I am absolutely certain that ALL Christians, from the pope all the way up, occasionally have doubts about their beliefs in those quiet moments when they have the time and silence to ask questions of themselves. There are many stories of people wrestling with their faith. Of course, when asked directly, they always claim to have unshakeable belief, but that’s just human psychology (e.g. the sunk cost fallacy) at work. In reality, religious faith (especially in a world in which theists have been forced by science to squeeze their god into ever-shrinking gaps) is a fragile bubble. This is why all successful religions have a form of regular communal religious worship - the social proof of communal worship strengthens shaky religious faith.

Then along comes an atheist. With just a few words, they make sharp, clear, incisive stabs at this bubble. A Christian’s faith is under attack, and psychological beliefs are a very personal thing; years of personally investing in that belief is very hard to suddenly surrender, especially if it comes from another human being. And so, the Christian feels under attack from the atheist.

And the Christian has nothing to defend themselves with. They have no evidence and no logical arguments. All they can do - and I’ve seen this many times myself - is repeat the same defeated arguments over and over again, or just assert that they ‘know’ there’s a god, or they get angry and start name-calling.

So I can see why a Christian might hate an atheist. Truth can be a scary thing.
