EPISODE 28

“We have succeeded in shooting ourselves on the leg”

Mr Party chairman said solemnly. The little room was silence except for the periodic shuffling of Agbadas and the buzzing of the Air conditioner.

The meeting was not the party’s planned one, it was an emergency meeting for the Inner caucus. And the venue was chosen for the fear that gripped all of them after Usman’s gruesome murder made the news.

“Whoever did this is trying to send a message, he may come for us” Whimpered Honorable wali

The Honorable has always been fearful and pessimistic, sometimes Mrs Party chairman wondered why he was allowed to be part of this Elite party members

“I suspect the president is responsible for this” Alhaji Danjuma said

Mr Party chairman shook his head in the negative “No, Danladi could be desperate but he is not this brutal…”

“He must have paid someone to do the gruesome job for him…” insisted Danjuma

“I still insist he didn’t do this, I have worked with Danladi, brutal murder is not his thing, poisoning yes but not this type of…”

The room was silence again, the men looked at each other helplessly before Mr party chairman spoke again

“That Imam did this” he waited for someone to object but none did “I got a letter from him the morning I saw Usman’s dead body”

Me ya sa? Why?...” Senator Kazeem spoke for the first time

“He is beginning to demand more than we can offer, he played us to his advantage…I am afraid Honorable members, we can no longer control this man or his quest for power…” Mr party chairman heaved a sigh

“we cannot allow him ruin us, he has overstayed his usefulness, we can dispose of him and plan another strategy to get what we want…”

“I am afraid honorable Mohammad, he has become stronger than all of us, this man knows weapons like the back of his palm and commands thousands of faithful followers who would burn this country down in the name of his Allah…”

“We can use his own against him” Senator Kazeem cut in
“How?”

“I know Imam Husayn, at least I know his family so well, I heard he framed his in-law and got him locked up in Kuje for sometime now while his nephew, the son to the old Man he locked up works for him…we could offer the young man something he could not refuse in exchange of selling out his uncle…”

Mr party chairman weighed the suggestion for some time, he didn’t know what to make of it, as long as he wanted to jump into any suggestion that would relief them of the tension hanging on their necks, he would want to be careful not to complicate issues;

“these boys are always brainwashed into doing anything for their leader including sacrificing their families and loved ones…”

“The boy has lost his mother already, and I heard he lost his second wife too, no thanks to his uncle. Now his father is in prison… we could speak to him and get him see the other side of his uncle…then…”

“Where is this boy now?”

“I don’t know… but he would not be hard to find…”

“Make contact Kazeem, then get back to me as soon as possible…I think we should also pay the Old Mallam a visit in his new home at Kuje

*

It wasn’t so difficult to track the big men with the boy. Kazeem could pull strings even in the Enemy’s territory to get what he want, he was a retired military General so playing the fox to get what he want would not be so difficult

“As-Salam alaikum” Kazeem had greeted with all humility he could feign

“Wa-Alaikum Salaam” Husayn had responded, a little disappointed that it wasn’t the voice he had wanted to hear since morning

He had hurriedly excused himself from the secret meeting where plans were being made for another riot in respect of the announced ‘miss world beauty pageant’. He had tried to put up a strong font even though a huge storm was forming inside his head.
The riot would be carried out in four major cities; Kaduna, Jos and Abuja, “send words to brethren in these states, make it violent if you must; burn their houses, set their cars on fire, push into American Embassy in Abuja and bring it down…Allah will make way for you…Islam should not be disrespected like this, and you must not watch Allah blasphemed” he had told them with so much venom.
That was before he felt his phone vibrate, he ran off to his sacred room inside the office and held his phone firmly on his ears.

“Who is this?” he asked when he felt it was a voice he wasn’t used to

“It’s senator Kazeem…”

“Oh! Senator” Husayn adjusted his tone to sound amiable “How is my friend the Party chairman?”

