Lagos-based businessmen are groaning because of high taxes. Funnily enough, LASG doesn't care as they are even taking the land use tax seriously. Sadly, businesses are taxed for everything in Lagos, including their sign posts, which LASAA measures and taxes annually.

The truth is, all this happens because it is Lagos, the commercial capital of Nigeria. But I think it's a way of discouraging small business owners from moving to Lagos because Lagos is already overcrowded.

If another state tries this nonsense, there will be a mass exodus of companies from that state. Overtaxation kills businesses.

There won't be a mass exodus of anything because nobody pays taxes in nigeria. If people paid taxes in nigeria, state and federal budgets will run in the hundreds of billions and trillions of naira. If the federal government taxed eligible nigerian tax payers a MEASLY 1000 naira a month, that alone can yield them more than 10 trillion naira for the nigerian government. If imo state taxed their eligible tax payers 1000 naira a month, that will be about 24 billion naira a year, just on a flat personal income tax. Add that to real estate, business and sales tax and they could VERY EASILY generate 60 billion naira a year.

Developed countries built their entire infrastructure on taxes. And boy, they taxed everything. There's a tax everytime money changes hands ie everytime you buy something. When you go to the market and buy food, you pay taxes. When you buy clothes, shoes, jewelry, you pay taxes. When you buy furniture, fan, microwave, fridge and other electrical products, you pay taxes. When you buy a car, you pay taxes. When you go to register the car, you pay taxes. When you buy airtime, you pay taxes. When you pay electric bill, you pay taxes. If you own a property (houses) you pay taxes. When you own rental property (apartment for rent) you pay taxes on each apartments. When you put money in savings account, you pay taxes on the interest yield. When you get paid (salary) you pay taxes. When you buy fuel, you pay taxes. When you buy car parts, you pay taxes. When your mechanic fix your car, you pay taxes. When you buy luxury items like private jets, helicopters or boats (yachts) you pay taxes. When you earn money on stock, you pay taxes. YOU PRACTICALLY PAY TAXES ON EVERYTHING.

Up until the 1960's, american millionaires paid upwards of 90% of their personal income in taxes. If you don't know what this means, when multi billionaires Rockefeller earned $100 million in personal income, the american government will take 90% of the $100 million, which is $90 million. It was president Kennedy that reduced it to less than 50% of personal income in the 1960's. Nowadays, the personal income tax (effective rate) of wealthy americans is between 20% to 30% of income. Personal income tax is of course lower for low income americans and even lower for low income americans with children but they still pay the several other taxes I just highlighted above.

As you can see, if you live in a developed country, everytime you breath, you pay taxes. Anywhere you have very large population, you can generate billions and billions, by taxing goods and services. Taxes is what civilized soceities used to develop their countries. They did not develop with mineral resources. Their governors didn't run to the federal government to collect money every month. Their mayors didn't wait for their governors to develop their cities and towns. Each locality was empowered to develop by themselves and the way they developed was by raising their own REVENUES.
There's enough commercial activities in orlu, okigwe and owerri to raise their own revenues, build their own infrastructure and pay for other city maintenances and services.

Any country that does not tax it's citizens will never ever develop.

Uncle, with regard to this statement, I beg to differ. Nigerians pay income taxes. Yes, I know for certain because I've worked in well-established organizations. The challenge we have with tax collection include non-remittance, tax evasion, tax avoidance, etc. But that doesn't in anyway mean that nobody pays taxes in Nigeria. Yes, I once managed a company where the staffers paid PAYE taxes, and we also paid corporate taxes. So, don't tell me that we don't pay taxes.

You may argue that we are not heavily taxed as obtained elsewhere in the world, and I will agree. Come to think of it, why would any government be heavily taxing her people where over 70% of the people (according to CNNMoney) live in abject poverty?

What's more? In advanced countries, governments tax differs from country to country. And a new government can come in and change the tax structure, just like the tax debate is on in the US now. Again, Nigerians pay taxes but taxes are not vigorously pursued in Nigeria because of oil.

It might interest you to know that FIRS is the second richest government parastatal in Nigeria after the ministry of petroleum. So, if Nigerians don't pay taxes where does the money come from?

