Your question is quite interesting for the newbies...I was born and bred in Lagos...Presently, I have been residing in Abuja since 2012...Let compare and contrast both cities for more illumination.


1. Transportation
Lagos transportation system is quite hectic...You need to be strong to board a commercial vehicle in Lagos...There's a lot of pushing, shoving and insults...On several occasions, phones and bags are stolen...Lagos traffic is like another issue entirely...You can be in a traffic for like 2hours without any of the vehicles moving...I mean every vehicles will be in a gridlock...For someone getting to his/her destinations takes a lot of hours coupled with the stress of sitting uncomfortably in one position...Getting home, one is tired and worn out...Eventually, the lifespan of a Lagosian is usually divided by a quarter.
Abuja is not like that...The traffic is very smooth and you will get to your office within 45minutes long...In the case, there's traffic, the vehicles usually move and clears up within few minutes compared to Lagos...Lastly on this, Abuja roads are way sleeky and motorable, even during rainy season.

2. Accommodation
Lagos accommodation is nothing to write home about, as majority of the houses are in a state of moribund and dilapidation...The rent paid in Lagos is up the mountains for the high brow areas in Lagos, unless one want to go to a slum area to rent an eyesore of a structure deprived of the needed facilities...In Abuja here, you will see affordable houses like one-bedroom flat with facilities of N150,000 but not exceeding N250,000 in good areas...A nice one-bedroom of this standard in Lagos goes for more than N400,000...You can agree with me here that Abuja homes are very affordable.


3. Electricity
In Abuja, the area I stay always have constant, I mean constant (20-24hours of light)...You can't compare that with Lagos...When I was in Lagos, the electricity supply is way below expectations...The mosquitoes always had field days with us then because of no light for fans to blow them off.


4. Air
As a result of the constant supply of light in Abuja and its environs, there are fewer generators that would have been polluting the air with the dangerous carbon monoxide which would have impaired the health of the inhabitants and animals here...That's why people here always have higher lifespans, as they enjoy the undiluted air, free from nature...Less people go to the hospitals here.
You can hardly find people with asthma and other lung diseases...Lagos is so choked up that breathing is quite a laborious activity...Did I forget to tell you folks that, the waste management system here works 100%...You hardly find dumpsites and garbage piled up here...Lagos is an eyesore filled with dumpsites and littered with wastes everywhere.


5. Business
I must confess that Lagos is way up the league in this area, as there are many opportunities abounding in Lagos...What's the essence of business?Is it not to make money, send your children to school, pay bills, buy a car and build a house?Sure, you can make money anywhere if you have the right information and materials at your disposal...Some people are making millions of naira at the comfort of their homes without the 9-5pm type of jobs...Thousands of people are making it more than those in Lagos...Business in Lagos is over hyped...You can virtually make your money anywhere.


6. Crime Rate
The crime rate in Lagos is growing at a geometric progression because of the population over there...In Lagos, the rate of cultism, kidnapping, suicide, prostitution, armed robbery, burgling, pick pocketing, yahoo, yahoo plus and ritualism has skyrocketed...Lives are not really safe in Lagos...You can't walk easy on the roads because you might be attacked by all these area boys (alayes) and the rest...This is not so in Abuja...Here, we sleep with our two eyes closed...You can carry your costly phones and laptops on the streets without any form of molestation...Nobody is ready to snatch your IPhone from you because everybody is a big boy here...You can stay outside and come back late without any harassment...Life is really great here in Abuja.

Abuja is the small London of Nigeria.

Tho the question wasn't directed at me but I also came to Abuja as a youth corper 2 years back and I can say God has been faithful.. .to ur 1st question, U can get a GOOD self contain For 250k - 500k depending on the location...(250k-300k for kubwa, Dawaki, dutse, Luge, life camp, Jahi and some part of gwarinpa while areas like Wuse, wuye, Jabi, utako is 300k and above depending on the quality of the house)
And to ur 2nd question, YES the business is profitable so long as u have "packaging"...Abuja is all about packaging

Let me come in here...

What he said is true but you can still get self con for 150k in some places even in some of the areas he mentioned.
There are other cheap areas like Kubwa Byazin-across, Kabusa (close to Area 1), Nyanya, gwagwalada (these two are outskirts but cheap transport to the main town like N300-500 depending on where you are going). Even in Bwari, Dutse, mpape and dawaki, you can find house of that price but keep extra 20k incase you don't get one for exactly 150k. Forget staying in Gwarimpa, it's mostly hyped but there are very rich and influencial people there though like Charly boy and some politicians.

Just find a good cheap place to lay your head then take your business to the big guys in their 'mansions'.

Hmm...I don't know much about your line of work but I know that Abuja has a lot of estates and more are built/developed every year or so.

I often see adverts like 'own a home in so and so estate starting from so and so amount'. I don't really know the details but I guess it means that a new estate is selling homes to anyone who wishes to buy.

Also in the suburbs, there is often construction of 'ultra modern' markets and that means building of shopping spaces because I see adverts like 'Get a shop in so and so market at so and so amount''

Drawing from these, I think there is a lot of construction opportunity in Abj.
But...I don't know how easy it is to get contracts...bear in mind that Abj is Nigeria's political capital so heavy politics will be involved.

sorry for the late response I am just seeing this now...well, I am a civil engineer too and I am presently working wit a construction company here in Abuja...There are opportunities for civil engineers here in Abuja cus the city is still developing hence lots of construction going on (especially building structures)...Also, construction companies that carry out projects in Northern part of the country (highway projects and the likes) have their head offices here in Abuja so it is somehow easy to join these companies here if u know ur onions...
But if ur plan is to go into private practice, then u have to come here first and spend some time to understand the terrain cus getting contracts here boils down to connect...

