The want to hike the school fees, which is about to take effect, shows that the students are never put into good consideration. Who doesn't know that the rate of students, who find it cumbersome to foot the fees, surge as the day goes by?

Instead of increasing the school fees, I think it's essential that faulty facilities be repaired, and unavailable essential facilities be provided, in order to ensure a comfortable learning environment; and, also to aid the normal learning pattern, so proper understanding can be achieved.

Before I got admission into RSU, I, through personal effort, understood certain programming language. I didn't bother to continue with it, because I thought when I get admission to study Computer Science, I'll keep the study of programs intensively going.

But, immediately I got in, the school itself killed my zeal for studying programming languages: no provision for testing codes, no standard computer laboratory to explore as a computer scientist.

How many times do we use the supposed laboratory for studies?

On this effect, I'm of the opinion that the decision towards the amount of school fees to be paid in Rivers State University — the hike in the school fees — should be revisited.

Let's look at it from this angle; there are parents who get sustained with the little money they accrue from menial jobs just to make sure they're not bereaved of food, because of poverty. These parents literally always count the years remaining for the graduation of their child(ren) to check how long they'll continue to squeeze to secure a certificate.

Is it minimum wage? It's really not enough to effectively cater for a family.

Do the universities now place more value to the financial benefits, instead of pursuing a good learning environment — and considering the financial stands of most students?

I'm sure, that's it!

Look at the nook and crannies of the school, you won't say there are no areas which need proper attention. We incessantly hear complaints about the economy, but students still struggle towards paying their bills.

These words are written to touch few areas of the reason why the school fees shouldn't be hiked!

News like these are only a matter of time.

University education is never a cheap venture as most Nigerians assume.
Nations that offer free education at university level demand a huge tax and make sure a good percentage of those graduates are absorbed into their labour force productively unlike ours. This way, most beneficiary of the free education end up paying back more than what they enjoyed as free training. I am talking of nations like Germany Finland Ukraine.

They know the graduates must be productive so they select the best minds based on merit unlike Nigeria were it is largely based on connection and sentiments.

If we had adequate facilities, school friendly environment, competent lecturers and an educational system that seeks to improve students in character and learning, then a hike in fees won't generate so much fuss. When you have teribble hostels, lecturers who see themselves as gods, generators blaring from those people who photocopy materials, empty libraries, then it just doesn't justify the need for increase in fees

why is the service shitty in the first place?
Because assholes don't wanna pay appropriately for it.
Each university should have like 200k tuition and watch things change!
Fvck Nigerian students,i will buy a carton of champagne if fees go up to 300k.
U know why?so that my kids can get a very good education home

You should know that government plays a part in funding the schools. They are public universities for a reason.

Are you saying the schools utilise their funds properly? or government keeps up with its responsibility to the schools? We both know that's not it. Some federal schools already pay close to that about by the way.

Me just looking at I binabo like.... Some dudes would say pay high for quality education. I don't blame them.
You see, there is difference between public and private schools. But I'll not ho into that, I'm only here to address the writer.
Dear Ibi, I understand your plight, I don't think you know me but I'm sure you must have heard of me. My secret of success as a student of computer science in that school is not as a result of my dependency on the shiity labs, or faulty whatever they give to us. Leturers teach outdated technologies, they go to Wikipedia, do a copy and paste then claim they've done research and dish out to students.
I understood this earlier so I decided to depend on current trends.
I have loads of videos that helps me, manuals, ebooks most I get for free others I pay huge amount of money.
I understand you are not doing it for only yourself but if you want to rekindle your programming fire, ditch those lecturers and their shitty labs.

To all those saying that university should provide facilities before increasing fees... I say to them... With which money?

Most Nigerian universities are broke. Add the fact that it is going to take 3trillion naira at least every year to make sure universities stay well equipped.

You cannot ask universities to give what they don't have, unless you want them to take hefty loans to provide the facilities which would make things worse

I pay 402,000 as school fees and my department have no departmental building. we use same building with physiology and Anatomy.Class rooms are not enough and each lecture will have majority of the class standing outside for lectures because class is filled up. There is no light in the area my school is located and they are doing nothing about it but medicine students pay 402,300. I just keep telling God to pls help me and punish those embezzling the money. How can we pay 402,300 and we are suffering. The cadavas we use for practicals are so bad but we are paying 402,300. I don't have a problem with the fee but all I ask is that the fees should be used to better life and make the environment more conducive for learning.
So even they hike the price, they will still not make the school better

And why haven't you taken them to court since you know the institution is properly funded?
