A staff of Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) was assaulted and beaten with a machete while trying to disconnect light in an area in Lagos.

In a video which has gone viral on Facebook, the man and the IKEDC official can be seen engaging in a serious fight before the resident rushed to his house to get a machete.

Despite being begged by residents to stop the fight, the young man descended on the official with the weapon.

This is coming after some family members were filmed fighting IKEDC officials over disconnection of their light at Ikeja, Lagos state, last month.

They didn't sale NEPA, they only privatised the power regulations. NEPA as a body still belongs to the Nigerian government but it's marketing activities is privatised.

Power distribution and generation have been privatised.

Only transmission remains in the hands of the Government (security reasons).

Under the arrangement, raising cash for the whole power system is now in private hands.

NEPA has ceased to exist since at least 2014

Distribution companies should step up and provide prepaid meters. All meters should be install in an assessable location by power distribution company. That way it will reduce the problem of meter bypass.

Heavy fine or imprisonment for defaulters. Just as it is in the US. It is a national law .

Power metering is the best way to go. You see over time Nigerians will become use to it. Power supply will become very regular.

The will help improve the standard of living.

I am going to blame PDP for this mess...and not the APC.

When PDP privatised power in 2013/14, they brought in a law that made Government to be the one setting the prices that the DISCOS would be charging.

As a result, DISCOS cannot charge the prices they want for power. And they are forced by law to pay for power at a price below the cost of production. Which makes it difficult for them to make money...and by extension to fund new facilities.

Add the fact that many people don't pay for power. (ABUJA DISCO has a compliance rate in some areas as low as 48%, except in Abuja itself)...and add the fact that due to the resulting uncertainty in power....the DISCOS cannot raise enough funding...which prevents them from securing loans from banks (unlike the GSM companies which can get loans from banks because there was no law forcing them to lower their prices, plus you cannot use a phone unless you pay money...you can bypass a NEPA meter though)..and we have the mess that we have.

The way forward is for government to allow DISCOS to charge whatever they want, plus allow competition across boundaries., in addition to making sure everyone gets a prepaid meter.Otherwise, we take a hefty loan of $900bn US dollars just to fix things.

They are a monopoly. They cant charge whatever they like. However the govt should fix what's reasonable. Now we pay around 21 we should be paying like 38 to 50
