What Is The Relationship Between Benin, The Country And Benin City In Nigeria? by MyVILLAGEpeople(m): 7:29am On Mar 31, 2019
There is no relationship.

At least not the way you think.

Benin Republic is a francophone country formerly known as Dahomey (Kingdom of Dahomey). The Beninese have no relationship with the Bini of Benin city. The word ‘Benin’ is a corruption of the word ‘Ubinu’ which was an ancient city that traded with the Portuguese who were the first Europeans to step into the hinter region known as West Africa.

The country was named after the Bight of Benin which is a body of water in the Gulf of Guinea on the Western African coast and which in turn was named after the Benin Empire (which was the predominant empire in that time). The new name Benin was chosen for its neutrality because ‘Dahomey’ was a reflection of the former Kingdom of Dahomey which covered the Southern parts of the country and did not represent Porto-novo, a rival state to the South, Atokera in the North-western sector, nor the Kingdom of Borgu in the North-eastern region.

But there is a connection.

Oduduwa is the Father of Yoruba land and he settled in Ile-ife which is the seat of the Yoruba Kingdom. All people of Yoruba descent trace their lineage to him.

The Bini connection to Oduduwa is a bit more complicated because of the supremacy tussle between the Ooni of Ife and the Oba of Benin (Benin City) as to whether the Bini originated from the Yoruba or the Yoruba from the Bini. There are mythological and historical conflicts to these accounts.

Without stepping into the murky waters of this conflict, (which is also not the purpose of the question), what is clear by the Bini and Yoruba is that; Oranmiyan, the son of Oduduwa, was sent to rule Benin and he had a son known as Eweka I who became the first Oba of Benin.

Ergo, it can be said the relationship between Benin Republic and Benin City is the shared ancestry between a major Beninese tribe and the Kingdom of Benin.

Historians in the house, your contributions is also needed. Thanks.

Lool. But according to history it's true na. You can refute it, if you have a concrete claim.

There is no conflict whether Yoruba originated from Benin Kingdom or vice versa

It was very clear that Oduduwa was a prince from Benin kingdom sent on exile

The Yoruba don't want to accept this historical fact because of their ego. This won't change the truth that the prince of Benin Kingdom was the Father of Yoruba people.
The Oba of Lagos who is a descendant of Benin Prince have confirmed it so many times
Yoruba people should accept it and be proud as descendants of the Great Benin Kingdom just like every other group in the Niger Delta and stop the so called yeye conflicts.

Oduduwa is Yoruba and Yoruba only

Oduduwa has nothing to do with Benin. Also Oba oranmiyan is the first Oba of Benin not Eweka. ORANMIYAN was d first to Introduced a Yoruba title to Edo-state.

Go to Edo State any towns that are OBA by title, the natives bears Yoruba names. e. g Afemai, akoko Edo and some parts of Benin town

That Oba of Lagos is a descendant of Benin Prince doesn't necessary means the Lagos Yorubas(Awori) are descendants of Benin.

Likewise it is safe to say, that Obas of Benin are descendants of Oba oranmiyan doesnt means Benin people are Yoruba people.

The Hausas also proved that Oduduwa is an Hausa Fulani man. That he came from the northern part. (I will believe the latter than the former).

It's not true, I have never heard of Hausa people claiming Oduduwa.
Oduduwa was from Benin kingdom, it's a fact.
Instead of Yoruba people to accept the fact, they are now claiming that they didn't know where Oduduwa came from, most Yoruba claim Oduduwa fell from the sky while the Yoruba Muslims claim that Oduduwa was from Mecca, Saudi Arabia

You people should be proud of your origin

The relationship between Benin and Benin Republic is General Isidahome. The Edo war general who led one of the battle to the West.

This is quite hilarious. You believe/prefer Oduduwa as an Hausa-Fulani than a Benin prince.

Well whatever you believe or prefer won't change the fact that Oduduwa corrupted from Izoduwa was a Benin Prince named Ekaladerhan.

Oramiyan known to the Benin's as Omonoyan was the son of Oduduwa(Ekaladerhan) who was sent to take over the stool of his grandfather Ogiso Owodo after His father refused to return to Benin due to old age.

Oduduwa (according to the new Ooni of Ife) was versed in mysticism and Ekaladerhan means the one who is versed in mysticism.

This debate will continue forever, cos to the Yoruba's its about ego but to the Benin's its about facts.

Yorubas are good at lies and twisting documented facts.

When oduduwa was banished from Benin, the roads he passed is still here in Benin.

The family that wanted to take over Benin rulership, the ogiamen is still here.

Benin is east to ife, it's a fact Yoruba believed oduduwa came from the East.

Yoruba also believe he fell from heaven, oduduwa was a child of an ogiso, which means "kings of the skies".

Yoruba's should accept the facts and be proud that a Benin man discovered them
