I've had numerous losses, I'm going to talk about the one I've tried to excel anyway.

I started goat production business 6 years ago with only theory knowledge no experience. I bought 45 red sokoto breed of goats and started feeding them without experience and professional to guide me through, I did online research about goat production business prospect and I got crazy information from online farmers who never owned livestock and couple with the fact I'm an animal scientist which I felt I'm good to go that was the greatest deceit I deed to my self.

To cut the story short I lost all the goats due to wrong management, diseases and worms and lack of good information. I lost over 700k Naira which include goat cost, so called consultant fees, feed and medications.

Note: I now have vast experience in goat farming with over 200+ matured female goats, over 80 bucks and plenty of kids too in my farm. I didn't give up and thank God for the support I got from my wife.

Never venture into a business without practical experience.
Don't be carried away by online bloggers who write crazy stuff about ROI

Poultry Farming.

I invested approximately N12m in building a poultry for layers. Mistake I made was I buying 1 Acre of land which cost me N4M to fence, built Pen house with N3.5M,built a 5 bedroom farm house with about N3m, constructed a concrete scaffolding (with 2 standard rooms, one as store the other as Gen. House) to mount the water tanks for N1.5m

Having done all these, I struggled to get 600 layers, the rest is history.

for a successful poultry farming,right medication count for almost 50% success already, others might be biosecurity, feeding ratio and so on
when I started my broiler biz,I went in with 14 broilers,lost all due to lack of practical knowledge,after a while,I did 6 birds,this time with enough knowledge, 5 got matured successfully,same with all other aspect of bizness,practical knowledge is Paramount
About the profit,with the right know how,100 layers birds should give you average of a crate per day but mind you,you feed them for about 18 weeks before they start laying
So u need intense capital when you want to venture into layers,that ll be my point on that gift.

I ran a photo printing business from 2010 with a Chinese Doli 0810 brand new bought at 6.9m with acccessories from Skysnap office, Lagos. I had average of 500k profits monthly from the business and could even top 2m in December/January sales.

I decided to open a new branch and ordered 2 fairly used DKS 1550 from the UK at about 24,000 pounds (+6m) in 2011 while the brand new price from Skynap Lagos was 12m each. I thought i was saving money but never knew i would never enjoy the machines. I had to repair and replace the parts in the DKS 1550 machines and it was very expensive at about 3m total but then markets went down.

i never recovered from the cost used in acquiring the machines and i had to shut down the entire operation as our profits fell as low as 50k a month from 2 branches. The money generated from the newly acquired machines was not upto 300k.

Total cost for 2 expensive machines=6m+3m+500k (other logistics) = 9.5m - 300k= 9.2m tired down.

I read everything too as I always look out for the bad deals to avoid. Well, the first step is to have a laptop and an internet enabled phone. If you have those 2 down, you should be then start looking at the startup capital which should be anywhere around 50 to 150k. Not much when compared to the tradition brick and motar biz models.

Try to take an experienced farmer to the farmland, he may even tell u merely looking at the soil or looking at the farm yield of the neighboring farm. But if he's not not sure u can take a sample of the soil to any agric research institute that u know but that of Ibadan is most recommended in Nigeria.

Its actually a very tricky business that involves alot of regulations and monitoring.....people pay according to their consumption... Its from 3k a month to 5k... 17,hrs daily.... Being the entrepreneurship person that I was, I set out to give it a try.

Left my base in Ilorin to try it out.

Long story cut short.. I invested about 160k into it. Lost about 54k

But I'm unbothered tho, I'm still giving it two more shots next month before giving up on it.

I'm attaching a screenshot to summarise everything I spent.

Note I didn't include my transport, cus I was driving my car myself and it was some sort of tourism to me.

Lesson learnt,
Never test a business based on what people say and don't try any business with money you can't comfortably lose (I learnt the last part from cryptocurrency)

Invested 350k in altcoins in January and had to sell off in September for 46k after HODLing thinking it'll yeast.
Lost another 1.6m to gift cards in September.
Coupled with occasional 100k, 150k, 50k loses throughout the year

All in all, I still don't think I lost anything significant.. I just feel I got more experienced.

For anyone trying to venture into crypto currency is at this time. I advise you just invest your money somewhere else Sha.. the good ol days are over..
