I did not pay in my own case but it took longer than one week before i got a genuine landlady though before then i got contacted by few people including scammers and i viewed two houses.

Facebook is another good tool to use, search for renting in your city and you will see different groups you can join and place an ad or view houses advertise for rent.
speaking of renting an apartment. when one is renting a house from a private landlord can one negotiate the rent? like can I pay 650PCM as against 700PCM. Abi person no fit price house?

You can negotiate ....... The longer the contract you sign, the better your negotiation power......

If you mean houses or flats, Use Google to find flats and houses where you want. I prefer getting flats or houses advertise by Zoopla because is a bit cheaper and gives you monthly breakdown of all bills i. e monthly rent, council tax, water bills, House insurance e. t.c

Point of correction ps this is my own issue and I pointed my self, I wanted to apply for USA visa and I asked a question and no one replied, I got denied and apply again and I got it and my hubby av gotten his permanent resident, av joined him. I am only asking for a friend ps. I av not stayed in the UK more than two months on visiting visa

Dear Sir / Ma, I got really troubled reading your posts as your constant use of ps made me wonder which one is the main script and how many post scripts you have to add.

If you must abbreviate 'please' ,it would be better to use 'pls' . I actually worry how it's easy for you to type other words in full but can't spare an extra space for L.

Sorry to derail o grin

Definitely you can though £700 is the likely rent cost for a bed room house while £650 goes for a flat

In fairness to him though, he didn't say the citizenship is valid for 10 years but the ID permits travel to EU for 10 years.

[quote author=fatima04 post=62102073]This thread is about Life in the UK for Immigrants

Sooooooo, I have landed, all Glory to God Almighty

* Your visa application experience /adjustment status experience
:application was straightforward, I applied for me alone, just filled my details. Coy did payment and submission.

* Picking up your BRP (disadvantage of not travelling within the 1month vignette and protocols to follow in picking it up)
:I don't know the disadvantage cos I picked my BRP on the same day I landed.

* Travelling experience (airlines and airport to use)
Emirates came through for me(tho, coy booked the ✈) great in-flight entertainment, food was okay

* What are the immigration rules to follow?
As stated on the visa- no public funds!

* Visa renewals and what you are entitled to after 5yrs. I'm sure this has been dealt with on this thread and other UK ones. Hoping to get the ILR and Citizenship thereafter

* Can you open a bank account while still in Nigeria and what bank has the best customer service and plan) I settled for HSBC on getting here cos of less hassle and few documentation. Did not even booked an appointment, just walked in tendered passport and letter from employer, that was it. In about an hour, I had my account opened! My card and pin were promised to be sent in 5 and 7 days respectively with a promise of paying me £10 for every promise not met. Some how, my card and pin did not come as at the promised days, I called them up to remind them of not keeping up with their promise and I was paid the £20! Hmmmmmmm, I'm still scared sha, cause where I'm coming from, nothing goes for nothing undecided

* Which State/suburb did you settle in and why? Up North! Omo wase orise something

* Public Transportation Vs Driving in the UK
For now, Na public transport win am ooooo. Even back home, Lagos driving Dey fear me talk more of this right hand thingy. Driving is a necessity though, but I'll stay on public lane first

* Driving in UK? How long can you use your Naija driving license before you get a license? Naija license can be used for a year

* Where you live and why you like it or don't like it? Tips on choosing the right neighborhood.(Internet plans, electricity company to use, setting up a house)I love where I live for now, as desire changes, I might consider moving

*Renting Vs Mortgage (pitfalls to avoid when choosing mortgage)Still gathering info on this

* Using a credit card (things to avoid)Hmmmnnmnmm. My bank offered me and I declined cause I'm yet to fully understand this CC gist. Abeg, I need someone to lecture me in an a-b-c manner on this! Oga just wise and lexusgs430, your input is highly solicited.

* Childcare for kids below 5 (cost and how do you go about choosing a minder)
Didn't come with my kids for now cuz of the high childcare cost as previously mentioned

* Business Tips you can do both over there and abroad
No idea

* How do you send money home (without much loss)Not started yet, still finding my feet!

