any time your phone is stollen, immediately contact ur bank to block all transfers via sms, mobile app, any form of transfer or u go on facebook or twitter and drop ur account details and instruct dem to block all transfers, that will solve the issue don't think of the phone u are attached with just get a someone nearby to borrow u dat phone and send the request to them on facebook or twitter just tell them why u blocking all transfers, the same also apply when u lost ur atm

If your Network provider will be kind enough to give you a record of the numbers they made transfer to in their office, then you can start from there to track him.

Sorry abt that. With ur sim, they can dial a code that would produce ur BVN I guess they proceed from there. I have password both on my sim and on my phone. My sim can't be use on another phone without password.
But like op case, his phone Was stolen with the Sim, so does the sim password make any difference?

Very simple, go to your phone settings, under security you'll see "Sim card lock" you can set your password there...

Incase the SIM block you'll need your puk to unlock it
My question is if they have access to one's phone with sim card, will the Sim lock make any difference?

Most of telecom network providers in Nigeria have 247 customer service that can always attend to at anytime. I know the situation is confusing because it has happened to once. However, I was lucky as I ensured my phone SIM was block immediately so they could not access my bank. So that's the first thing to be done. Immediately you tried your number and discovered it was switched off and you were very sure it was stolen you would have just called your network provider to block your line. Also, it's good we take precaution sometimes.. Leaving alerts on your phone and having all your details on the same phone will give them an idea of the bank you use.. So sometimes we can just delete alerts or better still request for email alert.. And other time operate our mobile apps on the phone where with a number different from the registered in our bank. Sorry for the loss...

All they need to do is removed your sim from your phone, next time don't only password your phone also password your sim... they only have 3 attempt before the line is block.

He probably make use of USSD to transfer your money

What if you haven't registered for USSD with that phone?

On the first of April 2019, I boarded an intra-city vehicle and dropped at my destination unaware that a guy sitting beside me in the bus had stolen my phone from my pocket. The bus I boarded had picked the guy on the way and he sat next to me. I had no inkling at all that he had the intention of picking my pocket though something told me that this guy's way 'no pure' as he was casting uncanny and surreptitious glances towards my direction, with a weird look on his face. Little did I know he was busy with my pocket.

It was several minutes after I had alighted at my destination that I realised that my smartphone was missing from my pocket. I used a friend's phone to dial my number and found out that the criminal had already switched it off. I resigned to fate knowing fully well that my chances of getting back the phone was slim. I however kept dialling my number till evening, it was still switched off. 6 AM in the morning of 2nd April I dialled my number again and it was ringing but wasn't picked up at the other end. After a few more attempts, the rogue switched off the phone again.

I decided to contact MTN that day to block the line, which they did. However, to my chagrin, when I went to the ATM that same morning to make a withdrawal, I found out the my account balance had changed and that the criminals have succeeded in withdrawing some thousands of Naira from my account. I rushed inside the bank immediately and blocked the account.

What I am still dazed about is how it's possible for criminals to withdraw money from someone's bank account just by getting hold of the sim card. Mind you, my phone can only be accessed via a PIN, so the possibility of them making a transfer using my bank's mobile app is ruled out. So how did they do it?

Has anyone ever been victim of such? Please share so others can learn.

Mods, can you please move to front page so others can learn? Thanks.

Probably recharged through the line, especially with MTN sending that stupid recharge directly from your bank account message every dn time one's airtime go low. Same thing happened to me last year. I found out at the MTN office when I went to retrieve my line, and was told that there was about 3k airtime on the line. I quickly rushed down to bank, requested for statement of account, and realised those fools have been recharging through MTN code. MTN is really stupid with that move.

The best security is "SIM Lock" feature where your PIN must be entered to access your SIM (which they can easily put into another phone to get your BVN).

How do you do the SIM card lock? With your phone features or with the network? Education please.

Say what you know.

You can't take money via bvn alone.

Yes but with your bvn they could have links to some criminal bank workers who would provide them with all your acct details which they could use to activate or access USSD.

As a good forensic investigator I can then trace all the accounts that received the loot in less than 30 minutes.
The. Working with d police we will grab him in less than 12 hrs and his sorry ass will be left to rot in kirikiri maximum prison.

Where then is the smartness in stealing what is not yours in the first place.
hahahah, say na forensic, sometime last year, a friend of mine got a random debit alert of 305k, turns out the money was transferred to a Skrill account and a Bitcoin wallet.. how? nobody knows, we he didn't even bother stressing himself, cos it was untraceable, people bad ooo, forget

Yes now, people are not saying the truth of the whole thing, how can someone know your BVN and use it to withdraw someone money in the bank. There no way someone can withdraw money from someone account by stealing the person phone except if you have your bank details on the phone and which serious person in useless country like Nigeria will go and store his or her bank details on the phone, when you no dey mad.

1).How will the person know your bank
2).How will he know your account number
3). How will he know your name
With just BVN he withdraws, na so bank dey operate abi na wetin.

If you have a mobile app installed on your phone then they know your bank already. There's a standard query that provides the BVN too. If you're yet to configure ussd transactions on your account they can do it since they are in control of your phone/SIM card. The operative word is 'if'. A confluence of probabilities.

Set lock on your SIM and on your Phone to stop all these nonsense. I don't think they transferred money from your account except you saved up your banking transfer pin code in your SIM card. i think the guy simply loaded credit to your SIM from your account. This one does't require a pin if you are doing it on your registered banking SIM. like for GTB, just dial *737*5000#, provided its the registered SIM for your bank account, it will load immediately. This is why He only used up some of the money in your account cos you have a daily limit on recharge at N10,000 for some banks.

Even if one set sim lock on the phone, does it stop them if they are buying airtime with the phone?

I've read every single reply and no one has explained how the poster's money was withdrawn. Almost 95% of replies was based on cheap "common sense" and "emotional handicap". Now my view about all this drama.

I still stand by my view that no pickpocket can withdraw funds from a victims account without carelessness on the part of the victim and/or collaboration with bank officials. Now all bank ussd transactions require a PIN for transactions. I think some banks may not require a PIN for self airtime purchase but a PIN will be needed to purchase airtime for a 3rd party number. I laugh when I hear gullible pipo say withdrawals can be initiated via a BVN or simply knowing a victims account number.

Unless the author saved sensitive details about his bank or ATM card in an unprotected notepad app or sms message...or he was forced at gun point to release the details of his account...or he stupidly clicked an email link to a professionally designed "spam webpage"...I don't think the author is telling us the whole story

My question is if they have access to one's phone with sim card, will the Sim lock make any difference?
If your SIM card is password and your phone is password, when such incident happens their first target is removing your sim from the phone since they can't access phone... they'll inside your sim into another phone, in the process where your sim was passworded, once they on the phone your SIM it'll demand for password... if they make 3 attempt the SIM will automatically block itself, it can only be unlock with your PUK...

How do one password the Sim?
Does the Sim automatically lock after certain minutes if unused? Thanks
Go to your phone settings, under security you'll see SIM card lock, set your prefer password there.

it'll lock itself on this occasion:
If you restart your phone,
if you off your phone,
If you insert the sim in any phone.... until you provide the password.
