2019 Foldable Phones : Do We Actually Need Foldable Phones? by NaijaTechGuy(m): 2:01pm On Feb 22, 2019 |
Recently we have seen smartphone companies jump on the foldable phone bandwagon isn’t a bit surprising but the biggest question I ask myself each time is this Do we actually need foldable phones? Before I dive into the whole foldable phone issue, let me take you on a little trip back in time. Starting from when our regular smartphone designs started witnessing some major changes. So without further ado, let’s get started. In general, smartphone companies have always been competing with each other in order to get a larger market share with top Chinese companies like Vivo, Xiaomi And Oppo pushing design aesthetics to the max, sure enough, they’ve gotten a lot of attention within the mobile phone Industry and are even the. We all can clearly remember when Xiaomi started the bezelless trend back in 2016 with the release of the Xiaomi Mi Mix which was one of the first smartphones if not the first with very slim bezels. Chinese Companies, Oppo and Vivo also pushed design limits to the edge by moving the position of the front camera in their phones – The Oppo Find X and Vivo Nex respectively. Take a look at these two devices. You can clearly see what Oppo and Vivo did with their designs. In the Oppo Find X, both the front and rear camera’s are hidden and only slides up when you open the camera app while in the Vivo Nex only the front camera slides up. Both designs are great but believe the “Nigerian” in me is still scared that the mechanical parts could fail. The way you feel when your camera doesn’t work on a regular phone would be worse on a phone with moving parts when it doesn’t even respond. So basically here’s what our smartphones have gone from in the past couple of years and the last one is the new trend smartphone companies are heading to – Foldable Phones As much as it seems awesome. I still find it awkward. Personally, I don’t know why they came up with this but if they are trying to bring back that nostalgic feeling that the foldable phones in the early 2000’s gave us, with the current technology in place, they aren't very far from it. There are companies that are still testing this at the moment, those who have already released theirs and those who have simply shelved the entire idea at the moment because I believe they understand the market more. Brands like LG have completely shelved the idea for now according to their head of mobile communications and home entertainment divisions Brian Kwon According to Kwon, the company weighed a potential release alongside the launch of its 5G phone. But rather than introduce a foldable smartphone at this time, the company plans to hold off while it gauges consumer responses to folding smartphone technology. Per the Korean Times, Kwon added:The market demand for smartphones is expected to be at around 1 million but LG’s main target in smartphone business is to regain its market position. Considering this situation, it is too early for LG to launch a foldable smartphone. In terms of technology, we are fully ready to respond depending on consumers’ reactions (to foldable smartphones). So while LG is trying to study the market properly, Samsung already released theirs and I’m very curious to see how people respond to this. Samsung’s current device costs around the $1980 dollar mark . I guess we would have to wait for a proper review to know how it works in general but still – What do we need a foldable phone for ? |

Yes we need them. But i can't spend on one for now 2000$, will wait till 2020 when there'd be less expensive ones. If Apple comes in, it would be a massive boom for them - iPad folding to iPhone, you know what that means. |

And its 2,600$ that's almost a million naira........ Huawei just rushed things here.........let's wait for the final release |