* What does the NHS fully cover? Every other thing except eyeglasses and dental surgery and stuff, not very certain

* Tips on raising kids in a western environment as an African. I just know I'll cross that bridge when I get there(when my kids come over)

* What culture shock have you experienced?
Their accent up north is different from the average one we see on TV shocked. I would have had more shocks, but you guys already prepared me for that

* Tips on how to cloth and cope with the cold weather
The wrapping up no get part 2 oooooo. My hot water bottle is my baby for now

* Nigerian restaurants and market in your location
Nigerian restaurant will be a luxury where I am ooooo. We are not up to 10 blacks in the whole of my community (I am d second naija person at the moment)

* How much does your family survive on in a month? I survive on about 1k a month. Ill soon copy @imnotconfused and draw up a budget plan

* Developing Nigeria from Abroad (How to go about it) Farfar.......... Shey me I Don develop finish ni?

* Nigeria community in Glasgow (my locality) The few Nigerians here are really good with helping each other. Soon, a concrete community will emerge

* Fun things to do: going to the gym, beaches, shopping etc. First two will be after winter though

*It's not been easy, but it's worth it! For those that came alone, how did you manage without your family? If not for the fact that it's been a long journey to get here, homesickness woulda sent me back. Anyway, lemme not bore the house with my tales.
Keep up the good work, y'all.

Welcome. If you live around Glasgow, there is a vibrant Nigerian community. There are a few Nigerian/African shops and restaurants as well. The Asian shops also sell some foodstuff we use back home like plantain, yam, beans etc.

Welcome to the land. You can collect the CC you need it for credit building, and in order to get some basic things in this country you need a good credit score, only thing is don't use up to 50% of your allocated amount and pay as you use it or end of the month.

Staying alone in this country isn't easy especially when your kids and wife are back home, just try and quickly have them over as soon as possible to quickly adjust and settle down as well but in all you will be fine. It's all a matter of time.

All the best in your career and stay. Come give us pictures btw to brighten this thread na

One thing you should avoid is an illegal high called ecstasy............ grin

Mortgage vs Renting? By renting, you are paying your landlords mortgage (aka dead money)

By paying your own mortgage, you are indirectly saving for your pension and building financial equity. Applying for a mortgage has its own complexities (deposits etc etc), but worth it on the long run.....

Credit Card - - - - That dreaded debt card, view it has a system of the banking sector giving you e money, while you pay back with real money...... It's not free money and can become very expensive money, if spent carelessly.... PayPal credit card offers a credit card facility without the card, offering 0% on purchases (a good start up credit history building tool).......

NHS covers your visit to the GP, hospital admissions etc etc..... Although you would have to pay a prescription fee, to collect medications at the pharmacy. Dentist and opticians visits are payable (unless you are on benefits)... But kids go completely free on all ratios (drugs, dentists, pharmacy) etc etc etc. If you kids require braces, best to dump it on the NHS, before they turn 18 (all for free) etc etc etc

To send money home, download this apps (WorldRemit & Azimo). Compare rates and use the one that tickles your fancy. Money gets paid directly into recipients account...

With regards bringing up kids, a lot to learn...... To avoid safeguarding issues and social services on your head.... It's a tight rope to cross.... You would cross that bridge, when you get to it or navigate the waters accordingly.....

And if you buy a brand new television at the shops, the retailer sends your details directly to TV licensing.... If you don't have a TV licence, just buy your TV from ebay or gumtree jejely........ And avoid opening your door indiscriminatly, to avoid TV licence wahala...... grin wink kiss

Your qualification for a mortgage depends on loads of variables.
Ability to provide all the necessary required financial information and most importantly provide the deposit and all associated costs required. Could take between 6 months - 10 years or more (depends on how eager you want it).........

If you have a PayPal account, you can give it a try. Some retailers like Samsung offers 0% interest free periods(4 - 12 months), if paid through PayPal credit card.

All your eBay shopping binges, could also be put on your PayPal credit card account etc etc etc

You get an instant response through PayPal credit card application portal........
