The Beginning

I returned last month from London to Nigeria to handle some personal business and I needed a car. Even prior to my return, I have been frequenting the auto section, making enquiries about this, with interesting discoveries.

Basically, I noticed there are about 3 major sources of getting second hand cars here; namely, Nigerian used, Cotonou, and elsewhere (Europe, America, etc) each of these sources comes with pros and cons, as everything else in life but one common trend runs through them all, the prices are unusually high.

So I wondered why....

I had a chat with a couple of auto gurus here since I know very little about the industry. No need to mention names but I learned a lot from them.

Cotonou option have become an expensive gamble, thanks to "next level" trigger happy custom officers. Nigerian used cars are mostly quarter to death jalopies, meaning that to get good cars, one has to look elsewhere.

To register on any of the major car auction sites in Europe and the US, cost almost an arm and a leg (only registered members can bid for available cars) not to talk of other sundry (and sometimes unjustifiable charges) imposed throughout the car buying process.

All these, including the dealer's profit margin, get passed on to the end user

With the benefit of my knowledge of car prices in the UK (albeit Right Hand Drive cars) it feels like a rip off to pay some of the price quoted on available cars here

So I decided to study the supply chains of used cars a little closer and found that contrary to popular belief, Left Hand Drive cars are very much available in the UK. I didn't know this prior to now because I never bothered to find out as there was no need to.

The Good News

For the past week or two, I have been scouring the left hand drive car market in the UK and found out that it is possible to get good quality and durable cars from the UK for reasonable prices, far better than what obtains elsewhere

Several websites dedicated to UK based left hand drive cars and available and I just got a car I wanted through one.

From time to time, I will be posting available cars I consider good bargains for anyone interested. One thing you can be sure of with regards to UK products is high standards and durability, they do not compromise at all when it comes to quality.

To start with, the car on my profile is a 2005 Freelander (Auto) it's a left hand drive. It's a clean vehicle (not reported as stolen or a write off, etc valid MOT)

Price breakdown is as follows, directly from the owner who I chatted with earlier:

£2500 car price
£1650 shipping and clearing via container (not RORO) meaning that you pay and just go to the Lagos office of the company and pick it up, all for less than 2 million naira

The only other charge will be about £100 to transport the car from Crystal Palace where the car is, to Essex where the shipping company is located.