Uncle, you can argue all you want, but when businesses are heavily taxed, they will move. That's the way the cookie crumbles. Finally, many state governments give companies tax holidays in Nigeria just so they move to their states and create jobs. And yes, those are the states they would move to.

my friend sherup. Am from Rivers state but most weekends I spend it in owerri just like most of my friends. Owerri is a relaxation and hospitality city just like Miami, las Vegas of this world. The city is quit seren and beautiful with cool spots for your entertainment.
Do you know that just an average hotel/casino there makes over ten million naira a month. Do you know how many of such are there and more that are currently springing up? That means billions to the government. Do you know that las Vegas make more many in hospitality industry than Nigeria make in oil?
Again IMO is an oil and gas producing state. Their are a lot of multinationals and indigenous oil n gas firm that means billions in igr for the state. In fact IMO has one of the biggest state economy in Nigeria. It is the Fifth largest economy (do a little Google search)
The economy is even expanding as real estate has become the next biggest thing in the state

Tell your useless father to shut up. I am from Nkwerre but i know that Owerri and imo state at large is useless, hopeless, worthless and backward. Owerri is a useless place filled with bad roads and filth and prostitutes and armed robbers. I am always outside Imo state because it is a dungeon.

The only reason any sane person will make a stop at Imo state is because of cheap imo prostitutes and cheap brothels. There's nothing imo state is known for except prostitution.

Average person in imo state is poor. There is no Imo made rich man anywhere. Any rich man you sight in Imo state is just passing through the state to other states.

Imo state should develop a proper industrial masterplan if not it will continue to remain a pariah state filled with all the ills of society.

If Uche Nwosu succeeds Okorocha and continues undeterred in the next 5 to 10 years we should be talking about Singapore type of development because he hired international experts from Singapore that drew the map and procedure of what he is doing in Imo modeled after Singapore of 1965. His problem has been lack of funds which slowed down execution but it's obvious that Imo is heading in right direction.

Of course, for your sanity as well as continuation of your stipends, Uche Nwosu needs to become the next governor.
Just take it easy for your mental health. Governments come and go, and life must go on, irrespective of whoever becomes governor.

Check the second paragraph of my post. I've lived both in nigeria and the US and I know very well that nigerians absolutely don't pay any taxes on those things I listed. They don't pay any taxes when they buy food, buy fuel, buy airtime, pay nepa electric bill, buy cars, buy furniture, or buy any of those things I listed on my second paragraph. You can go back and reread it.

As for PAYE tax and other taxes you listed? Well, the percentage of that to the general eligible nigerian tax payers is probably less than 1%. Millions and millions and millions of nigerians receive their salaries without any deductions for taxes. Millions and millions and millions of others are not captured in the tax net. It's impossible to capture millions and millions of hawkers, roadside and street traders, attachment traders and the likes. If you go back several pages of this thread and the enugu thread on nairaland, I highlighted exactly this nigerian 5 tier commercial activities of hawkers roadside and street traders, attachment traders and ndi oso ahia traders, and how it's possible for localities to collect taxes. I suggested that the state should collect property taxes and the cities to collect sales taxes.

Millions of nigerians earn their money on the street. When I went to the bank for my BVN, the person who took my passport picture was operating on the street. When I accompinied my nephew to get his marriage certificate, the person who took the picture of the ceremony was on the street. There are 100,000 people selling exactly the same things on every street corner of every nigerian city. 100,000 people selling spare parts. 100,000 people selling electrical parts, 100,000 people selling in mini supermarket. This is gross. To capture people in a tax dragnet, you must formalize the informal sector.

God continue to bless those who continue to invest and grow the tourism and hospitality sectors of IMO state. Owerri remains the most beautiful city in the SE and even the SS, NC and NE. Only people who have travelled across Nigeria will know that only Abuja and some parts of Lagos are ahead of Owerri in tourism and beauty. Manufacturing industries can be located in Okigwe and Orlu, oil and gas industry can be located in Oguta but, Owerri remains our tourism capital.

Tourism and hospitality, real estate etc is booming in Owerri and rich guys from P.h, Aba, Onitsha and other cities around like to come to Owerri to relax and spend their money which is partly the reason why things are relatively expensive in Owerri than other cities in the East except P.H.
