I think Smolett was let off the hook because the prosecutor may have come to the conclusion that it wouldn’t have been financially prudent to waste tax-payer money in trying a non-violent defendant.
The city of Chicago has more pressing law enforcement problems, especially incidents of violent crime.

But, of course, I’m speculating here. It is up to the DA to provide a full explanation for the decision.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel has been going off on this Smollett case saying it's injustice. He's been on CNN and has had a press conference with the Cook County PD. The Cook County PD Chief of Police is also upset the case didn't get to court. Jussie better hope his matter isn't pursued.
