I will be brief as possible.
Have been on nairaland since 2006 thereabout. NL has helped me in lots of ways, gaining admission into UNILAG, helping my business even making my first million. Seun is truly God sent.

Have met quite a number of good guys on NL, my personal doctor, even mechanic, yes mechanic.

Sorry for that intro but been appreciative of this platform.

Fast forward I contacted this Bluefly of a guy after seeing his adverts and his astonishing website, I said to myself Yes this guy must be so good. As an African proverb says, if a person is recommending a cloth you first check the one he is wearing. The guy has a good website ( http://blueflydesign.com.ng/) Alas ! Not all that glitters is gold.

Contacted him 13th March 2019, fast response, good presentation, he seems to know what I want, I told other partners, this guy is our missing link. Fast forward he requested for 100,000 for the brief and 70percent deposit . 70,000 sent 28th of March 2019. Confirmation came in few minutes after payment was sent ( thank God he confirmed). Oya let’s move on to the design, WhatsApp group was set up between our team with him.

Oya designer you’ve not bought domain name....story started... I will buy tomorrow, card rejected.. okay ooo. No wahala

After one week Oga no dey pick call once na after 3 times, he doesn’t respond properly to WhatsApp. Oh he might be so busy with coding so I thought.

Domain later bought 1st of April. Thank God it was still available.

Basic questions that needed to be asked weren’t asked. Payment gateway details (nil) site map(nil) color (nil) even Email and phone Number to be used He was just full of excuses.

Okay after calls and all Oga said we will see a preview of what he has been doing so that we can know he is not joking. Good news. Okay when sir. He said Sunday 14th March 2019 4pm. Na so we all glued to our laptop to see our new baby project. All partners were physically in my house so we can review together. Alas Uncle Excuse came again sorry it will be live around 10pm, everyone left disappointed. At least we confirmed twice before the meeting. I cheered them up 10pm is just around the corner now let’s have group call afterwards now. They all reluctantly accepted. I begged Oga please don’t disappoint me again.

10pm came no show again, everyone started pointing at me, Bluefly no gree pickup. After several attempts Oga dropped message as usual “deepest apologies...bla bla preview can be checked now”. That’s nice my guy all sins are forgiven. Everyone went to check the website, OMG it was CRAP guy only used a dead theme, no professionalism, no work done, nothing.

We’ve been waiting for weeks for only theme demo. My head was off. Was very annoyed.

Oga oya pick calls, called several times no pick up, oh he is busy oya send messages, nooo. He is doing you cannot catch me . Oh I see. Oya where are you let’s have a meeting so that I can know what to tell my other partners. Guy no respond, traced the address on his website at 2, Osho Street OPEBI IKEJA , no one knows him there.

Went on NL only to see someone calling him out that he is a thief bla bla. I felt somehow.

I can share alll details of our chats herein. The guy is quite unprofessional, and the poorest of customer service. He doesn’t feel bothered about anything. He misses your call he doesn’t feel the need to call back at least he has gotten his money.

Sent him a message all I want is a refund .

Some guys have made it their goals to spoil the reputations of genuine Developers on this platform. Why would you take what you cannot do in the first place thinking you're smart? Some people are busy loading and awarding curses into their future as if it's Olumpic trophies. To the op, just report him to EFCC and get him tracked down. When you allow a criminal go free, he will do worse to another person tomorrow.

It's quite unfortunate Peeps like these keeps Spoiling business and the mindset of Potential Clients.

Have hears a few of such bitter stories and always feel sad both for the victims and we the Innocent Ones who ended up having a hard time dealing with such clients as they throw all the Frustrations on Us.

Hunger has made Most people claim being Professionals Overnight. And some clients ends up falling for the Fancy Wordpress websites they showcase.

Even our personal website is almost an eyesore just because we've been busy with clients projects but still we deliver good works.

But have seen few run away just because Your office or Looks don't meetup with the Standards they expect.

I would suggest you involve the Relevant Authorities as just talking alone wouldn't help.

They might even contact you again using a different user details and you thinks it's another Saint.

