The government was (is...) run by old white men and has been for a long time. When the National Weather Service came into being, it was run by these same people. Such old men have many old-fashioned notions about women, i.e., that they are tempestuous, unpredictable, and wild if unable to be kept in check. Given this, it made sense to them to name hurricanes after women rather than men, who do not undergo a monthly hormonal cycle. copied |
