I got this story from my neighbourhood and I wish to find out how one may want to take up a spouse who is Positive as a wife or husband. The story goes does, that a young of 37 years wants to get married, but the Lady, 31 years is positive. Though, the lady has started taking retro viral drugs early enough. Therefore, subsequent opportunistic infection and total collapse of the immune system is under control. That he desire to continue with the marriage. Here are questions;
1. Irrespective of retro-viral drugs, can such patients live with such condition for up to 30, 40 or even 50 years, just surviving with drugs?
2. Have you seen someone who has lived with such condition for up to 20 or 30 years? Calculating their ages, if you add 20 or 30 years, they may live just 57, or 67 and 51 or 61 respectively.
3. Or even if they are above that age or less what is the life span one has ever lived or survive with retro viral drugs?
4. Do such patients live above 70 year?
5. Have you seen anyone who has live above 70 years?

Note: The man in questions is still negative. He may have been taking Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) drugs which is very effective to stop infection.

Here are my worries, can someone take in a positive person as a spouse or for how long can they survive? Doctors in the house or other experienced contributions would go a long way to educate us. Recommendations and forums of such discussions would be highly appreciated. Thanks

Yes ths is possible. There’s no reason why HIV should be a barrier to getting married. And yes people who are positive can have healthy lives. The main thing is that they take medication.

Yes, of course they can. They can also potentially have a child the old fashioned way and the baby will most likely be born negative, provided they find a doctor experienced with high risk pregnancy and the mother is dedicated to taking the meds necessary for an amazing outcome

Yes these are questions that can be answered by Professionals, that was why I did mention that those with experience or invariably any forum where such discussions are made can be given, if any. Note, I do not said anything discriminatory up there.

Watch 'Shuga'. It's a very educative TV series about preventing and managing HIV.

Y not? If he/she takes his/her drugs at the right time, you guys are good to go, without any fear but with a condition to always use condoms except you need a child.

an HIV patient that takes his medication faithfully, long enough will get to a stage where the viral load is so low, he or she is no longer infectious.
Even with unprotected sex, the spouse can still be safe at that point.
So in theory, yes it could happen. It has happened and it continues to happen
Re: Can Someone Marry HIV Patient? by CosmicSensation: 12:10pm On Feb 08, 2019
HIV as a virus is not what kills its patients. What it does is to open the door for just about any disease causing organism to come come in and wreck havoc.
Disease causing organisms that a non infected person ordinarily would be able to keep at bay.

This because the hiv virus attacks the cells in our body whose main job is to defend us from disease causing organisms, rendering us defenseless.

There are no drugs to eliminate the viruses from our body yet, for complex reasons that I don't need to delve into but there are drugs to stop it from multiplying in the body, and these drugs can keep its population to levels that are barely detectable.

At that stage, the patient becomes just like every other person and can live for as long as every other person, as long as he or she continues to take medication.

Like I said before the viral load can even become so low, that they become incapable of infecting anyone else

@liba what i'm surprise some times in nairaland is picking loop holes to criticise and condemn ordinarily what should not have been a problem. One longevity is naturally orchestrated by God, i thought they could be any evidence of such cases or not.

Hmmm!. If it is only taking drugs alone is a different, but if any other infection set in, it is dangerous here. This is base on some answers above and other findings. Anyway it is good to stay safe.