What a bad experience from a bad developer spoiling the good one image, as they say one day for the thief, one day for the owner. But Op try most times don't to get 100% belief on someone you haven't seen. I'm a web developer and I can boldly tell you that I don't take advance more than the cost for hosting and buying domain. Please be careful next time.

the bluefly.com.ng is a WordPress website, the owner just downloaded a nulled theme and installed it on the site..

I usually don't expect much from WordPress developer that only knows how to install themes and plugins, most of those themes come with onpage builder..

He can't build a custom website...

These are the kinds of people that spoil business for us..

There are plenty WordPress developers out there and most of them don't even know css to begin with..

Always use builtwith.com to filter the site of the web design agency, if its WordPress don't fully trust it.

Good web design agencies won't use WordPress for their own website, they will code it ground up..

Wait, you call yourself a web developer and your website is WordPress, what rubbish?

Please next time filter the website..

Oh, there are ways to hide if a website is built with WordPress, but don't worry only few know that trick...

Stay safe guys

A lot has been said already. Nigerians have trust issues, unless you know someone who can vouch for them, never ever take them for their words. We have sincere people here too but majority of them are full of shit so it's best to just play safe and do business the strict way. I personally request any potential client to hire me on Upwork if it's my first time with them and been a Top Rated freelancer, I get 100% of the fee unless they have been on the platform before which makes everything easy for me, I just go and review their feedbacks and deal strictly with them if convinced.

I don't know why a developer would take a job he/she knows can't be done in the stipulated timeframe and later end up putting up trash. If you can get details about the developer, I advise you report to the nearest police station ad 70,000 is quite a lot of money.

First off, I get your point. Being a wordpress dev however, I'm annoyed. Yes, NL web designers are scammers but it doesnt mean everybody is.

In recent years I have probably used a free theme 'Astra' to create miracles on wordpress. Mostly because I work the code in the theme editor myself. Does this mean I am incompetent? No. It means I am a miracle worker.

I used to design websites on nairaland. I am glad in all those years I delivered great jobs. No one ever called me a fraud. I didnt even have a personal website then.

If we keep on allowing these 5k website guys to run their thing on NL. The scam reports will keep on coming in.

Before you hire a web designer from NL, check their profile, when they joined the platform, their initial posts.

No just give anybody your money.

OP; I for like help you finish the job (FOR FREE) but as long story already dey, make I no volunteer. Just take heart and find someone you can trust to do it

True talk.

But using wordpress doesnt make you a quack.

As most agencies use wordpress but with their own custom built theme like ckdigital.net.

But checking the guys site blueflydesign, I can see he even used the themes demo content on the page. And frankly almost all the so called agencies I see on nairaland tow the same path. Only problem is that clients wont know, all they will see is a shining website that is the handwork of someone else.

What most of the clients fail to understand is that there is a big difference between a web designer and a web developer.

Most of these guys advertising on nairaland only know how to install wordpress, download and install a nulled theme and install numerous plugins and that is it.

Once the client wants something that cant be achieved with the default wordpress installation, problems and stories arise. 90% of the complains I see on nairaland are usually along this line, where clients wants a project and designer tries unsuccessfully to force wordpress to do what it can't.

Before you hire a developer dont just ask for links to past works, but ask details about the projects. What framework used, what plugins used and even ask for a github repository.

Now a developer that doesnt own a github account shouldn't be calling himself a developer. That us one easy way to differentiate the quacks.

From the github account you can view the type of projects and codebase he has worked on.

You just reminded me of that thread where the OP asked for how to build an affiliate reward system on wordpress. It took almost 3 months for an incorrect answer to come out. I'm sure they just googled 'WP theme for Affilaiate reward system' and since they couldnt find it they went hush. The guys on here annoy me with their threads. Another one said he will design website for 2,500. I swear I was scared.

Another one applied for a position when I needed help, I designed wireframe and told him to work front end and the idiot flopped. Just avoid them

For some that can manage to drive few traffic from social media, u go see dem dey raise dust say " I am the grand mother of SEO" cheesy. Ask them for their blog link to see how their posts are resting on the big G front page, u go hear this wicked line" I am not a blogger but a SEO expert " grin.

Sorry your experience... The calls ignored is really baffling. You can try reaching out to your bank or someone there to help you with his address though they'll not disclose without authorisation but report that the payment was made in error and see what can be done.

