Then TNC should be bundled and sold to capable private investors...I for one will promote any thing which is private driven. the record is straight on this all government owned institutions and agency always performed below expectation: formerly NITEL, Federal government owned schools, all Federal owned stadiums, Nigeria Airways, NNPC the list goes on.

Are the gencos and discos not already in private hands? What difference has it made?

Where do you think I live?

The T2 Energy Centre is located in Heathrow but not a property of the airport. It is run independently of the airport. And fyi its max capacity is 1.8MW. I didn't just quote you for fun. I did because I knew you didn't know what you were talking about

When U appoint someone who studied Law to head power sector U don't expect him to perform well. Mr Fashola will continue to give excuses as long as he remains the Minister of power. He w'ld have been appointed as Minister for Justice rather.

I have always told you to stop this rubbish but you are stuck in your ways. It is 101% the governments fault, now read this maybe you would wisen up.

"Rwanda has implemented one of the most comprehensive electrification programmes in the world. In 2009 only 6% of Rwandans had access to electricity. The government’s aim is to lift this to 70% by 2018." Now that's a govt with a plan.

Let's take one of the most taxed govt institution which is the Nigerian customs, just take a look at the roads going into one of the most lucrative agency, do you get it now? Or do you suggest tax and duties be increased so that customs can do their job?

Power has to have its own ministry headed by a tested and trusted engineer with extensive experience in power generation and distribution not bundled together with road and housing and definitely not headed by a lawyer.

theoldpretender:

They can't source funding because

1.Laws force them to sell power below production costs

2.A large percentage of people and govt don't pay bills

3.Which bank would give cash under that circumstances?

being illiterate, barbaric short sighted, wicked at heart and too tribalistic is what useless citizens of Nigeria did, and quite frankly, they deserve the leaders they get, and deserve to suffer and even die, and suffer more...

because how can a human being with a functional brain support foolish leaders based on religious and tribal sentiments

it's a different case if the leaders forced themselves on the people, and the people are revolting en masse (like you see in countries like Algeria)

these useless leaders enjoy wide support, especially from their kinsmen (tribalism)

so I.don't pity Nigerians at all.

Their suffering should increase

maybe that would give them.small sense

sophsia62:
The national power grid lost 1,770 megawatts in two days as generation fell below the 3,000MW mark on Friday, the latest data obtained by our correspondent on Saturday revealed.

The total available electricity generation fell to 2,938.5MW as of 6am on Friday from 4,708.3MW on Wednesday.

Data from the Nigeria Electricity System Operator, an arm of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, revealed that generation peaked at 4,806.8MW on Thursday.

The system operator put Nigeria’s installed generation capacity at 12,910.40MW; available capacity at 7,652.60MW; transmission wheeling capacity at 8,100MW; and the peak generation ever attained at 5,375MW.

The country generates most of its electricity from gas-fired power plants, while output from hydropower plants makes up about 30 per cent of the total.

The Executive Secretary, Association of Power Generation Companies, the umbrella body for the GenCos, Dr Joy Ogaji, told our correspondent that the limitations of the transmission and distribution networks as well as a lack of payments to Gencos were responsible for the drop in generation.

Government-owned Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading Plc buys electricity in bulk from Gencos through Power Purchase Agreements and sells to the distribution companies, which then supply it to the consumers.

The Federal Government, in March 2017, approved N701bn payment assurance guarantee by the Central Bank of Nigeria to help Gencos meet gas payment obligation starting from January 2017 to December 2018

Ogaji said, “The guarantee has ended. Up till now there is no plan for payment to Gencos, apart from the 26 per cent the Discos are paying. Gas suppliers are not ready to accept 26 per cent payment for the gas they sell to Gencos.”

She said some Gencos had to get loans to pay for gas supply.

She added, “But the transmission network is not available to take all the power generated by Gencos. The TCN claims it can wheel 8,100MW but we know it can sustain 4,500MW.

“The rainy season is approaching, a lot of the networks are very weak. We will see a further drop in generation as the rains start because the transmission and distribution networks are very bad.”

The TCN, which manages the national grid, is still fully owned and operated by the government. The grid collapsed five times in the first two months of the year, according to the company.