Well, I believe the sky is big enough for everyone...If u package urself well, I believe u can...and with regards to the part of Abuja that is best for an Artisan, anywhere is okay so long as it is not above ur budget, it is easy to move around town cus the city is well planned and there is a good road network...
Mind U, I would suggest u wait till after the elections before u relocate cus nothing is really happening in Abuja right now (i.e no contracts)...everyone is just waiting for the outcome of the elections before they start making moves..

well, it depends, I live in Karu site (just before Nyanyan) and there are alot of agents around here with houses that are readily available but mind u, u wont be able to get a self con for 100K in Karu, so u should be looking at 150k-300k depending on the standard of the house.
As for Nyanyan and Mararaba, u should be able to get that of 100K but it might be below standard so I would suggest u put ur mind on 150k.

Abuja is obviously the best place to live as there's so much quiet and serenity. Am currently in abuja but am leaving 4 lagos soon because there are numerous job opportunities compared to the selected few in abj. To get a good job in abj you gotta highly connected since menial or regular job won't do sh!t. largely it depends on a person's choice and the need to stick to the choice because both places are particularly tempting

A perfect business package for the Abuja clientele. To succeed in this business model, you should do a strategic marketing campaign. Most residents of Abuja love classy stuff and want to stand out of the crowd.

Are the design of the doors unique from what is obtainable from here locally? Are they durable and will they last? If the answer to the above questions is "YES", then you have a pack of potential clients ready to do business with you.

As for location, the city centre to be candid is very expensive as per rent. A 24x24 space in most plazas go for as high as N3m per annum. If you rent upstairs, you may have to cough out about N1m to N1.5. Most business persons prefer renting downstairs which is costlier because many big men/women no dey like to climb step.

So what should be done about this huge rent? Get a space in the suburbs of Abuja like Apo, Gudu, Lugbe, Kubwa etc. These places and similar areas will cost you about N250k-N300k max for rented space.

Now what happens after you rent your space? Don't just sit and wait for the big boys to drive their toys to your shop. You need to take your market to them! How?

Print handbills and fliers about the product and distribute them across so it can reach them. You can go to private schools and churches to drop some of these handbills. You can also print posters and paste them in strategic points in the metropolis. You can also make use of Graffiti (using spray paint) to advertise...something like "Foreign Doors for Sale...Call 0**********" in places like flyovers and pedestrian bridges.

Another thing is to liaise with property and estate managers. They are the ones who will give you almost 90% patronage. All these Military top guns and politicians wey dey launder money for Abuja usually throw them into long term investments of property (Estate)...if you know, you know. Take a catalogue of what you can offer to their table and give them great offers. If you are talking to a representative of the owners of the estate, let them know that they can get "kickbacks"...it is a very important marketing strategy which has always worked for me

You can also meet Hotel owners too as they will be also interested in your product.

You should also take advantage of radio ads. Go to Wazobia FM and Human Rights Radio (Hembelembe) and get time slots. These are the major 2 radio stations Abuja residents tune to daily both Rich and Poor. Every other radio station na wash! Trust me...even Buhari himself listens to Hembelembe

The last but not the least...MAKE SURE YOU HAVE AN ONLINE PRESENCE! Get an eye-popping website!! Abuja top dogs love packaging and they can ask you for your website so they can see what you have to offer especially those foreigners. As long as you are not doing a 9-5 job I strongly advice you to sit your ass down in Lagos. You are not going to end up with just foreign doors business because Lagos would open your eyes.

Plan your trips and drive time in Lagos and you are fine, also remember Lagos has little or no traffic on the weekends especially on the Island.

With the massive sea port in Lagos, you walk into Apapa port and you are out straight to the waiting market. You are eliminating the dangers of theft and accident moving all your goods from Lagos port to Abuja.

If you are returning back to Nigeria with enough capital then Lagos is your number 1 stop destination considering your username as a single dad coming for business. Your business needs to thrive for you to enjoy a good standard of living, so living in Kubwa with not much business going on is a very wrong economical move. You can live/run your business in Lagos and build your clientele in Abuja and then consider moving to Abuja once you hold your ground. Be futuristic my friend, think of business diversification.

There are cool places to live in Lagos like Surulere, Ikeja, Maryland, private estates in Gbagada. Also I bet you don’t want to miss out on all the owambe party invitations as a young CEO.

The air in Lagos is bad for those who need to jump on an okada from Ipaja to Meiran or from Oshodi to Isolo, not for a CEO like you cruising in your AC locked up car. The traffic in Lagos is terrible between 5am- 8am, 4:30pm-9pm considering we don’t have enough intra-city buses, city center congestion charges for cars and poor road infrastructure. With the Lagos project on revamping transportation and the rolling out of enough buses, I see the Lagos state government introducing congestion charges in some key areas, drop your cars and use the city buses or be ready to pay congestion charges and high parking fee to drive to office on the Island.

85% of road users office workers are already in their offices by 8am, so you can stroll to your office like a boss by 9am and get out by 4pm, if you know you know and by 8pm all the joints are beckoning at you at every corner bursting your brain with legbegbe crooner.

Lagos is life of the party, Abuja is a solitary confinement, only you can decide how you want to enjoy your 30’s and 40’s.
