The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has staged a walkout from the meeting with a federal government delegation.

The government delegation was led by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige.

The university lecturers embarked on an indefinite strike on November 4, demanding improved funding of universities and implementation of previous agreements with the government.

The National President of ASUU, Biodun Ogunyemi, led the union’s delegation to Monday’s meeting.

The ASUU delegation arrived at the ministry at exactly 5:00 p.m. but no member of the federal government delegation was around as at this time.

The government delegation led by the Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige, arrived at exactly 6:00 p.m.

The minister of education, Adamu Adamu, was absent at the time the meeting started.

Before the walkout and at the start of the meeting, Mr Ngige told the lecturers that he hopes a consensus on most of the issues is reached at the end of the meeting.

He assured the union that attention will be paid to three critical demands, which are salary shortfall, university revitalisation and earned allowances of lecturers.

These guys are fronting for private universities owners.
Indirect marketing agents.

There is nothing the government will do to appease them.
If you like meet all their demands now and surpass them, they will go on strike because of the harmattan and the hazy dust.

The report said SSANU accused the federal government of not obeying the judgment of National Industrial Court, Abuja, which ruled that the teachers in university staff schools who were sacked by government should be reinstated.

Me: FG pls should obey court judgement of December 5th, 2015 and reinstate the staff schools teachers it unlawfully layed off. This affected teachers are breadwinners of families and relatives

This issue has been resolved and FG has issued circular to that effect. However, some Universities have difficulty implementing the circular because of earlier actions they took.

Typical example is what happened in my institution. They absorbed the teachers into various departments of the University and recruited new set of teachers for the staff school.

Now, FG will not recognize the newly recruited teachers because they were not there when the legal action was instituted. And there is no need for reinstating the former teachers because they are already in the employment of the University.

If actually this your assertion its true there wouldn't be this
series of protest/strike action over this matter since December 2015 court verdict.
Because this staff schools issue also part of current ASUU demands.
The last time, Labour minister spoke about during ASSU negotiations, he said, FG is aware of the existing court verdict to that effect. That FG will do something about the it.
Moreover, the verdict of the court states that since the FG is the proprietor of the staff schools, the FG must also take the full responsibility of the personnel/infrastructural cost of the staff schools like every other public schools.

The implications of the judgement is that whether new teachers were been recruited into some staff schools, FG
as the proprietor of the schools must full responsibility of the schools funding(including salaries of even the new teachers)

The explanation I gave above is the same explanation given to us by a member of ASUU negotiation team and an immediate past executive member of the union.

It was given as 'clarification' when someone raised the issue of staff school during one of our congresses.

Thanks for the insightful information.
The what's the way forward for those staff schools teachers not Absorbed by their institutions.

What's the position of Industrial court verdict that States that FG should be responsible for the full funding of the staff schools since same FG is the proprietor of the staff schools.
What's implications of implementing above court verdict as regard to the new recruited teachers and those not absorbed.
Am one of those affected that's why am concerned about this matter.

Pls kindly respond.

More importantly, would have like to have your contact number so that I can also keep in touch with u on this matter
