Very simple, go to your phone settings, under security you'll see "Sim card lock" you can set your password there...

Incase the SIM block you'll need your puk to unlock it

Thanks

OP, sorry about the loss. I almost had my phone stolen on an intercity transport ... the guy was shifting his body one kind, and I kept noticing my phone was peeking out of my trouser pocket every few minutes. So I moved it to my shirt pocket to avoid stories, crossed my arms and went back to sleep.

Some banks allow you to generate a pin on a phone and send to the for authentication. They don't check the actual phone (IMEI), only the phone number which is determined by your SIM. So if your SIM is inserted into another phone, the bank will think it's still you. As somebody else suggested, SIM lock will prevent that.

No solution is perfect, but I think it helps not to put all our financial eggs in one basket so to say. I only use a token for online transactions (not phone generated PIN), and that token never leaves my house. Also, the bulk of your money should be in a savings account which you never expose.

These days too, there are thieves working with bank staff, so all bets are off.

Had the same experience early year. The thieves managed to steal 32k from my account.

I've since learnt that the first thing to do after such theft to block your line. Then contact your bank to block your account as well.

This is probably the best advice, especially for those who do everything on their phones. First thing to do when a phone is stolen is to block the line and the account ASAP.

That is why I like developed countries, you can just block your card from your bank's application, but Nigerian banks have not got to that level

Ironic that in developed countries that feature exists... which means they have thieves, in spite of their wealth...

The bitter truth is that USSD is no longer safe, ask ur bank to block it, keep your banking sim at home, if you have to use ATM outside your area , take a second ATM that has small cash, if there is need for money transfer to the account linked to the ATM from online, always clear your username and password from your browser.

Yes it's possible to steal from your account.
Even without knowing the password, some clever social Engineering can supply the attacker all details to steal.

These days, your phone is your second identity, especially when it's part of your multifactor authentication on several platforms.
what do you mean?

On the first of April 2019, I boarded an intra-city vehicle and dropped at my destination unaware that a guy sitting beside me in the bus had stolen my phone from my pocket. The bus I boarded had picked the guy on the way and he sat next to me. I had no inkling at all that he had the intention of picking my pocket though something told me that this guy's way 'no pure' as he was casting uncanny and surreptitious glances towards my direction, with a weird look on his face. Little did I know he was busy with my pocket.

It was several minutes after I had alighted at my destination that I realised that my smartphone was missing from my pocket. I used a friend's phone to dial my number and found out that the criminal had already switched it off. I resigned to fate knowing fully well that my chances of getting back the phone was slim. I however kept dialling my number till evening, it was still switched off. 6 AM in the morning of 2nd April I dialled my number again and it was ringing but wasn't picked up at the other end. After a few more attempts, the rogue switched off the phone again.

I decided to contact MTN that day to block the line, which they did. However, to my chagrin, when I went to the ATM that same morning to make a withdrawal, I found out the my account balance had changed and that the criminals have succeeded in withdrawing some thousands of Naira from my account. I rushed inside the bank immediately and blocked the account.

What I am still dazed about is how it's possible for criminals to withdraw money from someone's bank account just by getting hold of the sim card. Mind you, my phone can only be accessed via a PIN, so the possibility of them making a transfer using my bank's mobile app is ruled out. So how did they do it?

Has anyone ever been victim of such? Please share so others can learn.

Mods, can you please move to front page so others can learn? Thanks.

i always advice people, dont only pin code or password your PHONE alone, code lock your SIM cards especially dos ones you get Bank Alerts from,

sorry Man, Unstructured Supplementary Service Data [USSD] could be use in many ways to temper with your MONEY hard Luck bro, but try and ask for your statement of Account from your bank, maybe the use your money to purchase Recharge Cards or Transfer to a fake Account or worst still use it to Get Amazon Gift Cards but am pretty sure the will not use it for KONGA or JUMIA

For Christ's sakes when are the banks and cbn going to put a stop to this rubbish? @cenbank what measures are being put in place to prevent phone thieves from being able to access people's accounts. It seems too easy and convenient to access somebody's account once they lose their phone these days. This sucks tbh!
Two of my people have fallen victim of this and the banks couldn't be bothered. The most annoying part is that your bankers who can see where your money has been transferred to will refuse to go the extra mile to help you track the thief or even provide you with information to track yourself.
People's hard earned money are being stolen from their accounts through their phones on a daily basis and our banks are acting as if it is nothing.
Honestly it doesn't seem like we are ripe for electronic banking in this country.

GT bank doesn't request for pin whenever one is carrying out 'self' airtime recharge. It always bothers me why they have left it like that. I don't want to believe it's because of you recharging quickly.

Please no one should try this unless you have your SIM pack with you.
I just tried it and my SIM locked asking me to input PUK.
Within seconds my body was covered with sweat as I remembered the stress people go thru doing court affidavit just to unblock SIM.
Luckily for me after ransacking the whole house I was able to see my SIM pack

Nope it's the other way round. CALL YOUR BANK TO BLOCK YOUR ACCOUNT FIRST then you can block your line.

Sorry abt that. With ur sim, they can dial a code that would produce ur BVN I guess they proceed from there. I have password both on my sim and on my phone. My sim can't be use on another phone without password.
Say what you know.

You can't take money via bvn alone.

Password protect your SIM. It's very easy to do.
They try the code multiple times, sim gets locked and the only way to access the sim is to enter the PUK number.
Is it possible for one to password sim without its pack?
