The Southern and Middle Belt leaders forum has convened an emergency meeting over the suspension of Walter Onnoghen as chief justice of Nigeria (CJN). On Friday, President Muhammadu Buhari suspended Onnoghen and appointed Ibrahim Muhammadu as the acting CJN. He backed his action with an order of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT). In a statement signed by Edwin Clark (south-south); Ayo Adebanjo (south-west); John Nwodo (south-eeast) and Pogu Bitrus (middle belt), the group demanded a reversal of the suspension, describing it as “a coup against constitutional democracy in”. It called on Nigerians to rise up against “dictatorship” and use all legal means to defend the democracy. “This is a constitutional crisis foisted by desperation and morbid desire to foist rule of thumb,” the statement read. “We have checked through the constitution and the President has no power to unilaterally suspend the CJN. “Section 292 of the amended 1999 Constitution is clear that the President can only remove the CJN with 2/3 of Senate resolution. “To us, what has been done is resort to self-help after the Court of Appeal issued an order stopping the trial of the CJN by the CCT presided over by a man answering charges in court over corruption allegations but still in office. “The latest action is a clear suspension of the constitution and enthronement of full blown dictatorship. “We reject the illegal suspension and demand its immediate reversal. The suspension is null and void and of no effect whatever. An emergency meeting of the Forum holds shortly on this total aberration. “We call on all Nigerians to wake up to the reality that our democracy is now under threat and use all constitutional means to defend it. Onoghen has been suspended, u guys should come to reality. the best thing u guys can do is to approach the court of law for redress. No one will be spare in this anti corruption fight, we can't have a criminal as CJN. Even those in APC will still be dealt with. It is only Buhari that can pull this through, the nation will be sanitize and more democratic leader will take over, but right now Nigeria need someone that is strong headed and with iron fist to fix this corruption that has form the foundation of this country. Nigeria will be save. Ps: To those fools that want to die at my mention, Oneghen has been remove, if u are so pained, go and lead protest in Abuja tomorrow, but make sure it's only your family member u carry along, the police will be happy to welcome u. Am more surprised that PDP suspended their campaign because of CJN, he must truly be a PDP party card carrying member. If the President can remove a Chief Justice based on a
"court order".....then he can also remove ALL Supreme Court
Judges and the INEC Chief...
The President can also replace the entire elected Legislature
with "court orders"
The Governors can also remove State Chief Judges...
The world will not end in 2019.....

sogodihno: For what? This action, as well as the nominee for IGP, finally put to rest any second thots as to the desperation that is Buhari. After ignoring several court orders in this same country, it is amusing how he is quick to implement a questionable CCT order.