“He sent his greetings, he would want to pay hcurtsey visit one of these days” both knew it was an ice breaker, to pave way for the real conversation

“I heard one of your boys visited an old man in prison here in Abuja, I mean the Man that was alleged to be responsible for the twin bombing”

Husayn didn’t know where the conversation was going to but he decided to play along “I don’t know about that, and the connection any of my boys have with an old man in prison” Husayn laughed nervously

“Well, it got me worried…this act may give us out and I heard the boy in question said somethings he was not supposed to say, and these confessions were recorded…” Kazeem only know about the visit because the arrest and detaining of the Islamic scholar got his attention and he had wanted to know who had wanted the old man locked up and why. And when the news of the prison break got to him, with only the Old man not able to leave, it became obvious that there was something more to that story, so he had bribed his way into Kuje Prison and had gotten himself allies.

“Well Senator…I don’t know what to say, I am not aware of such visit…”

“Imam, the way I see this, I will advise you give up the boy, you know how these things work, if he manages to spill, all of us goes down…and a well-respected cleric like you…”

Husayn has not gotten himself in a position where he lacked words before, but he suddenly felt he could use this to his advantage, after all has been looking for a way to kill Yusuf, what if he throws him in the hands of these politicians and watch them do the job for him?

“I know the boy you are talking about, but I tell you he is not one of us, he is a rebel who is on the run”

Kazeem tried hard to hide his excitement, he was about to get the news he was seeking

“…he left Jos Long ago, with the report I have of him, he should be in Abuja with a little boy who happens to be my son”

“Your Son? Why?”

“I will not tell you that senator, but Yusuf is a very dangerous man, do with his however you please but don’t let him or anyone harm my son…”

“Sure…sure, do you have any idea where we can locate this…Yusuf you mentioned?”

“No for now, he may be hiding in any hotel there in Abuja, he has lots of money with him and I guess he may be armed too”

“Thank you so much Imam, I promise you we will nab him and your name will not be mentioned at all”

That was two hours ago, before Kazeem alerted his party Chairman

“We have the information we are looking for, the boy is here in Abuja and it seems like he has fallen out with the Imam” Kazeem said

“You need to get to him before Husayn gets to him”

Mr Party Chairman dropped the phone, threw 40 milligram of Enalapril inside his mouth, he gulp down th drug with water, tapping his chest to make the drug go down, a habit he picked up as a child, he had hated taking tablets even when his mother would slide the tablet inside balls of food for him to swallow.

He would have taking 20mg of the Hypertension drug, but after what he saw two days ago and the threat that came from the cleric, his heart has been playing bass drum and was threatening to pull off his chest, his Blood Pressure has gone up as well.

He took more water, dropped the bottle on top of the small table in the small hotel room. It was not the kind of hotel he was known for, but he had wanted to be careful of giving a lead to whoever that killed Usman. He had not slept in his mansion since yesterday, and had located this hotel after several search for a safe place for himself.

He had come in wearing a pair of jean and a T-shirt with a face cap, he hoped some miserable blogger didn’t capture his picture or he would be trending on social media the next morning.

He adjusted the pillow that was worse than what he saw in a boarding house in his village community school where he went to commission a toilet three years ago. He turned and tossed on the bed that was as strong as a stone.

He would have switched on the television to keep himself busy but the Hotel has turned off their generator for the night. He thought of calling Mira, but dismissed the thought, Mira would definitely laugh him to scorn and would want to know why he was hiding here, he really needed to f**ck a wet p**sy in other to forget his fear and getting one or two of those cheap prostitutes downstairs would put him at risk. he resolved to watching some pornographic clips of women licking and humping women while he relief his urge.

*

They got to her apartment in the evening after Ukwuoma has been with Ife in the hospital, she had refused to stay outside while the nurses perform their duties on the girl.

Ife was sedated before it was possible for them to tend to her wounds. She was hysterical, screaming and throwing fits and her eyes fixed at a spot like she was in a tussle with an unseen present.

Ukwuoma had wished Ife could wake up and talk to her but she didn’t, not even when it was time for them to go.

