While I was in school as an electrical engineer 2011 Nigeria was producing 4000mw. Billions of dollars has been inject into this sector yet all we see is reduction. Africa is cursed, the black skin is a disgrace. No transparency in Africa.

sad the root of the problem is money!

At this point, I think it is safer for everyone to sort out his own power needs.

Get solar, good generator or wind power if it is available in your area.

If you wait for the government, you will be disappointed.
I wonder that as powerful as the Nigerian Goverment is, the people are still left to sort out basic amenities for themselves, then what good is the government to exist in the first place.

The same way we sort out housing, power, medicals, roads and transports, education, welfare is the same way the should allow the people to sort out their security. We should be allowed to buy guns and defense systems and have a fighting chance against infringement of our fundamental human rights of rights to live and right to property ownership.

Then TNC should be bundled and sold to capable private investors...I for one will promote any thing which is private driven. the record is straight on this all government owned institutions and agency always performed below expectation: formerly NITEL, Federal government owned schools, all Federal owned stadiums, Nigeria Airways, NNPC the list goes on.
The last presidential candidate that wanted to go that way is still recoveringoo

My dr Nigeria n Nigerians ar not yet ready to move forward jaree

The national power grid lost 1,770 megawatts in two days as generation fell below the 3,000MW mark on Friday, the latest data obtained by our correspondent on Saturday revealed.

The total available electricity generation fell to 2,938.5MW as of 6am on Friday from 4,708.3MW on Wednesday.

Data from the Nigeria Electricity System Operator, an arm of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, revealed that generation peaked at 4,806.8MW on Thursday.

The system operator put Nigeria’s installed generation capacity at 12,910.40MW; available capacity at 7,652.60MW; transmission wheeling capacity at 8,100MW; and the peak generation ever attained at 5,375MW.

The country generates most of its electricity from gas-fired power plants, while output from hydropower plants makes up about 30 per cent of the total.

The Executive Secretary, Association of Power Generation Companies, the umbrella body for the GenCos, Dr Joy Ogaji, told our correspondent that the limitations of the transmission and distribution networks as well as a lack of payments to Gencos were responsible for the drop in generation.

Government-owned Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading Plc buys electricity in bulk from Gencos through Power Purchase Agreements and sells to the distribution companies, which then supply it to the consumers.

The Federal Government, in March 2017, approved N701bn payment assurance guarantee by the Central Bank of Nigeria to help Gencos meet gas payment obligation starting from January 2017 to December 2018.

Ogaji said, “The guarantee has ended. Up till now there is no plan for payment to Gencos, apart from the 26 per cent the Discos are paying. Gas suppliers are not ready to accept 26 per cent payment for the gas they sell to Gencos.”

She said some Gencos had to get loans to pay for gas supply.

She added, “But the transmission network is not available to take all the power generated by Gencos. The TCN claims it can wheel 8,100MW but we know it can sustain 4,500MW.

“The rainy season is approaching, a lot of the networks are very weak. We will see a further drop in generation as the rains start because the transmission and distribution networks are very bad.”

The TCN, which manages the national grid, is still fully owned and operated by the government. The grid collapsed five times in the first two months of the year, according to the company.

When U appoint someone who studied Law to head power sector U don't expect him to perform well. Mr Fashola will continue to give excuses as long as he remains the Minister of power. He w'ld have been appointed as Minister for Justice rather.
My brother I tire for this matter. I remember clearly when Fashola was appointed to head three ministries including power, I immediately knew it was a bad move. The man was poised for failure from the beginning, like how is a lawyer expected to deliver with a portfolio that better suits an engineer or someone of a more technical background. One of my friends argued that ministerial posts are supervisory, and hence don't require the appointee to be a professional in the field. To which I still call BS!

Fashola is seriously overrated, and even as a Governor of Lagos state didn't do, and achieve as much as his successor Ambode has in just 4 years.

PMB should reshuffle his cabinet already!! Break up the super ministry FFS, and appoint one person to head the power ministry. There should actually be a declaration of state of emergency there, like why hasn't that been done already!

Until the the National Assembly removes electricity generation responsibility from the exclusive list of the federal government and give the responsibility to the states and local government, seriously we will still be running around in circles. It's seriously not rocket science. Decentralize the power sector

The poor masses shouting APC & PDP upanda will suffer it... Go to places(were politicians reside) like Garki, Asokoro, Maitama and Wuse, Gwarinpa u get 24hrs power supply, but when you come to were the masses live (nyanya, mararaba, suleja, Gwagwalada, Bwari, dutse) they are in perpetual darkness with monthly crazy billing from NEPA..
Firstly the ball stops at the door step of the ruling party that came into power with the promise to make things better power specifically secondly and most importantly there's nothing like NEPA anymore.

Generation is in the hands of GENCOS which are largely private companies. DISCOS control distribution and collection of bills, also mostly private, while the TRANSMISSION is run by the government.

He was propped up by hype and propaganda.
What did he do?Planted flowers in some areas, built some roads in mainly city centres and few towns, built a bridge and talked smoothly and he was the next best thing after sliced bread.
Four years on:electricity he has been exposed for total lack of competence;roads, few constructed, others constructed on propaganda; housing,as if that ministry doesn't have a minister.
