You speak English as lingua franca not as mother tongue. Thats the difference. Many tribes in the north speak hausa but they have their own mother tongue and so they are not hausa. But these people speak an igbo dialect as first language. Why didn't the numerous tribes in the north adopt hausa as first language. Why do they speak hausa but still have their original mother tongue?

There was nothing like igbo before colonization. Igbo is a collection of various dialects. Hausa was spoken by northern minorities before the coming of both fulani and Britain
