Are The Igbos Really Taking Over Our Land? by LegalOpinion: 4:36pm On Feb 26, 2019
I've wanted to stay away from this Igbo-Yoruba issue again, but I've been seeing some narratives that keep making my blood boils.

And the recent one has to do with how Igbos are 'taking over our lands'. And this is where I lost it.

Look, if you are of the opinion that Igbos are taking over your lands, whatever that means, I want to categorically call you a fool, and I don't care if your feelings are hurt.

I mean what the actual Bleep?!

One, whose lands exactly are they taking over? The ones you inherited or what? The ones you left undeveloped or another one? The ones you sold them at inflated rate or which one? Abeg shift base!

Instead of complaining about their encroachment, why not develop some balls and go and take over their lands as well? Why not offer them ludicrous amount of money for a plot of land and see if they won't sell? Why not leave your families and kin behind and go to a land you know absolutely nobody and settle their? Why not leave your comfort zone that you are not developing and not progressing in and settle down somewhere and grow?

I keep defending my race that we are not cowards, but when I look at this critically, we really are. We have no mind and balls to settle anywhere else because obviously, everyone is dangerous. We can't live in the North or the East because everyone except us is dangerous. I don't want to insult those who have lost lives and properties in intertribal wars in both areas of the country, but we need to peel our eyes back and see properly.

We are just scared. Yes, scared. Myself inclusive.

Scared of being adventurous. Scared of being away from our people. Scared of losing and starting again. Scared of competition. Scared of everything that other major tribes ain't scared of.

Two years ago, I went to a part of my state that I've never been to before. I never even knew the place existed. Guess who had the only mini market in that village? Yeah damn right. An Igbo boy. Not a man. A boy. He sells everything they want. I was amazed. I spent close to 30 minutes interrogating him. He was barely 20years old. Yes, I was scared for him.

And that's how it is in the whole country. The Igbos remain the only tribe in the country that are never afraid of going to new places to establish. If they fail in a business, they start another one. I keep seeing them everyday in my town, trying selling something new every time. Trying to make it despite the obvious hostility around them. Most of us who are complaining about them would rather buy from them than the Yorubas.

They keep going to places to create new things, and all we do is beef them. The first major supermarket in Ado-Ekiti, Okoli, was from an Igbo man. The current trending one, NAO Supermarket, is owned by an Igbo. The entire bank road of Ado-Ekiti was bought by an Igbo man in the late 80s and 90s, and he has been selling to all the banks in that areas since then.

And what are we busy doing? Shitting in our pants shouting "They are taking over our lands". Hehehehehehehehe!!! Fada Lawd! Our entire computer villages are littered with them. They move out and own shit! We...? We just sit our asses down and complain about how the money they use in buying all these are blood and ritual money! Hehehehehehehehe!!! Really?! A Yoruba man calling an Igbo man a ritualist! Fada Lawd!

Even the Northerners are setting up Shasha markets all around us, and where the heck are we and what are we doing in their own states? Nothing.

Let's grow some balls. No one will 'eat' us in Igbo lands. I served in the interiors of Anambra, precisely in Akpo in Aguata Local Government, in a community school inside the bush there. I trek daily inside that Bush for a whole bloody year, and no one ate me or used me for money. They gave me foods, they offered their daughters to me in marriage. They wanted me to settle among them. I know those who cried when I was leaving. I know those of my colleagues that settled there. I know of many Yorubas that established there and are making it, dammit!

#Sigh. I've never been angry like this in a long while, and now I'm exhausted. . Let's treat each others like humans first. Let's remove this tribal labelling. Rwandan has done it and is moving forward. Even Nigerians feel more at home in South Africa, the xenophobic country, more than they would feel with other tribes in Nigeria.

And if we feel all these aren't possible, then let's fucking part ways and establish our own separate kingdoms. But like my mum said "Take away the Igbos and see your community become empty".

Enough said!

