The Almajiri system as we know it, is knitted into the fabric of the northern society not just because it is practically encouraged by Islam as a way for poor children to acquire Islamic education, but also because their teachers and politicians have found they are a profitable way to get money or votes, and this explains why the problem is endemic and efforts to change the system is met with hypocrisy. Unfortunately these children grow up to become burdens on society and end up travelling down south to constitute a further nuisance.

I don't think anyone was trying to defend the system, the defence was more about pointing out the hypocrisy of the southern antagonists who were clearly lashing out at Northerners in the anger and frustration of Atiku's defeat. The hypocrites who were previously crusaders for democracy suddenly became green livered soulless beasts that started hurling insults at northerners for exercising their democratic rights.

The same people who are struggling with the same poverty as the Almajiris (as can be seen by their online begging even here on NL and sub-human pant stealing and satanic yahoo human rituals) instantly mounted their paper high horses to castigate beggars who are victims of society, which is what prompted the #IAmNORTH movement to show that we are NORTHERN and PROUD and cannot be gullible enough to fall for their cheap sifia chest pain & frustration driven blackmail .

We showed trolls like livebynight that with our population we can determine our own leadership and have ZERO apologies for anyone bitter about that. We showed that we are likely better educated and enlightened by the quality of our twitter exchanges. We showed that even though the North is challenged by poverty like the rest of the country (albeit to a higher degree because scarce resources over a larger population will logically spread thinner), we proudly lay claim to successes like Aliko Dangote - the greatest industrialist & richest man in Africa - intellectuals like Dr. Amina Mohammed (UN Dep. Sec. Gen), inventors like Jelani Aliyu (Chevy Volt/GM/) etc. We also asserted that we are ALSO dominant in the military, civil service and wield the kind of unity and political power other regions can only dream of.

You see, the point is to stop feeding their disappointed souls by paying attention to their blackmail; instead remind them why we are FORMIDABLE opponents or ignore their pained rants and focus on moving to the NEXT LEVEL with the choice of the MAJORITY of Nigerians.

I noticed that a certain phrase "I am North" has been circulating after the election, saw that some people have been bragging with it while mixing the positivity and negativity of the phrase without giving in much thought.

I don't have problem with the positive aspect of it, my problem is with the opposite, it really baffles me to see how some of us are celebrating something that is not worthy of celebration such as Almajiri system of education, begging, other petty jobs etc. We ought to condemned the aforementioned problems, we should cover our face in shame rather than bragging with it the earlier we start calling a spade by its name the better for us, I think is better to face our fear rather than shy away from it if we didnt face it definitely it will continue to eat deep down like cancer.


Sincere speaking In some aspect I like the ambition of our southern counterpart their zeal and positive thinking. You will never see them begging in northern streets like our folks are doing down south.The annoying thing is how the beggars and the almajiris thinks that they are entitled in whatsoever you wanted to give them out of righteousness.

Few days ago I watched a video trending, how a Southerner was mocking a northern begger, I felt indifferent about the video because they are the ones that chose to be object of mockery, you will see a healthy man begging in the streets is it laziness or what? The question we should ask ourselves is are there not old men and physically challenge people in the South? Why are they not in the street begging? The funny thing is most of the beggars saved a lot of money throughout their begging career but they will not quit because they think it is an easy or quick money scheme, forgetting that they have lost their self worth and self esteem.

I know that some will agree with me while some may not, whichever maybe the case that's the bitter truth and we must face it.


Lastly to the southerners I like your ambition but i detest your lifestyle.

I agree with you op. Begging should never be glorified But i think there is something you dont understand. The main motive for glorifying it is to hit back at the people especially Igbos who have been using it to degrade the northerners. We may be beggers, but we are better than cultists and drug traffickers. We are better than prostitutes and pirates. We are better than baby factory products and scammers.
