When in Rome do like the Romans, but some people no go ever gree!!

Some will even say the "Roman culture" does not exist

From your posts, it is clear that you don't know much about Canada. Your knowledge about Canada is limited to what you have read.
So it is pointless discussing with you.

Hmmm......
Some culture just don't believe in equality, it's a cultural mindset and they carry this orientation wherever they go n seek to have it established...
Just look at the gang grooming culture ravaging uk cities that have significant British Pakistani population.....

As I have said earlier, you can't live in Canada with xenophobic mentality. There will be consequences.
The Ontario ( for Ontario)or Canadian Human rights are very effective in tackling issues dealing with discrimination and racism.

Individuals will always believe what they want to believe but xenophobic mentality will never prevail in Canada.

A Question for you big boss:

You suggest that when in Rome, Nigerians have to do like the Romans.
And when the Romans come to Nigeria, do they do things like Nigerians or they still act as in Rome?

Hi All,

It is quite alright to share our understanding about:
a. Canadian laws
b. mainstream Canadian culture and values

This is information that will help immigrants to navigate their new home.

A discussion about personal values will however always disintegrate into an argument and that is unhelpful as you can't impose or dictate your values on someone else over the barrel of an argument. Certainly not when arguing with faceless interlocutors on an anonymous social media thread.

This caused us to derail the thread during the discussion about marriage in Canada and we are doing the same in this argument about sexual orientation in Canada.

I think by now we all have an understanding of what to expect in Canada. Let's kill the argument please.

I apologise if my earlier post came off as alarmed because that was not my intention.Shelter plans have been kiboshed.I was only considering the shelter because my efforts have not paid off yet and I am doing a shortlanding and was hoping to get my family settled as quickly as possible. I felt being in a shelter in the city will make able to move out more and get the kids in school and I was to see how it was before deciding. Someone said it was accepting defeat and that does not come into play in this scenario.Besides, not everyone in a shelter has accepted defeat lol but no more shelter anyways and thanks for your advise. I will take a chill pill and intensify my efforts. I am not despaired nahh... very far from it. I have equally searched for apartments outside Canada with a no of rejections as well but you could apply concurrently in as many places as possible and you don't have to make a deposit you lose risking if more than a place is approved and you have to choose.
I didn't intend to discourage others.Very far from it. I understand starting a new life with a family takes a lot and I was prepared just that it is not working according to my set timeline and I want my kids to begin school on Jan 7. Thank you very much for the wonderful contributions and this place is like a family to me where I come to learn from others and share the bit I can.
For the tips also coming from a good place I believe advising me to take a backseat and let hubby do the heavylifting, it doesn't matter who does smiley. We have been going together as a team as well.We all have different personalities and some women are not built to wait for prince charming to take them to eldorado. They are capable and can do what they can without being micromanaged by their husbands. Some men are also very happy to bring home the bacon, take a backseat and let their partners take full rein. Some women also have a good track record of achieving things and management as well as leadership and there should be no tussle in relationships as to who does what.
Thanks again everyone and for reaching out.

As the new year approaches, people in the GTA can you suggest fun things to do or places to visit for the countdown/New Years day? My friends are saying it might not be safe to be downtown specifically at Nathan phillips square for the countdown (but I kinda don’t believe that). Anywhere else one can visit for fun?

I really wish you’d just create a new post rather than update a post I’ve already responded to with new additions.

Our so called “African heritage” endorsed the killing of twins, human sacrifices, female circumcision and an oppressive patriarchal system that subdued (and still does) women.

Most of these stone age practices have been done away with and rightly so.

That is unfortunate if you are limiting the African heritage to the bolded.
You seem to ignore much about Africa. 700 years ago, some of the biggest libraries in the world were in countries like Mali (library of Timbuktu ).

Anyway, there are rubbish in every culture. We are doing away with rubbish of the African culture only to embrace the rubbish of westerners.

How rude.

No one is asking you to embrace the rubbish of westerners.

What you’re being asked to do is respect people’s choices. Just because you don’t agree with a person’s choice doesn’t make that choice rubbish.

Live and let live.

You Certainly cannot sponsor anybody to come into Canada cos you are not obeying the rule of your PNP nomination, and you are at risk also of losing your PR status(to the best of my knowledge),except you can prove to the appropriate authority that you could not obtain the desired job in all of Manitoba and had no choice but to move to another province and that might be semi impossible to do.

I would advice you go back to Manitoba ,get ur citizenship ,sponsor who you want and move wherever you want.
Elders in the house, put mouth abeg,I spoke to the best of my knowledge

The lawlessness and stupidity of money hungary Nigerians is unreal. This person is ready to risk his PR status, the eligibility of his family coming to Canada, his sister's ability to sponsor more family members, etc just to make a few extra dollars per hour in another province. He's too foolish and selfish to realize him and his family benefits greatly in the long here if they're all in Canada. But like most Nigerians, he'd sell his soul and family out for a few dollars.

Then he comes here with this nonsense sympathy story to ease his guilty conscience asking what to do. As if he hasn't already made up his mind. Why can't Nigerians follow the laws, especially when abroad ? Why ?? He'll soon find out this is not a banana republic or naija where you can manipulate the system without getting caught. When his fraud is caught and PR is revoked, and he goes back to waking up beside chickens running around, he'll now think I'm in this position because of greed.

So rubbishing a person’s choice is showing mutual respect?

Eating dog or cat is disgusting for some people but acceptable to others.
The person who doesn't eat dog can't harrass those who do eat dogs. He should respect their choice. This is what I call mutual respect.
However, this doesn't exclude the fact that eating dog is foolishness or rubbish to the person who doesn't eat dog.

Well then, as long as you keep your concept of foolîshness to yourself in your home, that’s fine.

Just don’t go around preaching and inciting hatred in a country that upholds freedom of choice and equal opportunities.

While you try to be west than the Westerners, you are beginning to sound ridiculous. Didn't the Europeans in the past burn witches at the stake, didn't they kill people that tried to disprove of some of their religious beliefs. Why are you trying to sound condescending to certain mistakes we made in the past? If Oyibo decides to get married to his dog, he or she can go ahead with that. We can tolerate and respect their choices but we can't accept that to be our norm. The Asians, Arabs etc don't give a shit about the abnormal things the Westerners do but don't the Westerners still respect them and place them over you? When you try to reason, think or act like someone, the best you can only be is a counterfeit.

brother , I am not "understanding" what you are saying

Are you saying that one should pretend to be like them?... "But you already know where you are coming from"?

Would they do the same if they were on your own turf?
How are you sure their ways are the right ways ?or it doesn't matter?

Being tolerant of other people's culture does not equal imbibing/adopting it.

I perfectly understand what @TheCongo2 is trying to say. Why is the onion always on maybe the Black or Asian man to conform but the Whiteman can always go ahead and chart his own course. We consciously or unconsciously reinforce this 'supposed' superiority. I believe it will be seen as a barbaric act for me as an African man to slaughter an animal as part of my religious worship but it wouldn't be if tomorrow Oyibo decides to incorporate such into his mode of worship.
