ASUU Strike: Lecturers Speak On Being Distracted By 2019 Election by 5Ebiscoo: 10:02pm On Jan 03, 2019
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Thursday, declared that it would not be distracted by the 2019 elections in its struggle to revitalise public universities.

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) Prof. Yakub Mahmood, had said that the planned ASUU strike might affect the 2019 general election.

The Chairman of ASUU, University of Ibadan (UI), Dr Deji Omole, spoke on Thursday in an interview with newsmen in Ibadan.

Omole said that the union was ready to pursue the strike to a logical conclusion irrespective of whether there would be election or not.

He added that INEC could recruit ad-hoc staff from eligible Nigerians “who are in their millions’.’

“We are not part of INEC, therefore, INEC can look elsewhere for ad-hoc staff to conduct the election.

“What Nigerians are only interested in is credible election and not participation of lecturers.

“Even when we were not on strike, not all our members are interested in participating in the elections, because it is a voluntary thing.

“Whoever that feels like participating in the elections can go ahead to participate.

“If you check in the letter addressed to individuals that have participated in the election in the past, the letter is addressed to individuals and not to ASUU,” UI ASUU Chairman said.

He said that the demand of the union that the MoU of 2017 be implemented was sacrosanct. Omole said that once the union saw the commitment of government, the leadership would bring it back to them at chapters, where it would be taken to their congresses and redirect to national for necessary action.

The UI ASUU chairman urged Nigerians to continue to put pressure on government to do the needful by investing more in funding education. He said that private education was not an alternative to public schools and called on all Nigerians to support the strike to salvage the university system in Nigeria.

We continue to blame the university system for churning out half bake graduates but we're not ready to do anything in order to revive it. What you give in is what you get in System theory.

ASUU leadership are definitely partisan. Any effort to undermine our electoral process is unacceptable.

It should also be stated, what ASUU is demanding is an unfulfilled commitment of the PDP. As it stands now, the Buhari's administration has made concessions on their demands. It is unfair for ASUU to go into negotiations stiff necked and refuse to find a common grounds.

Students are suffering and now ASUU is holding our Democracy hostage.

I am not holding brief for the wasteful Nigerian government but the reality is that university education is expensive and depending on government meagre subvention is not realistic. Somebody must pay for it.

The best approach is for appropriate school fee to be charged.

Why would Covenant university not top rating when they spend hundreds of millions annually to subscribe to international review agencies. How many of our public schools can boast of tenth of that amount on such.

Our public universities attract the best brains as lecturers and students with massive facilities left unmaintained. Yet they cannot compete because of pausity of fund.

Show me the best universities in the world and I will show you the most expensive universities (Harvard, Cambridge, Oxford, Yale, Pricinton, Stanford, MIT, Colombia, Calinstitute, etc)

ASUU, students (NANS) and government with other stakeholders should brainstorm on how our universities can be self sufficient financially that will restore lost glory and carter for the interest of indigent but qualified students.

They are not part of INEC so why are they being roped into the issue? See low key blackmail and guiltripping. They want to find a way to blame ASUU for the anything that goes wrong.

Mr ASUU Chairman, don't let them deceive you please, if they want credible ad-hoc staff from our educational system then they should do the needful. We say no to irregularities in our educational sector. The struggle continues...

You guys can not just see truth and say it. Always partisan, blaming PDP up and down.

The agreement ASUU is fighting for was made in 2017. Check well.

How is the strike undermining electoral process abi they are looking for excuses as usual.

You people should leave ASUU out abi ASUU is PDP again?
