Well, it isn't totally a bad idea but given the fact that Nigeria rail system is a tree network, instead of a matrix or rail lines, areas that do not have functional rail lines would suffer. For example, Onitsha, a commercial centre does not have any rail line crossing it. Will traders go as far as port Harcourt to trans load their goods to trucks?

This should not be for every location.

Must all goods be moved via rail?... you dont force people to pick a choice, you make people pick a choice..

Give them a reason to.

And do you think the owners of these trucks care about the reasons. There have been so many accidents, explosions and containers falling on cars that this rail system should have been the only mode of transporting the goods years ago.

Wow this will be so awesome. Some African countries do it already. At least tanker explosion will reduce drastically.

Okay!!!! Okay!!!!

Lets just assume this one time that this story is true!!!!

It's still going to be Lagos to Oyo against Lagos to the remaining 35 states...

This policy is not gonna have any effect on the traffic on that road.

When the railway system of 20 states have being fixed and linked between themselves and also Lagos,

Then we can then talk!!!!!!!

This is the height of madness. U refused to fix the eastern ports, u refused to link the SS and SE by rail and say u wanna ban trucks. This government is trying to test the will of the people.

You don't get it.. I'm not even an APC apologist. But judging by the pattern of atiku's online campaign, he probably hired 'Cambridge analytica' the same company Gej hired in 2015 and helped massively push that 'blood and baboon' quote and pictures everywhere on the internet to try and discredit Buhari all to no avail.

This guys are not cheap at all, I mean they easily will cost atiku tens of million of $$$ and while they are obviously good at what they do as they helped Donald trump and brexiteers win massively, their methods of alienate, sow discord, spread hate and consolidate certain voter base simply cannot win federal elections in Nigeria!

They failed with Jonathan and will drive atiku to failure as well if he doesn't do something soon and fast! I no even pity Atiku, everyone around him are super vultures but the money he has is mostly on the sweat and blood of Nigerians anyways.. So waste away! grin
I don't understand you, you need define yourself. Atiku don't to hire 'Cambridge analytica' to win Buhari. Buhari of 2015 and already discredited buhari of 2018 and beyond is not the same. Buhari is not capable. Any other person can win but not Buhari. My prefered candidate was Sule Lamido but he failed.

You are right that all other States needs to be linked but the busiest road in Nigeria and Africa is Lagos Ibadan according to report it accommodate 250000 vehicles on daily basis. Amongst these are the trailers and heavy container, if those is off the road at least a lot of pressure will be reduced on the road. And the rail will still be extended but you know our Naija na. Continuity is a sin. But for now its a welcome idea

Lovely, but what wud happen to thousands of dangote truck on the road. At this time when he is even planning to open a truck manufacturing plant in the country.

His trucks will now be inter-reginal e.g carrying his goods like flour from factory to the train station and this will reduce his transportation cost.Simple as ABC

Wow!
Very good development.
That is how it is done abroad.
God bless the Federal Government.

That's not how it's done abroad. People have the option of choosing between rail and road in shipping their items - they consider several factors like cost, proximity, convenience etc. The FG is considering outright ban on road transportation which will be inconvenient in many cases.

The traffic on that road is shared between vehicles moving to and fro Lagos/Ibadan and to and fro Lagos/Other states.

Infact the ratio of cars based on your figure between Lagos/Ibadan and Lagos/Otherstates is 15:85.

I myself move goods between Lagos and PH often. There was a night my truck stopped at Ibafo cause of some mech issues and i had to spend the night there.

Observing the amount of trucks that moved on the road at night was amazing.

Trucks account for most of the traffic at night while buses and cars account for the day.

I had detailed also why rail can't work in Nigeria:
- the dispatch operator doesn't want to work and wants to go to UK Canada usa so the train will be delayed or cancelled.
- the track maintenance staff are non chalet so grass grows on the tracks causing a derailment. S/he too wants to go UK us Canada Australia so doesn't care about the job.
- then the bribery: if u want it cargo to load first u pay more.
- and then tendency to make simple things complex.

Look at banks. none of the banks in nigeria have a proper recruitment system except first bank. Basic things aren't there.

Have u seen how ppl drive in Nigeria? It's not bad roads that cause accidents it's savage driving.

A ppl who refuse to take responsibility for national development but always blaming the presidency as if the presidency is the rough driver or the tour or the wicked man seeking bribe.

See some fools here typing from their papa's compound saying is good development, am sure most of u don't knw the thousands of truck that always ply that road every hours,Ameachi now expect my father with 8 trucks to sell it and start another business. It can and never work, thunder fire APC....

Wat will happen to dangote trucks that always go to Lagos to transport raw material from Apapa port to various states where is company is located ??Highest tax payers in the Land..

Wat will happen to NUPENG,fuel tankers which happens to be the most effective union in Nigeria, u expect those tankers owner to be selling cloths....

It will just never work, as far as Lagos and Ogun is concern and exist within Nigeria, nothing can stop movement of trucks, fashola did it Nd doesn't work for one week....Just one week strike from NUPENG (tankers owner) will lead to scarcity of petrol across the nation Nd will reset dea brain. ....

Compulsory use of the railways for transporting cargo may sound good, but how practical would the implementation be?

Has the federal government assessed the volume of cargo that is transported along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway each day and night, and whether the railways can handle such volume daily unfailingly?

If use of the railways is to be enforced, it should not be done immediately, but after at least two years from a public announcement, to enable businesses to adjust.

Alternative road routes should be created, because trucks would still be needed one way or another.
