Johan Cruff is the founder of tiki taka

For those who want to know

Cruyff's coach, Rinus Michels even played a more creative system in the 1974 World Cup. Before that, the Hungarians played an exciting brand of passing football too.

Mighty Magyars: BBC Identifies Legedary Hungarian “Golden Team” As Best-Ever Football Team

The Mighty Magyars dominated world football in the early 1950s. This was a team embarking on a run of more than four years without defeat, and they would go on to reach the 1954 World Cup final.

This is why I have nothing against diving. If a referee can give a yellow because a player takes a ball from a ball boy then what are we talking about? The message they are sending to children is wrong. Cheating is cheating

Yes taiwo has been on decline since ,playing in Finland says a lot about that

But sorry ogbeche is close to 40 ,no come dey tel us say ogbeche use real age because e dey play ball at age 34.

Mbjane stop saying what u know nothing about. Ogbeche just like Amunike played with his real age, not even a second was subtracted. I could remember back in 2012 on kickoffnigeria.com, a good friend/super analyst by name "game147"who was a school mate of Ogbeche at FGC Okigwe shared a pic he took with Ogbeche when Ogbeche was their games prefect in sec school.

For me, the beauty of the game now lies in those moments that transcend the ordinary. The first time I watched that Barcelona team led by Pep Guardiola is one such example. Seeing the ruthless counter-pressing efficiency of Jurgen Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund at the peak of their powers is another.

This week I had this experience again when watching the Dutch comprehensively pick apart the French national team. Their victims are largely untouched since winning the World Cup just a few months ago. It was not that the 2-0 scoreline was overly impressive. It was rather the manner that the Dutch side played in picking apart a strong French side.

I read something in the aftermath of the match which sums the experience up completely. I apologise, but the source escapes me. When rating the French players in the match, the author gave N’Golo Kante a low to middling score. His explanation was that Kante ‘could not run as fast as the Dutch passed the ball’. That in itself encapsulates the Dutch performance in this match and deserves greater examination.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/totalfootballanalysis.com/match-analysis/the-netherlands-tactical-analysis-uefa-nations-league-18-19/amp

The Dutch might not play the pure brand of Rinus Michels but is an innovative adaptation to it. From the likes of Guardiola and Klopp who are students of the theory.

Remember Johan Cruyff played under Rinus Michels and Guardiola and the current coach of Netherlands, Ronald Koeman played under Cruyff. So they have their adaptations and interpretations to make the system work for them.
Any tactic is only good till the day it fails and starts failing.
My argument all this while is that offensive football or conservative is a means to an end - winning

Anyone chiding any team playing too much of either would be unfair.

I totally disagree. Manchester United under Solskjaer and Mourinho is a true picture of my point.

Under Mourinho's system, it was hard to see the qualities of the players. Some thought the players were thrash and wanted them sold.

Under Solskjaer, you can see the individual brilliance of each player.

It is the same with development. Offensive plays demand a lot from players and increase their all round abilities. You can see it in the development of Stones, Otamendi, Sterling and Sane.

Finally, the appeal of an offensive game is an icing to the cake. It is difficult to build a long term dominating team just like we have seen with the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City in recent years, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Barcelona etc by playing Conservative football.

So I will always critique conservative football because it is hardly a long term strategy. It is a system that also slows the progress of players in their individual abilities.

How has "Lucho" (Luis Enrique) arrived at the precipice of a possible treble-winning season?

The basic principles are still the same: Barcelona play possession football with the ball on the deck and produce some of the finest individual moments each and every weekend. They've averaged 69 percent possession across 36 Liga games this season, per WhoScored.com—the highest in Spain and indeed the second-highest in Europe (Bayern average 0.5 percent more)—and utilise a base 4-3-3 formation, as is Barca tradition.

Barcelona under Enrique was second highest in Europe behind Guardiola.

This was reflected in the passing figures. In their title-winning season under Vilanova, in 2012/13, the seven Barça players with the most passes per 90 minutes in La Liga were all central midfielders. The highest averages were hit by Xavi (118.2), Thiago Alcantara (111.9) and Andrés Iniesta (96.3). After those seven came full-backs Dani Alves and Jordi Alba.

That's all changed under Luis Enrique. Barça now keep the ball longer in defence, then find the forwards directly. Messi and Neymar drop deeper to create attacks, while the midfielders move higher and wider and see less of the ball.

Such factors have led to a general loss of control. Barça have gone from a possession average of 65.3% in Luis Enrique’s first season to 62.9% in the second and 61.9% in the third. It has also meant that, out of their top 10 passers in La Liga this season, seven are defenders. Busquets, in particular, is used less: he averaged 93.3 passes per 90 minutes under Vilanova, but has gone from 80.1 to 75 to 72.7 under the current regime

Barcelona set a playmaking benchmark against Borussia Monchengladbach on Tuesday, attempting more passes than any side in a game in Champions League history.

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen set a new passing record in La Liga after completing 51 of his 62 passes against Athletic Bilbao.

The bolded clearly states that Barcelona kept the ball under Enrique, signifying they were still keeping on to possession. The difference was the transition to attack which was done at a faster rate. It is not saying Barcelona was no more a possessive side under Enrique.

Does not change the very simple fact that Enrique is a possessive coach and in his lowest average, he was still possessive. Having a 61.9% possession is high. Very high. If you watch the game with such stat, you will marvel at the brilliant passing game.

Losing possession means they were willing to take more risk to attack and going on the counter is them striking back when they regain possession. It does not mean they were not keeping possession on a high scale.

The point is too simple.
