Fabulous7:It is being celebrated because all previous administrations totally and ignorantly failed to develop this sectpr foolishly wadting money on perishable assets such as roads to the detriment of a better, cheaper and more effective means of transportation. It is worth celebrating. To see how blind administrators can be to the 300 pound gorilla in their midst it is even happening today. The Wike government has totally abandoned the monorail project initiated by the past Rivers State government. Even the Lagos state intracity rail network is in the cooler while the presnt government wastes money constructing flyovers and expanding carraigeways, to accomodate more traffic that should ordinarily be carried by rail when it is obvious roads need drains and street lights making them expensive to construct and maintain. The waste that is the endless reconstruction of the Apapa accesses could have been unecessary if rail lines were present and mandatory for cargo leaving the ports. You have to celebrate when hitherto wasteful ventures are being shelved for more effective and prudent use of scarce resources. Roads are big waste of resources. They may provide quick transportation fixes but are long term money pits. More roads, more maintainace down the line. In the Niger Delta at least it should be a no brainer. We shoukd have a deliberate government policy of winding down the expansion of the national road network in favour of rail transportation, That is, no more dualisations of major highways and only strategic penetration into areas not covered by the network. |