The good Lady Doctor was generous enough to share her one-bedroom flat with her, seeing the modesty of the house made her want to run away, ‘I don’t deserve this place’ she had thought

She feared what would happen to the Good lady if the demons that has been following her pay them a visit, like they did to Mariam and had her throat slit.

“Let me stay here with Ife…I can sleep on the floor” Ukwuoma had objected

“It is not allowed ma, besides, my house is big enough for us…”

“What would happen to her? Who will be taking care of her here? What if she needs me?”

“Your daughter will get all the attention she need, the nurses will see to that and you will be coming every morning to see her”

She sat in the good lady’s car and shivered as the rush of fresh air hit her. By the time they got to the house, she was already sleeping.

*

Yusuf stepped out of the hotel, with his pair of tight faded chinos, a shirt and a backpack, one would mistake him for a student except for the little boy by his side.

The boy has a lollypop stuck in his mouth with spittle sliding down from the corner of his mouth and he was trying to walk as fast as the adult that held his hand.

“Excuse me sir, we need you to step over here”

Yusuf cursed softly, he would have worn his military Uniform, it would have saved him being checked

“What for?” he asked, feigning anger

“For security check”

He would have objected, or even created a scene ‘do you know who I am’ would have been the right thing to say, but he didn’t want to draw more attention and get his bag searched

“See Mr Man, I am already late, my sister is waiting for us…”

“We don’t need to act any drama sir, please follow me” the Security guard said and walked towards the gate. Yusuf had two options, to run or to follow the guard, he chosed the later, not knowing how far he would run before his cover would be blown.

“Step in” he was ordered as the door of a waiting tinted Toyota Prado opened for him

“What? Why?”

He wasn’t given the luxury of a response, the security guard pushed him inside the SUV and the child was made to seat at the front seat before the car drove off.

“Mr Yusuf…good to see you”

He wondered how this man on a black tuxedo, well-trimmed beards and a brief case got to know his name.

EPISODE 28

Ba mu damu game da yaron, We care less about the boy as well as you…”

Yusuf had given a side glance at the boy who was fiddling with a bunch of key, unaware how his fate was being decided by some group of powerful men, and an impromptu meeting held in a lavishly furnished seating-room.

“you have no choice here Yusuf, Ba ku wani zabi, you either do what we say or you and your old father rot in prison for the rest of your lives” His captor has said, giving him that smirk which reminded him of his Uncle Husayn.

Shin yaron (The boy)” Yusuf said, moving his head to the direction of the boy, “ya shi ne faruwa mutu (He was going to die)”

“And he still will…” Senator Kazeem cut in. “You will get your well-deserved revenge Yusuf, all we want from you is to make the call and bring Husayn to us, we will take it up from there while you do whatever you wish with the boy”

The plan was to lure Husayn to Abuja, to the open when he would be trapped. he would call his uncle and demand that he comes to Abuja to a specific venue at a particular time or his son dies.

“My Uncle is not stupid; he will not just walk into a trap”

“He is desperate to get his son back, but I know he is not stupid, he has men that are loyal to him here in Abuja, even in the Army…but leave that to me, I have that planned all out”

So Husayn would be told to come alone and make no contacts or the boy would die.

“He may give up the boy, Husayn would rather see his son die than allow himself to be caught. All I wanted was a sweet revenge, for him to see his son blown to pieces like every other live he had sacrificed for his madness” Yusuf said

“…And we are giving you the opportunity to kill two birds with one stone, get your uncle arrested and put away forever, set your father free and have your pound of flesh with the boy”

Yusuf looked at the boy again, he was scratching on the black leather shoes of one heavy chested man who stood like a statue beside the split Unit Air conditioner. The heavy chested man kicked him off and he fall on his back, letting out a loud wail

“Shut that boy up” the senator said with a frown and the guard lifted the protesting boy and walked out of the room

“What would happen to me after this?” Yusuf asked

“Nothing…we would make sure you come to no harm, you can leave this country with your father if you so wish…”

Yusuf didn’t believe him, neither did he believe that this plan would work, he knew they would never be able to outsmart Husayn, and if this backfires, he would go down with it with these men going back to their normal lives, pretending as if nothing happened. But he had to get his uncle down to Abuja one way or the other, and he would want his Uncle to be presence when Umaru would go up in flames.

