I want to study Medicine and Surgery but I don't know the most credible universities in Nigeria that give admission based on merit; your contributions and suggestions are welcomed.

It's definitely about bias.
Check the most chosen school in jamb, you won't find unn in 1st 3. That's a typical problem there, but they'll start wailing when ui or Unilag deny dem admission.
This people are very intolerant to others but come to Lagos and kano and see them forming landlord...
Check and compare the ratio of Igbo students in Unilag and Abu to Yoruba or hausa/Fulani students in unn and be the judge.

unilag isn't in the top 3 either and UNN is 4

and that is still a high level of competition

and why'd u have to bring triablism to this

don't u think u have a problem?

Good day boss.

I like the fact that you bolded two key words in your post.

Credible and Merit

Now on my own hypothesis, I believe that The order of credibility of MED school in Nigeria spans from:

Federal university-> State university->Private university.

Although they might be a slight variation in the above sequence as some state university are better equipped than some federal university, and same goes to private and state.

So if i can suggest for you(of which I cannot, but can only give you my view), I'll say u first pick A federal university as Your most preferred choice, then a state university as your preferred choice.

Now we've sorted out How to kill the Cow, it's now left for how to cook it.

There are many Federal university(Credible, Because if not credible, they wouldn't have been accredited) out there that offer MBBS as a course. So selecting one should boil down to what you want.

And since you haven't mentioned distance or school fees, but have specifically Stressed MERIT as your Preference then I'll say we take the next bus going to history lane.

The best way to know if a school admit students based on merit is to check their fossil record(No mind me, I mean previous records), and how are we going to do that, let's take and Buttress this criterion which is "Cut off mark".

Some schools do publicize their cut-off mark, others don't.. Have you asked yourself why?.. The one that do have a reason for doing such, why the ones that don't also have a reason for doing such..

I might not rarely know why such is such, but I can only infer that those who publicize their cut off mark does so for transparency, while the other don't want to be accountable for Any complaint.

So if you are looking for a school that would offer you admission based on MERIT, then Try going for schools that Publicize their Cut off mark, that way u would know where the fault cometh from.

So for schools that make public their cut off mark are predominantly schools in the west. Example but not limited to are: UI, Unilag, OAU, Lasu, UNN(East), et cetra. So do your maths based on their previous cut off mark and see if you are worthy to apply in such school.

NOTA BENE: The above mentioned schools are not just competitive, but are super competitive as such sector of the country can be substituted for a metropolis.

The above comment was Navigating according to your request on credibility and merit... But deep down me i would have suggest the unique university of Port Harcourt(uniport), for various reasons, as that(based on my judgement) is The only school in Nigeria that confirms To the qualifications of Cheap, Easy to enter, Good facilities, merit Admission, and above all UNIQUE in her own way...Boss @Donpre and @Brukx can confirm what am saying wink
Confirmed truth

that's not true. the schools you mentioned admit purely on merit.

few Yoruba and Hausa opt for UNN, Yoruba feel their western schools are okay that's why they are not much in UNN. One of UNN's DVCs is a Yoruba man, the chancellor is the oni of ife too, check your facts before accusing Igbo falsely.

Don't mind him and his likes. if UNN is doing badly, they will say their western schools are superior. if UNN is doing well, they will accuse her of tribalism and biase.

no one is as competitive as the Igbo in Nigeria, we are everywhere, i mean EVERYWHERE, (business, trade, academia) that cannot be said in THE SAME BREATHE about others with all due respect.

Wow, BDS; CONGRATULATIONS. I've read and heard lots of negative reviews about UNICAL and how you sometimes have to pay your way through or have an inside man or both in order to get admitted. Thank you Sir for your help.

You're welcome.

By the way, I'm from the Eastern part of the country, not within Catchment, not within ELDS. Purely on merit and it worked without man-know-man; Most of my colleagues I've had a chat with, too. So, I think the bribery thing is similar to every "Nigeria" school you hold at high esteem. They adhere to the published cut off marks, and theirs is unique in my opinion.

I totally agree with you. I can tell you a lot about MBBS UNN. UNN is very much transparent with their MBBS admission merit list, just that it is highly competitive . But they consider educationally less developed areas. A northerner or Westerner applying to UNN has much higher chances of getting admission than an easterner. This is because UNN considers geopolitical zones and they tend to take people from all the zones. But northerners and westerners hardly apply to UNN because they believe their schools will consider them more and that is why they are scanty there. Northerners hardly apply to UNN but I know few westerners that did and they got admission at lower cut off than Unilag will offer them. The competition is already there for Easterners as they all flood UNN.Let me give you an example, around 2002,MBBS cut off for Anambra state at UNN was 278.Westerners with JAMB scores of 265 got admission because they were very few. People from the east with Jamb score of 275 were denied admission. But a guy from Taraba with JAMB score of 216 appeared on the merit list and he got admision( even though he was wiped out of the department after first year as he failed more than one first year course. The rule then was expulsion out of the department if you fail more than one of the first year courses and the guy failed more than 5 courses).

Year 1 is usually expensive (ranging from 90 to115k) but subsequent years (ie yr2 to Final yr) is 45k

2017 MBBS merit cutoff 290
2018 MBBS merit cutoff 250.

Admission in UDUS is usually base on UTME score only, if thing does not changed.

Lolz.
D higher the UTME score, the higher the admission chance and state of origin plays important role.

Many people from Lagos are studying in UDUS, people from south south geopolitical zone are also found there, i am from south west, so distance should not be an obstacle.

If you have N1.2 million, apply to this new Federal University: Alex Ekwueme Federal Univeristy Ndufu Alike, Ikwo, Ebonyi state. They offer MBBS and its less competitive.
It is not accredited yet
You can enter but graduating is impossible without accreditation from MDCN for the school which is not easy to get.

Your aggregate is 307.5, this is not close to the cut off mark. Where is the 'unn ain't transparent at all?"

If you applied to UI or unilag, believe me you won't still get in with such score.
