The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, has said Nigerians are in a difficult situation over the choice of presidential candidates for the forthcoming 2019 election.

He spoke weekend in Abuja on the topic: “The Church in Politics: Towards the election year 2019” at an event organized by Catholic Action -Nigeria.”

According to him, it would not be in the interest of the church to support one political party against the other; but to identify and stand behind those who can offer good governance for the people.

He said the new political parties that would have joined forces to produce a credible alternative presidential candidate failed to do so due to selfishness and ego.

“We see this clearly in our country Nigeria. We hear politicians often speaking about serving the nation. It has now become a huge joke. Even the simplest village man knows that the people in authority are not serving us. This is the major cause of our problems. Rulers become dictators instead of servants of God and for the people.

“The prevalent idea that politics is a rotten game for only dishonest people is a tragic error, no matter how prevalent it may be in our society. We know that it is extremely difficult to go against this trend in our public life. The fear in fact is that the nation has been captured by corrupt people who have acquired massive power through the wealth they have stolen from us. They thus monopolize all channels of decision making,” he said.

Onaiyekan said that the country is in a great dilemma as ahead of the 2019 General Elections, as it appears that the people are faced with “horrible tragedy of a choice between two well-known undesirable candidates.”

“It is a pity that whereas there are over 90 political parties, there seems to be no viable alternative to the two mega parties that have failed us. Where is the alternative? It is a pity that they cannot come together to form a viable alternative,” he said.

D only Nigerian election dat was fought and won on d basis of credibility and sincerity of d candidates was d 1993 presidential election. Ever since dat ill-fated election, Nigeria's Presidential election is now simply a popularity contest between which candidates becos if not why would someone who has taken Nigeria to a next level hardship b talking of coming back? Atleast Atiku can claim not to have ruled yet

A nation where a certificateless individual is leading professors isn't ready for revolutionary development. Are we under some sort of curses,? I do not understand. Why do we continue to recycle failures in government?
As far as i am concerned we need a third strong force (party) to take power from these bunch of failures.
Let's #EndRecycling of corrupt, visionless, and greedy politicians

O am most disappointed in the youths who support these failures, continue to mortgage your future

Cardinal Onayeikan has spoken the truth unlike that stupid idiot of winners chapel (oyedepo) who's always frolicking with PDP.

Most of your men of god aren't neutral they get too involved with politicians despite the fact that this folks are corrupt, pastors should be the ones telling them to desist from their corrupt ways but its the other way round.

The guy called oyedepo is the worst of them all, he's a PDP sympathizer even though he hasn't come out to say it.

The way he has been going about criticizing buhari he never criticized OBJ nor GEJ infact he was rubbing hands with them. This just shows that just like the citizens the moral principles of their men of God has been corrupted as well.

GOD HAS FORSAKEN NIGERIA!!

GEJ was a phD holder yet he plunged Nigeria to suffering.

Osinbajo is a professor of LAW yet Nigeria has worsened under him.

Nigeria doesn't need a bsc holder before we can get to the promise land, a secondary school drop out who's visionary, brutal and will differentiate the wrong from the right at all times is all we need.

Certificate won't get us anywhere its the individual who will.

Nobody is a credible candidate for 2019.

Nobody cares.
Nobody will fulfill his election promises.
Nobody will provide Jobs.
Nobody has the vision to take this country to the next level.
Nobody is the man for the job.

A vote for Nobody is a vote for progress and development.
