I don't know why children look the most like their fathers when the man walks out of their lives. An evolutionary explanation must exist.
If the man is there his look is a little diluted, ready to manifest itself in them during the later years of life. However if he disappears the look befalls them immediately.

I believe this one 'stole' the man's sperm with the belief he'll one day tire of his already established family and settle with her. Old spinsters have a lot of time to think and desperation is an ally.