Op, you have spoken nothing but the truth. Igbos are opportunity seekers just like the Chinese, Indians, Lebanese, Jews etc. They come to a place and look for ways to make it.

They also do it all over Africa,America, Asia and Europe. They don’t like to see opportunities and avenues to make money wasted.

Smart Yorubas are copying them and hustling and making moves.

Smart northerners and minorities are also doing the same.

To be better than the igbo man, you have to compete against him.

Don’t sit in the corner and hate him.

hmmm ... true. nowhere in dis kuntri wey u no go see igbo man despite the hostility the igbo see in some places due to envy and the like. even hausa-fulani people are everywhere in the country doing subsistence businesses, herding cattle and the like.
it is only logical that wherever they reside and do business, they would grow in number and naturally, would have a say in how they want to be governed.

so, no excuse like you rightly opined. do same thing. be adventurous. go to their regions, go to the north, go to the east, endure whatever hostility you may or may not find there like they do in your region. do businesses there, settle there, grow in number and ultimately have a say in governance there - else the realistic thing would be you have your own country, thus having them as foreigners and avoiding whatever threat you feel they could pose in your politics. any other thing like the shameful okota strategy would fail as it is not sustainable fighting to prevent a fellow national of the same country from exercising his/her rights of citizenship because you are all under the same territory, same flag and same international passport.

it's based on a family/brotherhood philosophy.
they focus on d success of d community instead of d individual.
Indians and Chinese adopted it a century ago-
[contribute, sponsor, succeed, train, release]- repeat.
that's why its hard for any Igbo man to brag about personal, legit wealth-
he likely has some people who contributed to his success.
of course, there r exceptions.

Igbos actually brag about personal wealth to some degree but it’s a shame in igbo culture to be the only rich or successful one in the family.

When igbos get rich in business, they make sure that they put their brothers and cousins and other relatives or friends in that business.

This is why wealth is not concentrated in few hands among igbos. Wealth is more spread out.

Unlike in the north.

are you smart at all. even the Chinese have taken over nigeria does not mean nigeria is better than China. it only mean that Chinese have seen opportunities which we Nigerians are blind to see. they come to nigeria, exploit the country and take it back to develop theirs

Age doesn't mean maturity. Americans, Germans, Arabians and Chinese, don't come to Nigeria because It is better than there's, but because there's an opportunity to exploit. So... What's your point?

Note... Aside Lagos, which was developed by Federal government, there's hardly any state on the West that can challenge states in the East, outside Ebony.

You go to odunade Market you see Igbos selling building materials, Hausas will be carrying them for customers but you see thousands of yoruba youths sitting in groups discussing and waiting for parked vehicles leaving the market to collect ticket money they remit to big Ogas. The condition of the yoruba youths is pitiable. Hausas now drive the most Okadas in Lagos but yoruba youths are littered every corners of the streets and bus stops looking for Keke and yellow buses to pounch on.

Yoruba youths are terrible, you visit the Oshodi, Trade Fair, balogun you cant see a yorubaman trading but they are littered in the streets looking for money from motorists and hawkers.

[s]As an Igbo guy, the only problem I have with my people is BRAGGING!

We know different ethnic groups are scattered in Lagos in large number. But once the issue of Lagos comes up, you will hear Igbo people saying Lagos is a no man's land. That statement is a very stupid one. We Igbo should always have this in mind. Lagos is a core Yoruba state. Just because we are plenty there doesn't makes it no man's land. It'd just like Yoruba coming to enugu and say enugu is no man's land. It doesn't makes sense at all.[/s]

u got it wrong. Igbos never copied that method from any body. it is indigenous to them. it's called igbo apprenticeship system. it's a unique economic model. even the ancient igbo iron smelters, potters etc used the same model. such model makes it possible for children of the poor to get training without paying money. payment is in terms of number of years of service to the master b4 freedom. choscaris motors, innoson, ibeto, etc went through that process. it is a practical training system.lets me stop here
