There was a standoff between officers of the Nigerian Customs Service and trailer drivers earlier today in Aba, Abia state. It was gathered that the Customs officials came to seize a trailer container in Aba after they were allegedly settled in Port-Harcourt, Rivers state capital. The trailer drivers who protested against what they termed as extortion by the officers - blocked the Port-Harcourt/Aba express road to register their anger. The drivers blocked the major highway with their trailers as a protest not to pay another money to the Custom officers who insisted the driver must move the said container to a specific location until he settled them. The incident attracted a large number of crowd which gathered to resist the officials. Like Peter Obi lamented sometime ago when he traveled by road from Lagos to the South East that Customs are active when it comes to SE, you hardly see them working in the northern borders where trailer loads of items come in daily illegally.
