@pepe1 really appreciate your suggestion. Did you start learning from scratch at the institute and how many months have you spent?

Bonjour a tous.

I am very sorry not to have been available here as expected of the OP, it's been a crazy period for me. I also lost my devices recently.

I'd want to thank everyone that has contributed in one way or the other to the success and continuity of this thread. Y'all are awesome and I pray our efforts shall be crowned with success. I also want to use this opportunity to congratulate njbybrthnly on his/her recently received ITA. I am sure I'm not the only one motivated by his/her dedication and resilience. Sorry I have not been available on Whatsapp for our French chit-chats, I presently do not have a phone. My congratulations also go to every other person that has written the TEF exam. Regardless of the outcome, I admire your courage and ambitiousness.

Just an update from me, I have seen both my TEF and IELTS results. While my TEF isn't the best result ever, I am glad my IELTS is sufficient to make it up. I got C1, C1, B2, B1 in TEF and L8, R8, S8, W7 in IELTS. By God's grace, I will be creating my profile next month once I'm done with WES.

Courage a tous !

Thanks alot for the info! Your determination is enviable. I am motivated!

How long did it take you to get ready for the exam? How did you go about the speaking aspect?

Will intensive 3 months self study be enough to get some points from TEF?

I have registered with Frenchpod101dotcom

I used resources tailored to self study.

I started with Michel Thomas from Foundation to the Vocabulary course and then I moved to "Assimil New French with Ease" and then I religiously used a site called Frenchpod101dotcom.

CONGRATULATIONS etrange!!! Wow...see result! I'm really happy for you on both counts. I hope your ECA gets delivered quickly so you can dive into the pool asap.

P.S. please when you're not so busy could you post about your experience and tips to pass the test? Many thanks.

sorry about your "phonelessness"

I started preparing for the TEF some time in September. Roughly a month...but just to put some context, I must add that I was rather more confident with other areas except speaking(I have taken the DELF B2 before).

For my speaking prep: I got familiar with the test types. I realised that for the first section, I'd basically have to phone someone to get more information on something. So I learned all of the standard phone scenarios e.g. stating reason for calling...paraphrasing existing information, checking if you heard correctly by paraphrasing what the interviewer said, using "can you tell me more about xyz..." are there extra charges not included in the ad.? Etc...this is really easy to hack.

For the convincing part, I imagined the scenarios in English and identified the "Frenchiest" way to express them...
So I had a handful of phrases for EVERY possible counter argument. Examples "What do you mean you're not interested?" That's a fair point but have you thought about this xyz benefit? "I really don't think that's a problem especially since...", "this is a great way to impress xyz..."(I remeber using this specifically to convince my interviewer that he should consider electric cars because his crush was a fan of the environment), etc...the list is endless but it really helps to have these at the back of your hand to fill in the awkward gaps when the interviewer is becoming a pain...find the French equivalent and memorize them basically...

An intensive 3 months (with the right amount of effort) can help with Speaking, Writing...I say this because it's easy to learn the standard writing required to get a high B2 in TEF. (I got a low B2 with relatively less prep than I should have) Speaking might be tricky because you need to improve your listening to hear what the examiner is saying...nonetheless that's a possible 6 points.

As for listening and reading, you may need longer to acquire the vocabulary and speed required to get points based on the TEF scoring charts.

I must encourage you that it is actually within reach and you should go for it, if anything, for when you eventually get to Canada....@njbybrthnly is a prime example of what is achievable when you put good effort in French.

Thanks Lot!

I will give it my best shot. Will try and get a private tutor. Going to a school may slow down my pace.

Thank you.

Salut et tous. I am extremely happy to come across this thread, and now am making it my new year resolution to intensively study french for the whole of 2019 via self study, interacting with some french speakers i know and listening to french radio and tv stations so that in early 2020 by the grace of God, i will take the TEF exam head on. Thank god i already have some foundational french since.

C'est une idée très excellente, tu peut commencer par cherchant sur Google, journal en français facile. Tu peut essayer à lire mais écouter toujour à l'émission.

J'ai espéré que ma petite parole vous aides.

From my little understanding and without using google translate, you first said its a very excellent idea. You could start by google searches, french journals/papers, i dont know about the other sentences but toujour means everyday right? And your last sentence? Anyway have i tried in translating your french writing? Btw merci boucoup

Probably the veterans on this group can help those who would like to learn the language through group study, it's just a thought in my head.

Great idea.

But seriously, I think this is a community need. If there are enough hands to comfortably take on the duty of helping others, it will no longer be considered a huge task and a lot of willing individuals will benefit from it.

One thing I have noticed so far is this; learning a language is one thing and retaining that knowledge is a whole different story. So this might be a win-win for the 'veterans' that might be willing to help out and those that want to learn.

You're right...I for one would be willing to help but I wouldn't know where (or even how) to start. First off, I'm not very confident of my French outside the scope of the exam. Again, I also feel many of us are still learning French from scratch, to get a general understanding of the language, hence, don't yet know the specific areas to focus more attention on.

I agree though that the task of passing this exam is not as daunting as it appears so I'm game if you are as you senior me for this French waka

this is a very great idea and I understand where you're coming from with your explanations. However, you would be amazed at your competence with the language once you begin to tutor; speaking to those that have written the exams that is (everyone of your results have been amazing). Your wealth of knowledge will go a long way in pushing us the newbies past the awkward beginning.

For instance, I have all of the resources shared on this platform but have been struggling to study on my own not knowing where to start or pattern to follow. I have more than enough time on my hands right now and would appreciate a guide on attaining a solid A1 before mid January assuming it's possible (before I dash AF all my money).

Quick question pls, reading through your post about your Tef journey, did you have prior knowledge of french before your 6 months prep?
Re: All TEF Candidates For Canada Immigration, Let's Meet Here! by njbybrthnly: 11:21am On Dec 20, 2018
Bhussola:
Quick question pls, reading through your post about your Tef journey, did you have prior knowledge of french before your 6 months prep?

I had secondary school French prior to the 6 months prep. For your prep, I suggest you start with building your vocabulary and working on grammar, while listening to French audio at the same time (I think the listening part is the most important). It's very possible to develop a solid A1 within your timeline...you only need to put in a lot of work.

Let me also add this: don't be afraid of reading in French, I've found that a few people I've chatted with get discouraged when they study books written solely in french. To overcome this, all you need is a French dictionary (paper or online) - I prefer paper dictionaries (not pocket dictionaries o - they are too limited)and the online Collins dictionary because they give other possible translations of a word or phrase with examples. Google translate is ok but it gets unreliable when you want to translate longer phrases - I will only recommend it to more advanced learners who can identify the incorrect translations.

Hope this helps. Feel free to ask for more clarification if anything is still unclear.

For people with zero French (not that you did some in secondary school and have some residual knowledge o)....I would suggest you go to AF or get a tutor to begin with.

Once you have the basic foundation you can build on it with self study....otherwise you might not know where to start.

Just my view.
