weyreypey:Little bit of this, little bit of that. Rationalmind probably doesn't get as high as 26mpg, but it's not outlandish for someone to get higher mpg than the the EPA rating, even with our poor petrol. |
| Re: The Official Car Comparison/Recommendation Thread by weyreypey: 4:04pm On Mar 10, 2019 |
rationalmind:Please quit the confusion. We are discussing the acura MDX!! |

HeavenlyBang:Aha I see. |

HeavenlyBang:It hovers between 25-26mpg, it even sometimes gets to 27mpg ![]() |
| Re: The Official Car Comparison/Recommendation Thread by Nobody: 4:10pm On Mar 10, 2019 |
weyreypey:And I'm telling you categorically that your 15mpg highway is wrong. 20mpg is easily achievable with our fuel as long as he drives moderately. cc: 9icetoo (Hope I got this right) |
| Re: The Official Car Comparison/Recommendation Thread by weyreypey: 4:19pm On Mar 10, 2019 |
rationalmind:300nm of torque and you want me to drive like a corolla or Micra? |
| Re: The Official Car Comparison/Recommendation Thread by HeavenlyBang(op): 4:53pm On Mar 10, 2019 |
rationalmind:9icetoo definitely doesn't get 26mpg on his 08 MDX, lmao. ![]() |

HeavenlyBang:I don't think he gets 15mpg either ![]() |

rationalmind:For him to be playing with xylene and toluene dangerous carcinogenics ...he must be getting 11 MPG on the highway!! |
| Re: The Official Car Comparison/Recommendation Thread by 9icetoo(m): 9:24pm On Mar 10, 2019 |
weyreypey:They are not carcinogenic. Benzene is but not xylene and toluene. The rings on the three hydrocarbons are different. I achieved 18.8 mpg on my last trip from abakaliki to ph. I rode alone and didn't put my foot which made me However, I got nice mpg readings without the xylene or octane boosters. I have come to realise that what made the x ping was actually the full load I had on board on my previous journeys. Full load, low octane fuel and heavy foot results to pings. Which now makes sense to me cos Gazzuz mentioned his customers who drive max don't complain about the pings. Around town, the best is get is 13.5 mpg if ph people behave themselves. |
| Re: The Official Car Comparison/Recommendation Thread by 9icetoo(m): 9:28pm On Mar 10, 2019 |
survivex:You will get about 20L/100km. I use one. No check light. And ph traffic is lighter than Lagos traffic. I choose and plan my journeys though to minimise fuel expense. Getting used to it. But you will love it. The handling and acceleration is superb. |
| Re: The Official Car Comparison/Recommendation Thread by HeavenlyBang(op): 9:30pm On Mar 10, 2019 |
9icetoo:OP is looking at a 2007, I believe. First-gen. |
| Re: The Official Car Comparison/Recommendation Thread by 9icetoo(m): 9:31pm On Mar 10, 2019 |
rationalmind:Not with our fuel and even if he applied all fuel saving techniques available. |
| Re: The Official Car Comparison/Recommendation Thread by 9icetoo(m): 9:33pm On Mar 10, 2019 |
HeavenlyBang:Second gen started from 2007 I believe. I've seen some with the production date of 2007. I don't know about the performance or mpg of the first generation. |

survivex:Great choice, very solid ride. Avoid Canadian stock...the MDX is not a car you want to buy with rust |