Yusuf didn’t know what to hope for, whether Allah would be pleased with him, and he didn’t care. He cared little about Allah and his demands lately, he had not observed ‘Salat’ neither has he been to any Mosque since he became a fugitive.

“I want my father released before we go on with your plan”

“Sure…, I only need to make few calls and he would be out of prison in one or two days from now”

To sa da Wava kira (Then make the call)”

For the first time in two years he found himself in the presidential villa, walking the same corridor that he had walked with Danladi the day he was pronounce the president of the Federal Republic, and about to enter the glorious office of the president where a man whom was once a friend but now an enemy awaits him.

Kazeem said this meeting was important if they must get what they want, and judging by the situation, he had no better option so there he was, about to be humiliated by Danladi once again, or the other way round.

A security guard announced his arrival to the president and Ushered him in. Mr. Party chairman sat on the expensive cushion in the intimidating office and watched Danladi gave orders and bark like a pit-bull over the phone.

“Sorry my friend…one cannot help but get angry often these days” Danladi hissed while Mr Party chairman nodded with envy

“you know” Danladi started, relaxing his back on the chair “Sometimes I wish I could just forget all this and go on vacation where I will be alone with my family” he chuckled

Yet you will run for a second tenure” Mr Party Chairman would have said “I can understand” He said rather

“No you don’t my friend…believe me, you don’t want to be in my shoes, with all these men hanging around you and the press waiting for you to sneeze…its hard work” Danladi cut in

Mr Party Chairman hated him the more, he knew what Danladi was trying to do, rubbing his own failure on his face, reminding him who the boss was at the moment.

“Hmm…I guess I don’t Mr. president”

Danladi laughed louder “What would you want to drink hmm? Tea or coffee?” it was a mockery to the British culture of always offering tea or coffee to visitors, “You people that have travelled to Oyibo countries, you always drink tea and coffee, but here eh…it is beer and hot drinks” Danladi laughed more “Anyways, I was joking…I actually have tea and coffee here”

“No thank you” Mr party chairman said, not sharing on the joke.

Danladi said something over the phone and a lady came in, in less than a minute she handed Mr president a cup of tea and walked out. Danladi sipped from the cut and smacked his lips

“I want my teas prepared on my watch, one may not know who would be paid to poison him one of these days” Danladi looked straight into his rival’s eyes. He drank again and said; “Yes you wanted to see me in person”

“Without your bodyguards”

Danladi gave him a long look, Mr party chairman sensed fear in his eyes which vanished immediately “Of course” Danladi said and waved the three military men in the room off.

“I need you to release someone for me” Mr party chairman said

“Why would I want to do that?”

“You owe me favors which you have not paid Danladi…”

“As far as I remember, I owe you nothing Lamido”

Both held each other’s gaze for a short while, Mr party chairman, Lamido succeeded in checking his temper and restraining himself from flaring up

“Okay, you have been trying to put an end to the numerous bomb attacks and crisis going on under your administration…”

“Attacks you and the likes of you are the brain behind…”

Dickhead” Lamido wanted to spit at Mr President’s face, “I don’t know what you are talking about…but I am here to tell you that we can end this crisis once and for all by releasing one man from the prison”

“Who is this man you are so interested in and why are you suddenly offering to help me?”

“Let’s just say…I have a personal interest, and the man in question is the man linked with the Abuja twin Bombing last year”
Danladi raised his eyebrows in shock

“See” Lamido continued, adjusting his weight from one buttock to the other “We know who is behind those crisis, even the Abuja bombing was master-minder by this same madman and we have gotten a way to rope this man and drag him to the guillotine, all you have to do is to set the wrongly accused person free”

“What role did you play in all of these Lamido? Why do you suddenly decided to be a knight?”

