I think some of us need to start telling ourselves the truth. While I agree that the US appears to be reducing child tourism, this discount issue is a VERY valid matter.

I contacted a hospital in the US and they sent me a self pay bill of about 5k. When I called to get confirmation that it was not discounted, the staff I spoke with at the billing department, confessed that the actual hospital bill is 21k but they make the 5k offer available for self pay patients. She also opened up to say the hospital does have a way of getting the discounted bit back from the government.

Granted, it isn't the fault of those who were ignorant of this but the US embassy is well within their rights to clamp down on this. Imagine how much taxpayers are paying yearly for self pay Obgyn patients like us. E reach to vex

Not everything is a baseless vendetta.

Meanwhile I am guessing some of us here don't realize how difficult it is for foreigners to obtain Nigerian visa or citizenship.

Boston is not cheap o..had my 2 babies there. Their POE isn't friendly too...but you'll be fine if you go prepared. Don't know about JFK 'cause I've never used it.

Kesspru:
Hello everyone. I have been reading all the feedbacks and I have learnt a lot so far. Please does anyone have or know any cheap hospital in Boston as that is where I have family. And is it best to fly directly to Boston or go through New York JFK. Just trying to consider an easy POE. Though iv passed through JFK a couple of times heading to Boston. I'll be glad to receive a response.

I got my visa in July after being called for 221G. I posted my interview..My husband got his via Dropbox in Dec. It really all depends on the VO.

KingAL07:

Unfortunately, having a medical visa is no guarantee, speaking from personal experience. I applied for a medical visa, presented the package I was going to use for the child birth purpose, I was given the medical visa, proceeded to use it, had a total medical bill of over $10k, paid ALL my bills, crossed all my T's and dotted all my I's. Traveled twice after initial child birth on same medical visa. Fast forward to time of renewal, I was invited in for an interview and denied a visa, was not pregnant, just trying to renew for holiday and shopping purposes.
I am not trying to be a Debbie downer here, just felt I should put this out there, so people are more prepared for the outcome of their interview and if possible plan early for other countries that give similar opportunities like the US.
It is obvious there is a vendetta against Nigeria. I am yet to see someone who falls under the bucket of child birth who has successfully renewed their visa in the last 6months.
P.S: If you are applying for a medical visa, take a package that shows at least 15k as the total bill and be able to show you can pay it, still not a guarantee as these people are currently VEXING. All the best guys.
Re: Give Birth In USA: Cost And Procedures Part 6 by Ebony84: 1:00am On Jan 05, 2019
Just tell them you were not aware that was required. It's not stated anywhere on their website to do so.

Mandydaisy:
I think the best thing to do is not add passport number and use initials because at POE some people get asked if they notified the embassy so what then do you do?

I've heard lately of people who paid ALL their bills and were trying to renew for visit purpose but got denied. This new banning policy is a norm for VO's not because of low bills or refusal to pay bills.

Who said it’s a trick anyway? How can someone claim to pay $2500 as hospital fees as an international self pay patient and you as a VO who is American know that even people with insurance pay as much as that? I applaud people who go the extra length to find these discounts, but at the same time, some hospitals are just shady and pass the rest of the payment onto the government.

A visa is a privilege, not a right. They can decide what to do and what not to do with it. You’re not entitled to it. And in case you don’t know sef. American passport holders also find it difficult to get a Nigerian visa.
Sorry but the way I read the bolded is that the applicant colluded with the Hospital to defraud the US government.

What has the US govt done to those hospitals asides from punishing the Patients with refusals? Those hospitals offering these so called "suspicious" discounts are STILL IN BUSINESS!

If the US Government is finding it difficult to handle these hospitals then why should the Nigerian seemingly oblivious of their internal issues, be the one to bear the consequence?

Someone mentioned a blacklist. I don't know if a blacklist exists or not but of what use would it be if the applicants cannot see it? Only when the applicant is being refused that he/she finds out about a so called blacklisted hospital.

Even if the patient pays over $10,000 for hospital bills is there any guarantee that the hospital will still not try to defraud the government through medicaid?

From all I've read so far you can help yourself by doing the following:

1. Ensure you fill your Nigerian address for ALL documents not just Birth certificate please. Hospital records et all should have your Nigerian address. This may make it difficult for hospitals to apply for Medicaid on your behalf since it is obvious that you don't reside in America and cannot be entitled to Medicaid.

2. For now, you can go for a higher priced hospital because it seems to be what they are also considering to detect Medicaid fraud. I do not like this approach because I believe it is the government's responsibility to weed out Medicaid fraud and not yours, but it is what it is.

3. It is not a do or die affair. Trump has stated that he would try to stop birth tourism. Once that happens Nigerians will face another country even if the country na remote island in the middle of nowhere, Nigerians will reach there. We need to consider fixing this nation by fixing ourselves. We can't continue like this. Seriously.

