed by the bigger packges if not handled correctly. I was picked to be a loader by a process which I don't know.

I wasn't joking when I made that statement and even now, having worked 4+ months here, my stance hasn't changed. UPS is no joke at all and now we've entered "mber months, the workload is starting to increase. The almost 100% increase is as a result of the holidays and discounts which has led to more people shopping and with an increase in shopping, there would definitely be an increase in shipping; we call it peak season. One of the compensations for the strenuous work is the fact that you can ascend the economic ladder and get promoted to a higher paying role. During my training, I was told that after your first 40 days at work, you can apply to become a part time supervisor which would would give you a 100% wage increase, part-time package handlers (like me) are paid $10.35/hour and part time supervisors are paid $19.35/hour; so right from the onset, becoming a supervisor has been my goal. Being a part-time supervisor, you would not typically be loading trailers, your job description would be directing the package handlers on what to do. This mindset is what got me through my initial days at this job, each day, I dreaded going to work cos it was (and still is) physically tasking for me but I persevered. Slowly, my days kept adding up and I had passed the 40 day mark. I approached the manager handling my area and informed her of my decision to become a part-time supervisor, she inquired about my attendance of which I told her I haven’t missed one single day of work since I started. Initially I thought becoming a supervisor would be a straight-forward process but it appears I was wrong.
After I approached the manager, I noticed she was reluctant to give me the information I was seeking so I took matters into my own hands. I asked around and was told I had to go to a certain department and inform them of my decision to become a supervisor, then they would give me the information I needed so I did exactly that. When I contacted the department, I was given a username and password to a website, these login details enabled me take a test consisting of 100 questions and the duration of the test was 1 hour. The test consisted of mostly maths and brain-racking logic questions; the exam was kinda tough. Some minutes after I had taken the test, I was sent an email congratulating me on passing, I was ecstatic, anticipating the wonderful increase in wages and eager to start receiving my bigger paycheck but as the saying goes, Man proposes, god disposes.

Like I said earlier, I thought my promotion would be a seamless process but I was in for a rude awakening. After I passed the supervisor test, I approached the manager again and informed her that I had passed the test, I keenly watched her reaction and I saw she was surprised when I gave her the information. There was one more hurdle to cross, I had to pass another oral test which would be administered by the manager herself. She gave me one sheet of paper containing some information to study, she told me to memorize it and return to her for the final test when I've memorized the whole thing by heart.

It took me a week to study and memorize the whole thing (as a result of school work). When I was certain I had crammed the thing, I approached her and told her I was ready to take the next test and that was when I received the shocker. She told me she would not be promoting me because people came and told her that ever since I had passed the supervisor test, I started "carrying shoulder up" that I don't work as hard as I used to and that my workload has dropped drastically. That she would not promote me until after peak season (January). I was dumbfounded and couldnt speak. I felt hurt that someone would go to this length to make sure I dont get promoted, I could fee my anger rising but I calmly asked her where she got this information from and she gave me two names: one guy and one lady. The most hurtful part of this all is that the guy who went and told her this garbage is the same person who would be acting all nice and friendly to me. This incident showed me that people are not who they seem to be. After this happened, I started keeping to myself more. I was so angry that I almost quit but I held myself, I decided not to make a decision in anger. I waited till I was calm, I weighed my options and decided to let the anger go, wait till January and see what happens.

Recently, a close friend of mine contacted me that she needed my help, that she was moving to her new apartment so she needed me to help her drive the truck that would be carrying her furniture. Mind you, I have not driven such truck before but I asked her when, she told me a date, I checked my calendar and figured I would be free that day, so I accepted. The day came but I woke up late and saw lots of missed calls from her. I quickly showered, dressed up and started driving to her place, she lives in Chicago southside which is 45 minutes from my house. I got there and met up with her and we proceeded to the place where we would hire the truck, the company is called UHaul. After hiring the truck, we checked the distance and discovered that it would be 1hr 15 minutes drive because the major road we would have followed was closed down due to a major accident, I mad! Since I had promised to help, I couldn't back out anymore. When we got to the place, we loaded the furniture onto the truck and decided to eat something before we start heading back to her place. Right next door, was this place called Mary's Burgers. SO we walked in and sat down.
It was only when we had sat down I discovered that the place is a gay bar. Only same sex couples were seated on all the tables. I tapped her and mentioned this to her and she saw it too. We also noticed the stares from the other persons seated at the place. We had barely sat down when a waiter (or waitress) approached us, handed us a menu and asked us what we were going to eat. I noticed the waiter had a deep masculine voice but feminine features (wide hips, breasts etc); it turns out the person is a tranny.

I ordered a chocolate shake along with fish and chips, while my friend ordered a beef sandwich. The food was good and the chocolate shake was the best I've had since I entered this country. I had to locate the toilet (they call it bathroom here) to relieve myself. I discovered they have three toilets: one for male, one for females and one for people they call pansexuals (or gender neutrals) that is, people who choose that they dont have a gender grin

When time to pay the bill reached, the bill was presented to us in a koi-koi shoe grin grin

Hmmm..... don't fear the constant hard work at UPS!....look at it as being paid to be a gym rat.... lifting the heavy cat litter and dog food boxes etc...Amazon alone will keep you in tip top physical condition. Aren't you more muscular?...tighter body?!
On promotion thing...... bro...take this from me... don't ever let your co workers know you are going to be in a better position. Don't let them know you're in school studying...that you did the test to be promoted...about your academic qualifications.....etc...do such is to put a target on your back...especially....being a foreigner. See yourself as a crab in a bucket of others.....you try to get up..they will pull you down...there's a hole in the bucket...quietly exit
Your manager is no different...you can rise to replace her....you have no friends in a competitive environment. I doubt whether the manager will have you promoted in January.... don't they need PT supervisors now for the sooo many helpers they hired for this peak period?...that they will lay off in January?
Just keep on working at the same pace you used to. If you do get promoted...be very mindful of how you speak to your wards..... what you say and how you say whatever....people here are very sensitive to the way they are spoken to...speaking to someone in a condescending way is a big no no. Just saying.
You live and you learn......just go with the flow.

Frank, you're too naive about America. Don't let the fake smile and seemingly friendly conversation fool you. Mark my words,
She's actually looking into getting you fired.

Actually, this period would have been the perfect time to try you for a supervisor role while you still help out package handlers.

Watch your back.
