iammo:Point of note, PDP govt issued T-bills also even at a higher interest. This just tells you that APC govt is not people friendly by reducing the interest rate. I am a proudly ATIKULATED Nigerian. |

mistyebby: hysteriabox:*facepalm* Olodos all over. Just to state here that I'm not in anyway a fan of this govt, however. The fact that you *hope* FG pays back the TB shows you have ABSOLUTELY no idea what the process entails. Well, as I have let me indulge you illiterates this once: Taken from a TB thread: What are treasury bills: https://www.nairaland.com/878880/treasury-bills-nigeria NIGERIAN TREASURY BILLSIn simple language, TBs are nothing new and its a NORMAL way of FG raising funds on shortterm basis. Regarding the issue of "paying back", its virtually unheard of for FG to default, hence its usually called zero-risk. The only possibility is if (in the very unlikely event) all our oil dries up and Fg becomes totally broke. |

iammo:What the hell are you talking about Why bring in your inferiority feelings to white people hereBorrowing at 10% to pay salaries/pensions CANNOT be a good thing The other thing is that the government borrowing rate is the benchmark in the economy. No one can borrow cheaper and that is why bank interest rates are in excess of 20% Why would our banks bother lending to the real sector when all they need to do is buy Treasury bills They do not need to take risks or innovate . Just lend money to the government at crazy rates and you are good. How can we industrialize with 23% interest rates. How can we compete against foreigners who borrow dollars in their @ 4% countries and come here to manufacture As long as government is borrowing @ 10% our banks will never lend to real businesses at internationally competitive rates. This raises the question of sustainability of our banks Is the Treasury Bill thing just another gravy train scam? If government needs to borrow to pay workers then those workers are not productive and shuld be sacked Do the masterly white folk of America finance consumption at 24% percent interest rates? No interest rates have been ridiculously low for years . Why ? our leader park billions in THEIR banks at near 0% interest while we borrow @ 24% back home |

Makawhizzy:Do you forget that those remittances you are talking about, are shared by the three tiers of Government? The monies that can be used to fund the National budget is the 52.68% of the total revenue that belongs to the FG while the remaining balance is with the other tiers of government. This is why the government resort to borrowing to fund the deficit. So if you are saying the remittances is larger than the budget figures, yoy should also know that not all that remittances belong to FG, part of it belongs to states and local government. States and local government do not implement National Budgets, it is the FG that does only with it's own percentage of total remittances. |

There i nothing wrong with the PRINCIPLE of T-Bills. What is wrong here is the rate @ 10% it means that interest rate for the real sector reaches over 20% It is good news for "savers" with capital but bad news for entrepreneurs How can a Nigerian enntrepreneur compete with an entrepreneur from aa 4% interest rate economy. Add to that the lack of power ad you are saying as a government "we will never industrialize" What about Farmers In the US they get loans as low as 3 % not to talk of technology So we are doomed to importing their chicken? Reality is we need to understand the full impact of high interest rates. Also what is "high" in rich countries is "low" for us but this is not all determined by us High interest rates are a direct consequence of IMF intervention under Babangida and the attendant structural reform including financiall market liberalization They allow low interest rates in their countries but not for us. They develop we stagnate buut our rich get richer Our banks DO NOTHING They don't have to just lend to government The solution? Simple Government should live within its means and stop borrrowing. Will it happen ? No .Why? Well who benefits from these T- bills 10% of 12 billion dollars a year . @ least It is an INDUSTRY of rent taking money for the boys What is it being used for? |