I was talking to a financial officer recently about the discount issue offer to self pay patient

“Usa operate a zero tolerance policy on fraud so if the embassy or anybody fit the hospital discount offer to international patient is a fraud then the FBI would have been invloved with criminal investigation but it not the case here ..
The discount issue is just a quick way to refuse visa applicant Which cannot be appeal and limited foreign child birth in usa which is a baseless excuse to the hospital because self paying patient are more profitable to the hospital than the insurance company

Nobody can apply for Medicaid on anyone's behalf. You need to sign a consent form before Medicaid will be processed on anyone's behalf. I think the issue is most of this discounts are not suppose to be for international patients but those resident in America without insurance and who would be paying out of pocket. The hospitals knows this and look a way whether you are international patient or resident in the US. Now we all are going to pay for this howbeit innocently. I think the embassy is trying to discourage this hence the refusal with the discount excuse. If you eventually get your visa , you will be more careful with low price hospitals. There are a lot of hospitals in the US who do not have maternity packages. They only give you an estimate of whar your total bill will be like. The total bill comes after services has been rendered and they can give you a little discount like 2 or 3 percent discounts. So many hospitals like that in Maryland. Maybe going forward, those going for childbirth should start looking for hospitals like that

That's a Big Fat Lie!!

You still haven't given up on this your baseless argument.

No matter the amount of anger or frustration you spew out about the US visa process it is not going to change anything about them.

Your anger and frustration should be spewed out on the Nigerian government who has caused uncountless amout of Nigerians to seek desperately to make sure that they have their babies abroad mainly for US/Canada citizenship.

Anyways, you can continue with the nagging and fustration comments if it's the only thing that is going to keep you sane.

Birth tourism for nigerians has been on for over 30 years now. When UK was granting citizenship by birth base on jos soli a lot of our parents were going there' to give birth. They bombar3ded the place till UK had to stop it. After stopping it, nigerians will still travel to UK and take buses to Ireland to give birth became Ireland was also granting citizenship by birth. Till those ones stopped it. This thing has been on and will continue as long as Nigeria remains the way it is. Until there's no where else to go give birth again.

Yes! She’s right! Stop spewing lies. I work for a health insurance company and no, self paid patients are not better off for the hospitals. I’ve said it before, the delay in payment for hospitals when they see patients with insurance is because most of these hospitals do not submit claims on time. They usually just collate the claims for like a month or two and send it in bulk.

Where I work, most of these claims are not even touched by a claims examiner. It goes through an automated system and payout is almost instant. It’s the really complicated ones that get rejected by the auto system and has to be examined by a claims examiner.

Health Insurance Has Failed America, Self-Pay Patient Sites are the Answer

Self-pay patient sites take back billions from insurance company profits to provide better patient care

The cost of healthcare has risen so high that millions of insured people avoid the detection of a serious illness because they have no money to see a doctor. In fact, 44% Americans didn’t go see a physician last year when they were sick or injured according to a new West Health Institute/NORC at the University of Chicago national poll. Forty percent say they skipped a recommended medical test or treatment in the last 12 months due to cost.
Three quarters of Americans say that our country doesn’t get good value for what we spend on healthcare and the situation is becoming tragic.

The common belief is insurance is healthcare… It is not. In fact, it keeps millions of people from catching chronic life-threatening illnesses like cancer and diabetes early.

After paying most of their disposable income on health insurance, over half of Americans say they received a medical bill they thought was covered by insurance or where the amount they owed was higher than expected, and more than a quarter say they had a medical bill turned over to a collection agency in the past 12 months.

Fifty-three percent of respondents say they have had a least one of the following situations occur because of healthcare costs in the last year:

36 percent report depleting their savings
32 percent say they racked up credit card debt
30 percent believe they had to decide between paying medical bills and basic necessities
41 percent report they couldn’t save any money because of their spending on healthcare.

Dr. Pedram Hendizadeh, founder of UMA Health, said, “As a practicing doctor, I found many patients in my office were being hurt by insurance.” He continued, “Self-pay patient sites are the answer to a system where billions of dollars are diverted from healthcare to insurance company profits.”

I'm already having headache reading this back and forth arguments abeg.

Like someone rightly said, their country, their decision. Afterall, if Nigeria was so stable why go through the stress of leaving your family, your comfortable house to fly with big belle for almost 17hrs to 24hrs depending on the airline, only to go and be a squatter in your hosts house and be trying to be in your best behavior for 2months or more? America is not even like the uk where you can move easily without help from someone, this one you go out only when they go out to save uber cost.

So please those who are advising we look for more expensive hospitals, in this present economy? So I will see hospital package of 5k then I will open eye to go and pay 15k because I want to please the VO? For goodness sake did I commit a crime by signing a hospital agreement?

Even the 5k sef is not convenient but most of us do this for the future of our kids not because we have one tree growing dollars (I pray for that kind of anointing this 2019). Not the one your child will want to study overseas tomorrow then they'll keep denying him/her for NO strong reason. If I give birth in Nigeria, I'll have hot pepper soup with fresh fish, I'll have people waiting on me 24/7 but for abroad who send you? If my country was better will I have to stress myself?

It's just unfortunate that a lot of people are getting denied this period on bases of previous childbirth. I wish everyone who needs to apply now success. Abeg, if you know any cheap hospital (3k sef) holla at me grin By God's grace, before I'll need to renew, VO's temper go don cool down.

Sorry for the loong rant Abeg.

We prefer self-pay international patients than US patients with Medicaid. International patients pay out a little more since the patient is typically seen only at the end of the pregnancy, payment is paid upfront, and there is no Medicaid paperwork to be filled.

Okay, I guess this is easier said if the pregnancy and birth delivery has no complications.

But in the case the delivery takes a negative turn and or the baby ends up needing NICU care then you'll undertsnd that self-pay will not be able to handle all those accumulated medical charges.
