Bedc eedc both are scarm and are not worthy to handle any power distribution.

This is partly a result of when you sell such critical publics asset to yourself and your 'friends and cronies' who have no idea of how the electricity industry works.

Actually.... Discos are the weakest link in the electricity industry. Their performance is appalling and grossly inadequate.

Available generation capacity is about 7000MW but discos can/will only distribute about 3500MW due to their inadequacies and inefficiencies.

So there's a large generation capacity under-utilisation due to discos.
How bro? I do not know where you got that 7000MW from but know that actual energy generated differs from generating capacity. Since energy cannot be stored, if the DISCOs distribute far below what they got from the grid as you have suggested, it is their own loss because they have to pay for a service they are not selling. Most of the DISCOs have expressed their willingness to exit the system time and time again, should government be ready to refund a part of their investments in the sector. The government is still the biggest bottleneck of the Power sector. But then again, they seem helpless. The only policies that can palcate the rot in the Energy sector, if enacted, will seem anti-people.

Earlier today, civil society, communities and electricity consumers gathered in their numbers to protest in Benin city, Edo state against the purported plan to renew the operational license of Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC).

The Public Relations Officer of the Edo State Civil Society Organizations (EDOSCO), Osaze Edigin said the peaceful demonstration which will last for three days is to draw the BPE attention to the “incompetence of the distribution company.”

Osaze said the Performance Agreement the company entered with the Federal Government elapses on the 31st of October, 2018 and not the proposed extension of December, 2019 by the BPP.

He further disclosed that “BEDC operational Licence must not be extended or renewed. BPP and NERC cannot be compromised”.

The protesters said, "Today, we are in collaboration with other interest groups and critical stakeholders, reaffirming our stand that the operators of the BEDC do not deserve an extension or renewal of operational licence for a day later than the 31st of October, 2018".

"We vehemently object to it and sue the BPP and NERC to pursue the happiness of the people whom they swore to serve".

"The BPP and NERC should not display the posture that suggests that they have been compromised by the DISCOs as Nigerians in Edo, Delta, Ondo and Ekiti states are seriously expectant of the non extension and renewal of the licence of Vigeo Holdings Limited, the operators of the Benin Distribution Company (BEDC)".

You would have been right except you missed the wheeling capacity of TCN which is roughly 5GW(even that is a doubt now as some section of the grid are not adequately maintained)

Furthermore, generating capacity is far different from generated energy due to constraints. The major constraint is usually gas which keeps quite a number of our gas turbines idle.
By the way, if the gencos generates and tcn wheels out, the discos have to distribute or the system collapse(EE guys can confirm this). Plus they pay for the idle capacity too.

TCN is actually trying. They are working on their transmission capacity. I think it should be around 5000 - 6000MW.

Discos haven't done anything significant to increase their distribution capacity. Nothing at all. Nothing!

I would have agreed but I am an insider. The discos are quite poor and have no clue about what they are running.
A disco gets a bill of 8billion monthly from NBET(excluding interest charges) but only collects roughly 4.2billion from customers.
They pay NBET just 2.5billion and keep the rest. Out of 1.5, they have a labour and mtce fee of roughly 1billion. That leaves just 500m for expanding the network. Its not enough.

MOST DISCOs don't get billed up to N4bn monthly. You got it wrong there.

Let me give you an example.

TCN says 'Disco A' should take 700MW and distribute/sell to customers.

'Disco A' says no and takes only 300MW (load rejection), intentionally leaving many other customers without power.

One common ridiculous and unacceptable reason for this load rejection is 'they can't collect the bill for 700MW' from customers. Same discos that intentionally won't give customers prepaid meters.

Discos are not ready to do real electricity business in Nigeria. They are just profiting from a broken system via estimated billing with apparently no intention to improve their network and capacity.

So we can all agree that no one should expect any significant improvement in power supply in Nigeria as long as we have same set of discos.

You are right. Discos are clueless about the business and I'm guessing you already know why.

Like really? Who buys a disco without knowing what's on ground and what's required to make it run?

The discos refuse to distribute energy even when available to reduce load, therefore forcing generation to shut down turbines.... The way they load shed these days is majorly for this purpose. Since they couldn't improve thier ATC & C losses.. Thats the only way to go... Nigeria can never have light with this operating system

Meters aren't the problem cos bypassing is paramount with nigerians.... The load rejection is the main thing, cos if u give meter and reject load, u lose both ways....

Their protest should be against the minister of Darkness Fashola, as BEDC and other distribution companies in Nigeria only distribute what has been generated and transmitted to them. What sector is even working under this government of the dullard?
The truth be told, BEDC are not performing well at all. I had seen complains from on this forum about them. I wonder how come other distribution companies are doing better in terms of delivery.

The major problem ain't generation of power right now but distribution. DISCO's are to procure the energy required and distribute/sell to the final consumers but get as low as they can ration and throw estimated bill around to citizens who don't know they have a right for what they consume and pay for