Greenarrow01:Buy a Toyota Corolla. |
| Re: The Official Car Comparison/Recommendation Thread by survivex: 6:58am On Mar 11, 2019 |
9icetoo:Very correct. The 2nd generation is from 2007- 2013. The fuel rating for both 07/08 are very similar. Many thanks y'all for all the well outlined technical and experiential comments. I will let you all know how it performs when I start using it. |
| Re: The Official Car Comparison/Recommendation Thread by HeavenlyBang(op): 6:58am On Mar 11, 2019 |
Greenarrow01:You'd do well to ignore BMWs, then. Infiniti FX35, Mazda CX-7, Ford Edge are your best options. I'd personally look at the Mazda. Also, a good option is the 2007 Acura RDX. Probably the best of the bunch. |
| Re: The Official Car Comparison/Recommendation Thread by Nobody: 7:50am On Mar 11, 2019 |
survivex:U WILL NOT get 15L/100km in the city. In fact stated mpg in city is 15.6L per 100km on premium fuel and at the optimum condition without ac. And all those oyinbo city driving is no where near Lagos city driving. When u put all these things together coupled with our bad fuel u would probably be ok if u get 25-27L/100km in the city without octane boosters. If u drive in the city without ac maybe u can get around 23-24L/100km. I once used a 2005 Honda pilot when has the same mpg as the MDX only that it runs on regular fuel. Car was in perfect shape and the best I could get in the city was 26L/100km. My 05 TL with smaller engine but requires premium fuel averages 24L/100km in the city. |
| Re: The Official Car Comparison/Recommendation Thread by HeavenlyBang(op): 8:03am On Mar 11, 2019 |
greenhulk:My God, that's horrendous gas mileage. 24L/100km, wtf. That's like 10mpg. |
| Re: The Official Car Comparison/Recommendation Thread by radautoworks: 8:27am On Mar 11, 2019 |
HeavenlyBang:For sure. I get 11-12 on an Rdx so he's definitely not getting that on an M. |
| Re: The Official Car Comparison/Recommendation Thread by Nobody: 9:00am On Mar 11, 2019 |
HeavenlyBang:Yes very horrendous, but that's basically crawl driving with AC on. Lately I've been making too many short driving with average speed of 7-10km/hr. That has greatly affected the mpg. Though I know it could be better because when I first got the car I was getting around 20L/100km in serious traffic driving with AC. I don't have check engine light on and car is very responsive, exhaust tips are very clean. I'll look for time for proper diagnosis Sha maybe I can save a few mpg. Those cars that require premium just don't do well with regular in terms of mpg. But on the highway mpg can double. |
| Re: The Official Car Comparison/Recommendation Thread by Nobody: 9:38am On Mar 11, 2019 |
HeavenlyBang:City driving is where these vehicles suffer, I once averaged 9-10mpg within the city pre election when there was a lot of traffic within town. It was so annoying seeing it that I had to reset the trip meter and started all over again ![]() |
| Re: The Official Car Comparison/Recommendation Thread by Nobody: 9:43am On Mar 11, 2019 |
greenhulk:It's also possible your driving style has changed a bit. From my experience, it can make a whole world of difference in gas mileage. You were probably careful and drove slowly when you newly got it ![]() |
| Re: The Official Car Comparison/Recommendation Thread by MotorGuru: 10:19am On Mar 11, 2019 |
nurey:This problem was exclusive to the 2az-fe 'phase II' engines which was fitted to 2007-09 Camrys, 2006-09 Rav4s and 2009 Corrollas. This was due to a revised piston and ring design which was to allow the use of lighter oil (5w-20). But this ended up being a disaster as oil consumption problems arose as low as 75k miles, leading to a class action lawsuit in 2014 in the US. The gear issues were identified with cars equipped with the v6 engine. Motorguru |

2013 Camry Xle or 2013 Accord Ex-L |
| Re: The Official Car Comparison/Recommendation Thread by Nobody: 10:41am On Mar 11, 2019 |
rationalmind:Yeah, possible. The driving pattern and driving conditions greatly affected mpg. But I think those TL's don't like stop and go shirt distance traffic driving especially in the hot sun and ac on. Lack of premium fuel ain't helping either. But it makes up for it in long distance. Last December I traveled with the car (300km journey) with full load in the trunk and 4 adults including me (2 plus size women) and 4 children and I still got 21mpg with AC throughout. Not bad. |