“Do you want to clear your name and administration while restoring the people’s fate in you or not?” Mr Party chairman asked, ignoring Mr Presidents’ suspicious look and questions

“What is your price my friend?” Danladi asked again

“For now, enjoy your glory…I will name my price when I am ready to play politics again old friend”

It was becoming a routine, she going with the good Young doctor to the hospital, where she would disappear inside her office and bury her nose in many files that piled on her table before she would resume, until she goes to go see ‘them that has the freedom of the mind’ what she called those the world call ‘mad’. her name was Kafaya,

“Are we all not mad in this country?” Kafaya would say each time she returns from the hospital, kicking off her shoes and massaging her toes.

Kafaya has kept her word, aside periodic muttering of incoherent words and withdrawal attitude, Ifeoluwa was looking up and there was hope for her, though she sometimes would not recognize Ukwuoma.

On her part, Ukwuoma was getting used to the city of Abuja, and the comfort that came with it, though she still heard voices in her head and saw her lost loved ones, but Kafaya said it was normal for people who had traumatic experiences like hers. What did she call it? Schizophrenia.

One day she had gone to the market and had followed a man thinking he was her Kunle, only to realize she couldn’t trace her way back no matter how much she had tried, she had sat on a pavement and cried like a baby, she couldn’t even remember the name of the street Kafaya told her she was staying, thank God she had it written on a piece of paper and was tucked somewhere in her purse, a good Samaritan was able to get her home. She was ashamed of herself that day like every other day she had followed those voices.
Sleeping has not been without nightmares either, but the bed was comfortable.

‘it will pass and you will be fine’ Kafaya always say to her and she believe her.

EPISODE 29

O ye who believe! The law of equality is prescribed to you in case of murder: the free for the free, the slave for the slave, the woman for the woman…” Quran 2:178

In this case it was a woman for a man. His young wife has killed one of the faithful and she has to be punished for it, the ultimate punishment is death, that is called ‘Qisas’ in Islam and he must see to it that it was done.

Somehow he felt his young wife didn’t commit the crime, but the fool had decided to keep mute like a dead donkey. His followers await his judgement, they would want him to do the right thing and so he must.

The stubborn girl was the list of his problem now, as he gave a final call to those he needed to contact, he was assured that nothing would go wrong tomorrow. Major Usman was answerable to him and was ready to put his job online for Allah.

Husayn knew this whole game would turn to his advantage. All he needed was to call the right people and they would be ready to die for him. So tomorrow would be the day all would be over, he would get his son and send Yusuf to hell.

“I am a master planner” he said to himself as he stood on his praying. He needed to connect to Allah before embarking on this journey.

By taking Yusuf’s life, he would be proving to Allah and his Prophet that he was worthy to be transformed into glory when he would finally join them in paradise. The death of his son wouldn’t have bothered him, but he needed to raise someone who would continue this jihad against ‘Kafirs’ (Unbelievers) he needed to keep his bloodline alive.

“The blood of a Muslim who confesses that none has the right to be worshiped but Allah and that ‘I am his Apostle’ cannot be shed except… one who reverts from Islam and leaves the Muslims…

Husayn read from ‘Sahih al-Bukari,9:83:32’ it was an assurance of his acceptance by Allah, he was doing Allah’s bidding according to the holy-book: Yusuf has betrayed the brotherhood and has turned against him, as far as Husayn was concerned, his nephew has left Islam and has now become a ‘Kafir

“He must be killed and I will take pleasure driving a dagger inside him myself”

Allahu Akubar” he muttered as he faced ‘Makkah’, raising his hand to his ears and shoulder. He opened the Quran again and read the ‘Surah Al Fatiah’.

Husayn needed to concentrate but it seemed to be difficult, his heart was panting heavily and his thoughts were racing, what he had ahead of him weight like a heavy stone around his neck.

