continued... While the unprofessionalism of many of the boat drivers is a major factor contributing to the rising cases of tragedy on this water channel, the unwillingness of some of Bonny’s leaders to have modern and safer ferries replace the rickety boats dotting the landscape is another dimension to the problem, our correspondent discovered during the visit. Even though individual boat owners may not be able to afford the cost of a modern ferry, partnering with oil firms and other multinationals in the region, who have already shown interest in such collaborations, would have addressed the issue. The fear of losing their investments under this type of arrangement, is what has forced those in the business to maintain status quo, endangering lives in the process, Saturday PUNCH discovered.Mynd44, Lalasticlala, OAM4J |

May our blessings not become a curse.. Most blessed oil regions, are nothing to write home about. no usable amenities..too bad..while the parasites from the other side are reaping where they did not sow. |

Any Rivers governor that can build a bridge to connect Bonny Island to Rivers mainland would not be forgotten in a hurry. That island has so much untapped potential that is being buried because it is cut-off by the water body. |

I always feel bad for residents and indigenes of these riverine areas. They are really passing thru alot. Can't something be done? This is quite disheartening. |

Sad tales, I wonder how some humans decide to be a pain to others. How these kind sleep at night is a mystery to me. |

RockHard:Yes but this should not be a state project, rather a federal one. Such a project would cost so much money and would eat into the state's allocation. I wonder why it is not being looked into. I am from Rivers, Bonny is my LGA. I am there now. This Island produces a high percentage of the crude oil being used and exported,we are exploited. Yet we have to beg for amenities that doesn't even represent a fraction of what we give. Same goes to all Niger Delta communities, feeding the nation and we are we are poorly fed. About 2 years ago, actually a contract was given to Julius Berger, work is on going, hopefully it would be completed by the end of the year. |

Only LNG boat is safe along bonny waterways, the amazing things about bonny island is that there is 24hrs electricity. Although bonny town is Okey and enlightened but some villages like finima are still very backwards, bonny island is the lga with largest gas deposit in rivers while onelga is 1 st and oyigbo (my lga) is second in terms of crude oil deposit. |

I always pray throughout my journey whenever I'm going to Bonny. Anyone calling Rivers State Governmenet to build a bridge is just myopic. This is a project that should be embarked by the FG, don't know how far they've gone with the Bonny-Bodo bridge spearheaded by NLNG. |

I remember plying that Bonny sea sometime back. My first encounter with the waves really sent chills down my spines. The government needs to do something fast in creating access road to that island. |

Daviddson:Yes bonny is like New York if you are talking about NLG quarters and the other areas occupied by both local and multinational oil companies. The major issue here is a safe means of transport to the island. This is an island that host the biggest LNG terminal in the whole of Africa. I believe you've heard of Bonny light crude before. That's the most expensive crude exported by Nigeria today and it's exported via Bonny export terminal. You should ask yourself what has the Federal government done to connect the people of this island to mainland Nigeria. |

Daviddson:it is only lng RESIDENTIAL area. That place is a paradise. villagers are not ready to help the situation. rejected ferries few years ago. over loading, over spending and lack of life jacket are main causes of accident. what government should do: enforce use of life jacket by all passengers, check excessive of boat drivers provide security against pirates |
| Re: Bonny: Oil-rich Island Where Moving In And Out Can Claim Your Life by Nobody: 7:06pm On Apr 06, 2019 |
FG needs to secure the waterways. There are so many private companies ready to invest in the transportation business of PH-Bonny and Bonny-PH, but security is their major issue. The Army post at Okrika is more or less dead. |

capitalzero:What they really need is a bridge. I was based there for about a year, and it was always dangerous leaving or returning to that island. |
