Basically, only one third.of people connected to the grid pay. Government owes the discos 1 trillion naira. Discos cannot charge market price for power thanks to the law setting them up. So, at the end, there is a cash shortfall and money builds things Either bills go up, every house is metered, and everyone pays, or power is going to be poor forever. Nigerians need to wake up to the realization that power is not free of charge 6 Likes 2 Shares |

the root of the problem is money! At this point, I think it is safer for everyone to sort out his own power needs. Get solar, good generator or wind power if it is available in your area. If you wait for the government, you will be disappointed. 1 Like 1 Share |

Interesting She added, “But the transmission network is not available to take all the power generated by Gencos. The TCN claims it can wheel 8,100MW but we know it can sustain 4,500MW. “The rainy season is approaching, a lot of the networks are very weak. We will see a further drop in generation as the rains start because the transmission and distribution networks are very bad.” The TCN, which manages the national grid, is still fully owned and operated by the government. The grid collapsed five times in the first two months of the year, according to the company. |

SarkinYarki: Well the truth is this.is not Buhari or Jonathan fault. Many Nigerians and government agencies don't pay their power bills. then the law that set. up. discos forces them to charge bills less than the production cost. Discos cannot pay Gencos who cannot pay gas companies. No cash, no improvement 1 Like |

On the political front this is four years of this administration. It has barely done anything to stimulate capacity. At ghe end of this coming term it will have spent half of the time the PDP was in office. My projections are not looking good. It has been all hot air and rhetoric., scant action. On the industry front, I think it is time to think outside the box to sort out the energy crises. We need new ideas and legislation to completely open up the industry to attract investment. We cannot afford to wait on industry operators who are unable to source investment funding to expand capacity on one hand and a general public who are unwilling to pay right the prices to make power production a viable business on the other. 1 Like |

Willed042: The discos and Gencos are all private firms. The problem is they are not allowed to charge bills above the production cost, meaning they cannot make profits Add the fact that only one third of Nigerians pay their power bills, and government agencies owe 1 trillion, and banks are reluctant to give loans to the discos and Gencos, and you see the problem Plus, which new investors are going to come when the laws virtually dont allow them make a profit? 5 Likes 2 Shares |

Reference: They can't source funding because 1.Laws force them to sell power below production costs 2.A large percentage of people and govt don't pay bills 3.Which bank would give cash under that circumstances? 1 Like |

BIGGIE121: If that would emancipate the country from the new trend of political slavery. Ask yourself why an average Nigeria politician will rather invest all his resources into an election rather than into industrialization. Ask yourself what Nigeria would look like if private investors are given the power to generate, transmit and distribute electricity. Reason most of our graduate are not employable. 3 Likes 1 Share |

But mr fashola;as an opposition was there yapping that stable electricity was not rocket science and that the only for Nigeria to enjoy stable power was to vote out pdp. I wonder if that remark was the reason baba made him minister of power(darkness).. ...... Can someone please tag Mr Raji to this thread, we are still in darkness oo... Even though my house has power right now self. 1 Like 1 Share |

theoldpretender: Thanks for that sir but then it is yet to be bundled to achieve its maximum drive. Give them the power to generate, transmit and distribute and see the best of the private sector. They know how to recoup debt and will continue to research on how best to minimize incidence of electricity theft. Prior to this time many subscribers know how to short cut NITEL when still as a public utility agency. But you can not short cut GSM operators to make calls for free. 1 Like 1 Share |

theoldpretender:The first step to take in solving our power crisis would be to connect everyone to a prepaid meter. You are making sense. Nigerians have to pay for power now, the discos will become richer, Gencos will become richer as well, they will be able to increase generation capacity, eventually power will become much cheaper. But this is something we should have done a long time ago,, right now it might be too late. I wonder when our generation and distribution capacity will eventually catch up and completely cover our exponentially expanding population. 1 Like 1 Share |

theoldpretender:we have be told that when the bill go up we'll have constant power supply but the bill went up and yet nothing changed, it's getting worse, Generation has its own problems but transmission and distribution are the major problems because of lack of infrastructures. Let them meter every house and you will see they will sit up and provide all what the people need 5 Likes |

Going by some comments here, I think we may be heading in the right direction, another benefit of democracy. A few years ago the overwhelming blame for poor public services has always been borne by government, especially the poitical class and the President in person. Having changed government for quite a while now for what they thought was a better option and seeing scant improvement, introspection has kicked in to the real challenges facing Nigeria. Today folks realize just how important the citizen is as opposed to the government in power and how much responsibility the average citizen bears in making things work well in the country. Today folks are waking up to the reality that government is not a magician that conjures up the indices for life and living. That to make things work money has to be made and invested. That to make money the average citizen has to pay his share. That government is simply a collation centre for the productivity of the totality of Nigerians... that we are poor because the average citizen produces far less than he needs to consume... that we donot have stable electricity because we are not paying properly for it..... That we can pay is without a doubt. We buy and operate electricity generators and manage our consumption remarkably efficiently but when public utilitues are on we leave the lights on all night long and the airconditioners at home on all day long while at work but when the bills come we kick, cheat, steal and in some sad cases rwact violently against those offering us a service that costs a lot to setup and maintain. We just hope in time to come that as our elected superhero governments flounder at the public demand to square circles we will take another look at how much we pay for fuel, how much we pay for education, how much we pay for healthcare, how much we pay for insurance and how much we pay for law enforcement amongst many others and decide as aa nation to raise our productivity to enable us escape from this jungle mentality and live decent lives similar to the climes our people often flee to for refuge and to escape reality... but where they pay the bills... the right prices. 2 Likes |
