An official of Standard Chartered Bank, Ifeoma Okeagbue, confirmed to the Code of Conduct Tribunal on Thursday that the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, was granted a loan of $500,000 by the bank as of January this year.

Okeagbue, who was testifying as the third prosecution witness in the ongoing trial of Onnoghen on charges of false and non-declaration of assets, also confirmed that the loan was guaranteed by the suspended CJN’s investments in Federal Government’s bonds and shares, among others.

She said this while being cross-examined by the suspended CJN’s lawyer, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN).

The witness, who had earlier said in her evidence-in-chief that Onnoghen had five accounts, confirmed ‎that the ones in euro, dollar, and pound sterling were domiciliary accounts and not ‘foreign accounts.’

The conversation between Awomolo and the witness went thus:

Awomolo: The defendant has a facility or loan of $500,000 granted by the bank as of January 2019.

Witness: Yes.

Awomolo: The security for the loans is his investments in Federal Government bonds and other investments such as shares.

Witness: Yes.

Awomolo: The pound sterling, dollars and euro are domiciliary accounts operated in Nigeria not overseas.

Witness: Yes.

Awomolo: The bank encouraged him as a disciplined account holder to invest in some other profit venture.

Witness: Yes.

Awomolo: And interests on these investments are credited back to his accounts.

Witness: Yes.

See the way Buhari FG is disgracing itself on this trial so far.

@Buharists, come and see o. The so called "foreign" accounts that the CJN alledgedly had are just domiciliary account and the so called dollars he has are loans gotten from a bank with his investments in shares and govt bonds as guarantees.

Ok o.....

The CJN deserves apology from everyone that had hurled insults at him over this media trial. I'm sorry, Justice Onoghen

PMB and his 'attack dogs', the EFCC and DSS, failed to do their homework properly.

They really do not have any case against the CJN, Onnoghen.

They filed up false charges against him without proper investigation.

It is now very clear that PMB wanted him out of the way so he could rig the elections with the support of INEC.

The plan was to bullied the CJN into resignation by intimidation and media trials. But they were shocked when the CJN refused to resign and eventually opted to enter the dock.

Even if the CJN eventually resign which I will advice him to do immediately after the trial, he has succeeded in clearing his name and showing to the whole world that the FGN did not act in utmost good faith in his prosecution.

The ZOmbies that swallowed the propaganda hook and sinker without thinking should bow their heads in shame! This was a man against all odds that fearlessly gave PMB a favorable judicial opinion at the 2007 election tribunal.

The real fear of APC is that they are afraid of such a fearless CJN!

As for the bolded, I'm sorry he will never resign because they will achieve their objective if he eventually resigns. I know Onnoghen as a courageous judge who always stands for justice. I wonder what is going to be the headlines in the Nation Newspaper now. The Nation Newspapers was fabricating false news on a daily basis against Onnoghen even no Nothern Media Houses ever did such damage to the man as Nation, TVC and Channels Television did.

God will punish them for trying to tarnish the man image and reputation he has built for over 30 years on the bench because of elections. We in the Niger Delta are taking notes of what some people here in the South are doing to our prominent sons and daughters

Nigeria is not worth dying for. If not for the fact that by God grace, I am a little bit comfortable and have some commitments, I would have left this country. This country don't value hard-work and honesty. The mentality of our youths and zombies is also frustrating. They are not ready to work hard to earn a leaving. To get good and dedicated employees is very hard.

The government found it easier to Lord it over Nigerians because there are a lot of Zombies who will also lick the asses of those in government without thinking!

What is happening? All the three witnesses FG presented ended up defending the CJN indirectly.

May the heavens bless for this apt & rational reply, its a hard to find one on Nairaland this days.

I understand the rationale behind your suggestion but then just like you Onnoghen has too much commitments to the Nigerian project to abandon it as of now and also considering is his age, his victory will go a long way to further empower our judiciary and strengthen it as an institution which is crucial our collective development.