Yusuf had called him and had demanded he come to Abuja early enough to prevent his son from blowing up with others in a destination he was yet to disclose till tomorrow. It was supposed to be a race against time, if he would be able to locate the venue and find Umaru before the time, he would be able to save his son and Yusuf would be gone for good.

But Husayn had his own plan which he had already set in motion since morning, the more he thought of it the more it excited him. He was not his weak father, the old Imam would have gone on his knees and beg, but not him.

Tomorrow he would prove once again that he was invincible, and would leave a memory in Abuja as he would leave part of it in ruins.

*

Major Usman knew the Imam was asking for the impossible. He would have done what he was ordering him to do but things have changed and his hands were tied.

“It is time to prove your loyalty to Allah…” Imam husayn had said over the phone.

“I am sending Agents Waziri and Tanko to you, give them all the support they need and make sure they are not followed or traced. Allah needs his message to be delivered in the capital city and you must make it happen, don’t bother about the casualties, they are little sacrifices for the conversion of unbelievers…”

Usman was supposed to deliver the two suicide bombers and the parcels they would carry to two different locations with the military vehicle and some neutral Army men who would not understand what would be going on.

The Idea would be to distract security agents with the chaos while the Iman and some of the other members of the brotherhood would meet Yusuf where ever he said and finish the business.

This would have been a simple task for Major Usman few days ago, but not anymore. He was being monitored by higher authorities.

“We know your affiliation with this secret Islamic sect and the roles you have been playing…” The man had told him

“you will not only lose your position, but we will make sure you witness the gruesome murders of your wives and all your children, even your two sons studying in Ghana…” the Man who had walked into his office like he owed it, said to him calmly

“I am not scared of your threats, if I die…I die for Allah…’allal ilaha illallah’” Usman had shouted

But the man saw through him, he knew that the major’s heart melted in fear at the mention of his family “Shut up!” The man had ordered, reading his fear “We both know you cannot imagine your own death not to talk of that of your family members…so why don’t you sit your ass, bring that miserable hand of yours down and let us talk how you are going to play by our own rules”

Major Usman was trembling as he looked at his phone, for the first time he was going to betray his master the Imam and would betray the brotherhood. If the plan went wrong, the Imam would kill him without a blink. His third wife was heavily pregnant, his first daughter just got married to the son of the CBN governor, while his first son was about to bag his Doctorate degree. He couldn’t risk all that, his family would not forgive him even in after life.

So to save his family, he has to take side. He dialed the number given to him by the man, he waited for someone to pick up, drumming his fingers on the polished wooden table and looked at the florescent bulb in the office as it flicked off and on

“Yes” came the deep voice

“He just called”

“Good, keep him hoping, do not make him doubt you”

“Okay sir”

“Then set our plans in motion” the line went dead

He would receive his brothers from the brotherhood tomorrow, the would say their prayers to Allah before they set out for the divine assignments, the Military vehicles would be used but not to kill anymore, he would deliver the brothers in cuffs to his own boss.

“You will receive double honor for this and nobody will hear the part we played in it” the man had assured him.

“Ka zai mutu… (she will die)”
“Za su kasha ta… (they will kill her)”
“tara da sanda a ta kai (with a rod in her head)”
“Ba wanda zai cece ta (nobody will save her)”

It was like a soft song she sang to herself. One would not understand her words unless one strained the ears. She would sing and rock herself back and forth like a pebble being rolled on a smooth surface.

Wanda kake Magana game da? (Who are you talking about)” Kafaya had tried to understand the girl but she kept on singing her song with horror in her eyes

“I don’t Understand; she must be referring to someone” Kafaya said to Ukwuoma when they got home that day. Ukwuoma had also tried to persuade Ife to tell more but the girl was in a world of her own.

“I was separated from her for some months, I cannot tell what happened to her all those while”

“She must be referring to someone…but who? Kafaya muttered. In a time like this, she wished that the free mind could be caged to a particular playback where what she sought would be unveiled by the coherency of speech.
