A friend text me this, and I think sharing it here on Nairaland will be good, as it will be exposed to wider opinions, idea, advise and perspective.

Experienced elders in the house, please give an advice on this issue.

In his words "
Computer science has been a course I've been so passionate and engulfed with, I don't think I could ever do anything aside of computer related career.

I've been applying to different universities and computer science as a course of aspiration for the past three years, I've never scored below 200 in my utme exams and my O level result is too neat with no deficiency, the first two universities I applied never gave me admission even though I think Nigeria's academic atmosphere is having a high degree of intense decadence ranging from poor academic practical equipment with outdated curriculum. I've seen people with lower cut off Marks being admitted, I know it's almost 65% connection this days unlike the 70s, 80s, 90s, its no longer on merit all the time.

I've started coding at the age of sixteen, I can write codes proficiently in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, php and mysql, java, little of C++ and little of Python. No one thought me all this, i watch tutorials and practice my ass out! This is my career, and its my dream. I'll be glad even if I graduated with a computer science degree and still become unemployed, I will feel I've arrived and satisfied at the same time.

There is this joy derived in doing what you're passionate about.

I recently got admitted in on of the country's university, unfortunately, my course was changed from computer science to mathematics, not even computer science education or any other computer related course (Don't know if it can be reversed though). I feel I have to try or apply again, even if I bag bachelors degree in computer science at the age of 30, I'm still fine with that provided my dreams comes true.

I've vowed never to give up on my dreams, I'm not under any societal pressure nor family pressure, my parents are very understandable set of people, they support me.

The world is an IT driven world, computer experts or people with IT knowledge are in huge demand everyday. This also elevated my quest for and passion for computer.

We are all responsible for the decision we take in life, I don't want to regret later in life, I will not be influenced by Any one to Change my dream, this is what I want and ever wanted and will always want. I also want to have a certified IT certificate after my degree so as to boost my chances in the labour market.

Now here comes the question.

Should I forget about computer science degree and go for a certified IT course in any of the IT training school in the country or still pursue admission and later get a certified IT course after my degree? Or just have the degree? Cuz I know that computer science is not all about having the degree, it also about building yourself and self development. I know that there are graduated of computer science that can't even write code.

Please I'm confused in this stage of my life, advice me on what to do.
I don't want to regret or take a wrong decision that I'll later say " Had I know "

Help a brother, and God bless you as you respond.

NO NIGERIAN UNIVERSITY WILL EVER GIVE YOU TRUE COMPUTER SCIENCE KNOWLEDGE THAT IS APPLICABLE IN THIS CENTURY

So it is a blessing in disguise. HE SHOULD GO AND DO ABOUT 6 CERTIFICATIONS in the area of ICT that he is fit for, and IF HE IS DILIGENT, HE WILL BECOME VERY LUCRATIVE IN IT.

University is simply APC and POLYTECHNICS are like PDP.

God is trying to tell him that there is NOTHING FOR HIM IN UNIVERSITY with regards to computer science UNLESS HE HAS MONEY TO AFFORD A PRIVATE UNIVERSITY then he is safe.

He should NEVER have written jamb.... CERTIFICATE is NOT SABIFICATE.... people will only pay the person who has SABIFICATE.

Re: Please Help A Brother In Career Dilemma! by greatnaija01: 11:13am On Dec 07, 2018

studying computer related courses is a big waste of time in Nigerian universities.

Damn! it's so frustrating and annoying because you are only taught theories theories and theories with little or no practical.

i feel your pain . let me tell you a little story.

before admission i choose mechatronics because of my passion for robot embedded system . bt i was i given physics .

i wasn't happy bt i continue along the line i began exploring tech. not minding the course given to me. i started learning to code and do some stuff my self. not saying because i was give physics i should not be serious. moral there is (i didn't let something that wasn't my choice defeat my passion).
so i develop interest in physics as well and love it.

the issue of i can code , i can do these does not should not stop u from doing the math course given to u.

i can vouche computer science in uni is rubbish
without a cs degree u can work as a programmer(let it sound in yur ear)

me myself , i self learn programing.
i can code in php, python, java and also i am a data scientist
i do must web ,AI,android
and i have 2 years working experiences.
i google udaity android certificate ,and am currently pursuing Microsoft data science cert etc
and am in school.
now am doing my internship in a data company

so don't let the rubbish of i was given math which is not my choice , i knw some guy in cs that can't code shingba even am doing some of them project.
so go on with it
