Thank you jare. They like silencing the voice of women.

Awon were.
My dear you are right

But the women of today are now exposed and educated

That's why you see their women speaking out loud

When it comes to tradition, we women knows our limits

But now, we have broken away from their shakels

I can just imagine what Debe would have said if he was in her place smiley

Too much of hatred is injurious to one's health!

Rest in peace Debe!
Debe did not hate her. In fact, Debe's mother hailed from Enugu State. Also Debe's mother was not married by Ojukwu. He was a product of pre-marital affair before Ojukwu finally got married. That's why the position of first-born son was given to another person, cos his mother was not married by Ojukwu. Bianca's problem comes from Ojukwu's 2nd son who usurped Debe's position of first-born son cos his own mum was the first wife of Ojukwu.

Ojukwu was not yet married when he had him (Debe) as a result of pre-marital affair with the deceased's mother.

I have never heard of such tradition. We learn everyday. Rip to him. Ojukwu must have gotten married at a very tender age, to have produced a sixty two year old
Ojukwu had him before he finally got married to his first wife, Njideka.

Very good! I like this. First time I learnt that Ibo daughters do not have same right as sons and cannot inherit their fathers...oh you should see my anger and fume at such injustice. That even widows are kicked out and off their husbands properties....i was terribly upset and sad for Ibo women.

Im glad you are winning the war and securing social justice for yourselves and daughters. Even Shariah law respect women and daughters when it comes to inheritance.

Very good post, thank you dear!

Exactly.
This same Debe was the main Ojukwu son that was seriously fighting Bianca
These reporters should have ask his brothers to confirm about his death instead of harassing Bianca. Debe even sue her to court several times and even dragging properties with her together with the others. Upon that Debe was publicly fighting her senatorial ambition and saying that she is not his fathers wife. Does he think his father will be happy with him in the spirit world? Karma is a bitch. If you maltreat a widow, your wife will end up same way when you die. Fact of life
Debe was not the one fighting Bianca. It's the 2nd son.

Is he not the son who gave interview against her senatorial ambition saying she should go back to her fathers house?
People should beware of their actions when they are alive.

Yes the ibos were among the tribe that wishes and do practice to silent women

They do so because of insecurities form the man's side

But just look around your neighbourhood, any home you see that the ibo woman is the breed winner, she doesn't take such shits

Once they want to enslave her with her efforts to move the family forward, she brakes out and let lose

The family won't want to experience such once she starts so they will avoid the second attempt

Yes they are in the habit of frustrating widows but their targets are women who choses to be house wives while their husband struggles

Once you have an income be dependant on yourself, save and plan and achieve greatness they won't come near you

I am an ibo woman and married to ibo man, I am bold and when I talk, I respect myself but won't give you a single chance to take advantage of me

If we continue like this they will leave us alone

The yorubas gives out their daughters in marriage but still she has an inheritance in her father's properties

The Hausa's respect women even they prefer their daughters/wives to be home makers and let the men struggle

Any woman that wants to depend on a man should be ready to be in silent and speechless

I/we are not staging a war but we want our social freedom

If we can't get it through dialogue we can as well get it through court

Either way, it's must favour us

So whats the beginning of the tradition of denying females, whether as a daughter or a wife, any belonging or ownership in the man's property?

If a man has been caring for his wife while alive i think she has become accustomed to a certain expectation of livelihood and dependency.

By cutting her off from that livelihood after her husband dies she now becomes dependent and vulnerable to the new owner of that property, perharps the brother or uncle or even son of the deceased. Does she now become a wife to the new inheritor?
Whats the social wisdom behind this custom?

Why couldn't that livelihood continue as a trust on the deceased's property and until such time the widow finishes her term of grieving and can make for herself the choice of a new direction in life...whether as a bride to deceased brother ot not. Why is it forced and she is left with no choice?

Ibo women have no rights in their culture, period!

They face abuse and discrimination. As they marry into other cultures and find they are given roles which was uncommon and denied in their own culture they gain voice to speak out. Many have spoken out and lately Supreme court ruled to change some of these discriminatory practices in Iboland.

1. When Ibo woman marry Yoruba she moves up in society. She gains new rigjts and liberties.

2. Yoruba women that marry Ibo move their men up in society and open their eyes to new aspects of traditions and ethos they had never known.

3. When Osu move into Yorubaland they gain new economic freedom and social liberties. They discover they can own properties and are the same with everyone else.

4. Even children born into Yoruba/Ibo relationship learn etiquette of social relationships. They learn respect for elders and the false ego and loudness which is the hallmark of Ibo tradition is tamed in them and replaced with Omoluabi. Most important....they are trained to wake their father with greetings and felicitations...they are taught the value of "Eku...", and no product of such intermarriage ever use the known and widely accepted Ibo custom of rousing the father early in morning with a commanding shout and foot kick in the ribs.

I dare any Ibo to challenge these points. I have details and even reports from your homeland, as far back as 1950s to bring up as evidence. I will open a brand new thread just to showcase it.

So wake up and know your place and stop comparing your women's restricted behavior in their custom as equal with the practice everywhere else. No it is not...

Una don provoke my anger this afternoon. We go talk. I no go work today i dey here all day.
Which part of Igbo land have placed your stinking feet? Where did you study Igbo culture?

If you read my lines very well

I am against such practice

Your questions ought to be directed to the men not me as a woman

If a husband leaves something for the wife and children to inherit, it's no bodies business to forcefully snatch it from the wife

They don't have that right or power to do so

But they hide themselves under the disguise of tradition

Uptil today I am yet to see where tradition documented such acts

But I maintain my stand that it is as a result of insecurity from the side of the men

Igbo men and full white facial hair are like 5 and 6. I noticed Igbo men even in their 40s already have full white or gray facial hair. Like Nnamdi Kanu. You can never see this in Yorubas or Hausa-Fulani but you will see it in other Biafran tribes and African Americans too. Another proof we are not the same people with yorubas and hausa-fulani. I wish I had gray beards!
that's very true bro,my dad didn't even have full white facial hair in his 50's,you could barely see any strand of white facial hair then. I don't know about now that he's in his 60's cos he clean shaves all the time. but the hair on his head is black. he's Yoruba. Someone like E-money probably started growing white facial hair in his ,20's cos he has a lot of it in his 30's.

That's his first son by Margaret Udeh later married to Chief Michael Ogbogu. Chief Sylvester Debe Odumegwu-Ojukwu was an ex-Police snr officer and an international lawyer. He was born on August 3rd, 1956. So, Ojukwu was 23 years older. Ojukwu was a known philanderer. That should not come to you as a surprise. I was very close to Chief Debe in his lifetime. He was one of my mentors!
