MY USER EXPERIENCE/OPINION ON THE REDMI NOTE 5
.
After using redmi note 5 for a few days.. Here are my thoughts!
It's a pretty phone (i got the rose gold). The battery backup is amazing. I am a heavy user, yet it takes me through the entire day (on 3g network), and i would still have 25-30% battery left by the time i get home.
.
.
The camera is good also.I love the fact that the front camera has a flash to take great photos at night.
It has some amazing features which makes for an enjoyable user experience.
.
.
Now, to what i want everyone to be aware of (because people just come here, say "I am now a proud owner of xiaomi..."wink and boom! Off they go, without dropping any review to help prospective buyers decide if it's the pros and cons of the device are what they can live with or not.
.
.
Before anyone comes for me, asking if am expecting flagship features on a $130 device, take a few moments to ponder on all i will point out here. The cons i have noticed are basic features even a 20 dollar phone should have and handles decently, without and hassles.
.
.
1.There are a lot of ads in the phone's system apps.. Themes, wallpaper, fole manager, music app, video app, security etc. It's like MTN, it's everywhere you go on the phone. I had to read up a thread on the miui forum on how to turn off the ads from everywhere it is displayed.
.
.
Now that's really low from xiaomi! I have used devices, from the high end flagships to feature phones, never have i encountered ads in the stock music player or other system apps.Like the phone has already been paid for, so why the ads? Even apps with pro versions gives the user an ad free experience after paying.
.
.
One day xiaomi may roll out an update and you find the option to turn off ads missing, then what next? The user gets stuck with a phone that has ads everywhere.
.
.
2.The audio output when using earphones is beyond poor on my device. This isn't an issue of "change your headphone. I am an audiophile so I don't slack on buying good earphones. As soon as music is turned on, through the speakers or headphones..
.
.

I can observe that there is no clarity. The voice of the singers come off as croaky and muffled, with a lot of noise. I tried my senheisser mx 365 earphone, a langsdom headphone, a sony headphone and lastly zealot sparkle.. It was the same. I went on miui forum, a lot of people were having the same issue even as far back as march.
.
.
The mi audio enhancer/equalizer is of no use. It seems to normalize a bit after you have listened to music with it for a while. Still you can't get that crispy clearness. I recently got a tecno torchlight phone that uses memory card for N3800.
.
.
I transfered some songs there and the audio output was clearer and way better than the xiaomi redmi note 5.That's a big let down because i listen to music daily. I have sent a feedback to xiaomi, and included audio logs report. I doubt if they will ever address that issue.

.
.
I am hoping it's something an update can fix, I am on Miui 10 right now, but i am not even ready to update the device for fear of the unknown.
.
3.The updates rolled out have bugs. Even the "stable versions" are not so stable. You update to a new version.
.
.
You discover your camera functions differently, pictures are unclear, some functions have disappeared, volume is low or your battery drains fast. With the issues relating to updates i read about, i am not even sure i want to update my device to avoid saying "had i known"!
.
.
4.It doesn't display glo network messages fully. When i dial
*127*0# to check data, on gionee m6 and samsung S8,the pop up message from Glo about my data balance is displayed fully. I never experience any issue with that using those phones. On the Redmi note 5 , the message is slashed and just one third of it is displayed with the heading "class zero message".. I run two to three data plans concurrently, glo night plan, weekend plan and normal monthly..
.
.
I don't get to see my balance for about two of them , just the active one shows whoke d remaining is slashed out. I placed my sim on other phones and i got tbe full message, so i know it's a xiaomi issue.
.
5.The stock music player doesn't play .wma files, and the stock video player doesn't play. mkv files
.
.
These have been my observations so far.. It's a pretty sleek phone, battery lasts long and the pictures are pretty decent for the price. The audio clarity issue is a big turn off. I won't be using this phone for long because of that.

Thank you sis for this clear and straight forward review . I hope by now , those asking for what a premium device is would understand.
I'm done in this forum as I've gotten answers to what I am here for . kiss

Please it's your money, buy what ever you feel is premum to you. I haven't seen anyone here forcing anyone to buy any phone here , if you're not OK with xiaomi move on !! Whoever wants to buy has over 3k+ pages to read up in this thread and make up their mind if they want it or not. Is there any perfect phone out there? Buy what suits you please

My experience over 4 years on Xiaomi... Only experienced ads once... Mi 4... Since den i never see ads for my phone maybe because i know wer to turn of ads. I have never seen ads anywhere in phone since mi 4, i turn off all recommendations and ads option.
For upgrades, i never pass up the chance to upgrade... Not in my lifetime... And I've always enjoyed all the updates.
For audio issues ehn... grin grin... I go give Nokia coloud pop for 2k kpere and if u suffer bad audio ehn make i 24.
lol.. Are u sure oga. Google sennheiser earphones.. It's mad o. If i used that and the audio output is still crap. Then it's a sofware issue, not because of headphones used. For OTA updates, hope i won't have to backup my files? May just risk it.

I will just be managing it. No energy to set up my apps and files again.

I haven't had a phone go under the knife in less than one year of usage but it took my Redmi Note 5 about 6 months of usage to do so. I can't tell you how sad I feel seeing the dents and scratches the repairer left on the phone.

Infact I do, I have a celbro that does QC 2.0 and 3.0, MTK pump express and adaptive fast charge but does not do OPPO VOOC and USB PD but my floveme charger does all of the above. The celbro ships for about $9 and the floveme for $5.

I also have a croutch charger that only does QC 2.0 and 3.0, while my oukitel follow come priced at $12 only does MTK pump express. My mi dual USB QC brick priced at over $20 can only do QC 2.0 and 3.0

So yes bro I know what u're talking about.
Am eyeing that Floveme charger too

The matter tire me o. Tecno phone that I got for 3800 has a better audio output than the xiaomi right now. Once u buy, and ur phone works ok.. Just remain on that version. No one knows the bugs and issues the next version would introduce to the phone
Install a good third-party music player such as jet audio and check your earpiece too

Well to be fair for good user experience, it is advisable one do a clean flash /factory reset of devices when moving from a major update like (OS or MIUI upgrade in the case of xiaomi). it solves 80% of any ish most times but sometimes person go just tire to do am as the stress of setting up again.

Get a pendrive if necessary and have a back up of files(movies, audios, docs), have a back up of your apks, backup app settings to cloud for supported apps. This reduces the stress of "starting from beginning".
