I want to study Medicine and Surgery but I don't know the most credible universities in Nigeria that give admission based on merit; your contributions and suggestions are welcomed.

Most public universities(federal) are credible in terms of admission, given that you are able to score high and beat their cut off mark, state universities may be bias (if you are not an indigene), but surely you won't be denied Admission if you get what is expected of you. i don't really know of private universities


Well, based on what I'm familiar with, I've confirmed the credibility of the following public universities


UNN - Admission process so transparent, but very competitive, during the previous admission, cut off mark was 327

UNILAG - transparent but competitive too, last cut off mark was 81.75%

UI - Transparent and also competitive

BUK - Transparent and not too competitive, if you can hit 300+ in JAMB you are sure of getting in.

Just follow the advice above

I've never really considered BUK, plus I've never really hit the 300 benchmark before - around 280 - 290 - but I will now. Thank you so much.

Admission into Medicine is too competitive and strict, I know of some people with 322 ± 1 aggregate, but are given dentistry instead, besides, which course were you given?

Transparency, I can't tell oh. But I doubt that UNN will be very fair.
But with a very good jamb score (at least 300) you should get a any of these schools.

Your target jamb score should be 320 if you really want to be confident about getting admission in medicine in these schools.

Now on my own hypothesis, I believe that The order of credibility of MED school in Nigeria spans from:

Federal university-> State university->Private university.

Although they might be a slight variation in the above sequence as some state university are better equipped than some federal university, and same goes to private and state.

So if i can suggest for you(of which I cannot, but can only give you my view), I'll say u first pick A federal university as Your most preferred choice, then a state university as your preferred choice.

Now we've sorted out How to kill the Cow, it's now left for how to cook it.

There are many Federal university(Credible, Because if not credible, they wouldn't have been accredited) out there that offer MBBS as a course. So selecting one should boil down to what you want.

And since you haven't mentioned distance or school fees, but have specifically Stressed MERIT as your Preference then I'll say we take the next bus going to history lane.

The best way to know if a school admit students based on merit is to check their fossil record(No mind me, I mean previous records), and how are we going to do that, let's take and Buttress this criterion which is "Cut off mark".

Some schools do publicize their cut-off mark, others don't.. Have you asked yourself why?.. The one that do have a reason for doing such, why the ones that don't also have a reason for doing such..

I might not rarely know why such is such, but I can only infer that those who publicize their cut off mark does so for transparency, while the other don't want to be accountable for Any complaint.

So if you are looking for a school that would offer you admission based on MERIT, then Try going for schools that Publicize their Cut off mark, that way u would know where the fault cometh from.

So for schools that make public their cut off mark are predominantly schools in the west. Example but not limited to are: UI, Unilag, OAU, Lasu, UNN(East), et cetra. So do your maths based on their previous cut off mark and see if you are worthy to apply in such school.

I'm a 200l student of uniport, actually the admission process in Uniport is quite fair to a large extent. Before I was admitted i knew no one in the admission board but even with my "not too good score of Utme (291)" I was still given medicine and surgery. if you can hit 290 and above give uniport a try I bet you won't regret it.

Some schools are not worth it bro. My only regret is that I told myself ''medicine or nothing''. If only I was properly guided or carried out my findings, I would've been in the Uni by now studying MBBS.

Yeah, dear aspirant, I'm a freshman-- UNICAL, BDS. I must say that the admission process is quite fair. If you're from any of the South-South states, you have an edge (Catchment). If you're from any of the ELDS-Education Less Developed States, you stand a good chance.

At present, the cut off mark for Medsurg is 296 Merit, as published by the school. Then, there were distributions to most states of their specific cut off marks, lower than the general cut off mark for Merit, Catchment or ELDS as the case may be. By the way, Dentsurg is pegged at 272 Merit.

Mode of calculation is UTME score + Post UTME score ÷ by 2.

The Post UTME was 40 questions to be taken within 20 minutes--- English, Maths, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Current affairs. English was about 20 questions while others shared the remaining 20 slots. Strictly O level questions!

They also do entertain subscriptions to supplementary admissions. They sometimes refer one to another course also, should one not meet up with one's first choice course. That one, perhaps, has no means of checking it's transparency.

SECOND CHOICE CANDIDATES are not considered!

UNN is very competitive that's why... its not about transparency, its not the problem.

most easterners settle for UNN so it is very competitive. its not about the school not being fair. if that was the case, then one could also say UI isn't fair.
