It was a 4 hours drive, 2 hours from Lagos to Abeokuta and an extra two hours from Abeokuta to Ijebu Ode where the burial site of The Queen of Sheba is located. The Queen of Sheba is popularly called Bilikisu Sugbon by the Yoruba Ijebu clan of Ijebu Ode Nigeria.

Before visiting the site, all I knew about the site was what I was told about the site by the present commissioner of culture and tourism in Ogun State; RT. Hon. Muyiwa Oladapo. He mentioned all the cultural and heritage sites that are present in Ogun State that needs more promotion, while stating the development plans for the sites.

Before he mentioned this destination to me, I knew nothing about it, which like I mentioned in my PREVIOUS POST, the major thing lacking in tourism in Nigeria is branding and promotion. Upon doing a few research about the site online, it was confirmed by Patrick Darling an Archaeologist at Bournemouth University that Ijebu Ode consist of the remains of the ancient kingdom, however, the argument against it at the moment is the dating.

The Journey
I find myself sleeping on every road trip and this one was not any different, so I can not describe to you how the whole journey was except for the fact that there were quite a few hills while approaching the site and the road from Abeokuta to Ijebu Ode was not as bad as I imagined it to be.

It was about 3pm when we got to OKE-ERI community, it is a small Muslim community with a simple lifestyle and little or no access to technology. We got down from our vehicle to greet the Baale (community head) before heading to the destination.

We were just about 10 minuets away from the tourist destination while walking, and about 3 minuets away while driving when I started to get a little bit excited in anticipation of what I was to see and experience only to get there and be told we could not enter, or rather “I” as a female could not enter.

The myth behind it is that if a lady in her prime enters the grave site, she will enter menopause asap. The belief is that any female that enters the site cease to be reproductive. I haven't been privileged to confirm this, but my grandfather once told me it has been experimented with a female dog.

I once had a privilege to the hardcopy portrait of the said woman. Real or fake, I can't verify. Will check archives if I can get it.

I'm interested in how you feel the Government can brand this cultural site because I personally believe there is so little to be attracted to.

Sungbo's Eredo has also been connected with the legend of the Queen of Sheba which is recounted in both the Bible and Quran. In the Hebrew Bible, she is described as having sent a caravan of gold, ivory and other goods from her kingdom to Solomon. In the Quran she is an Ethiopian sun-worshiper involved in the incense trade who converts to Islam; commentators added that her name was "Bilqis". Legends of the contemporary Ijebu clan link the Eredo to this fabled woman, a wealthy, childless widow named Bilikisu Sungbo. According to them, the monument was built as her personal memorial. In addition to this, her grave is believed to be located in Oke-Eiri, a town in a Muslim area just north of the Eredo. Pilgrims of Christian, Muslim and traditional African religions annually trek to this holy site in tribute to her. Recently, archaeology has seemingly proven that the time of reign of the biblical queen is not in tandem with the chronology of the massive earthwork. This notwithstanding, the archaeology of Sungbo's Eredo is a pointer to the presence of a large polity in the area before the opening of the Trans-Atlantic trade. [3]

This sounds like a very interesting journey. The pictures are just amazing. There is so many historical sites that should be visited, but unfortunately many of us don’t have time or money to take such journey. It would be lovely to hear more from you about your journeys