I wish you good luck and hope to help you should you need other web support

These are one of the reasons I can't ever bring my business to nairaland ever again. Potential clients doesn't trust website developers/designers here again. And I don't even blame them... with all these "WordPress installers" calling themselves web designers. Once you know how to install a WordPress theme here on Nairaland, then you are a professional website designer.

I'm not saying professionals are not here, but there are just very very few of them. But the whack-jobs in here are more than 95% compared to those that really know what they're doing. You as a business owner that need a website shouldn't just give up on getting a good website designer. You can totally avoid those nut-jobs. There are some traits you can use to identify them.

1. Most of them are new here. Their accounts are not more than a few months. You'll even save yourself from scam because some of them even created the account mainly for scam. I know we are still talking about unprofessional web designers but some are actually here to scam you of your hard earned money.

When you finally pick anyone, still do your findings before handing the job to them. Search their names on the forum to see if there are any report of scam or if they're really as good as they say they are. You'll surely find out. Nairaland saves everything.

2. A supposed web designer should have a website... An appealing one at that. Before you give your web project to any designer or developer, ask to see his own website. Seeing how good his own website/portfolio is, should already give you an idea of how well he'll be doing your work for you.

I always check the business websites of the web designers here on the webmaster section. I can tell you that most of them are just WordPress themes they downloaded and installed. I even saw up to 3 websites that has exactly the same design, because they downloaded an exact same themes and installed it without any customization. Even the demo content (write-ups) from the demo were all included on the designers' website. (The theme is 'webs' or something like that)

I can boldly say that my personal/portfolio website is unique and you can't find the exact same design anywhere else. And it's not built with WordPress, (used WordPress for the blog-page though) just html, css and js.
I'm not saying that WordPress is not good. CMS are actually very good and I do use WordPress very well... I use Bootstrap Framework too. CMS are even preferable because they save you the stress and makes your work easier. But you should learn to create your own themes to suit your needs.

3. Ask for his past web projects. As a website designer, it's not possible to say you don't have any content in your portfolio. Even if you're just starting out, you should have at least 2 or 3 websites you've worked on by yourself during your learning process. It doesn't necessarily have to be for a client.

So, as a business owner looking to get a website for your business, make sure to look out for these traits in a so called web designer before letting him handle your project.

The newbies indeed are mostly disappointing and taking off trust from prospects for people like me who's been here.

Any designer with no website of his own or just one project in the last one year isn't worth it

Julius2214:

Hahahaha.
I spent many years to master web development.
I know how difficult it is to build a site from scratch...
One nonsense wordpress installer will come and be spamming threads with his own comments claiming to be there God of web development.

I go just tire.... Abi na me dull pass ni

Portsvessels:

Sent him a message all I want is a refund .

resosdigital:

You made some great comments but I need to point certain things out.

Firstly, Wordpress can do just about anything So if you are unable to program Wordpress to achieve a result, means you are to blame.

Nowadays, we are kind of shifting away from Wordpress not because we don't know how to use it But because there are better and much more optimized ways of achieving same results.

When we use Wordpress for medium projects, it's mostly as a Framework hence we have done some very complex projects with just a single Plugin.

Once a developer (based in India) saw it, He just couldn't keep wondering how that's possible.

WordPress is just PHP hence you can leave it's ways of doing things and do it your way which would give you much better freedom.

In House, we have our own framework we use for Expensive projects while projects like Blogs, etc below 30,000 naira has to either be simple php or Wordpress but even then, we rarely used Plugins except the client's budget is discouraging enough.

As for github, not every One who owns a Github account is a Developer and I have seen a few who has One but knows Nothing.

Even ran into One whose Github account comprises of so many Projects. Issue is all of them were Cloned (Copied).

Even I myself don't use Github. We have our self hosted one which we use when there's a need for Group work.

Now does that mean am not a Good developer just because I don't use Github. Maybe it's because of comments such as these that has made Most to automatically Open a Github account before downloading their First Programming Tutorial.

At the end of the Day, most clients Falls for nothing BUT Packaging. They love not just Flashy Website But how How fine Your Office is, your location and your Dress sense.

+ How sweet you Talk (Lie).

Trust me, these are what most clients Falls for.

And when Most don't even know what they want to begin with, then they end up being at your Mercy.

Wow. This is really really annoying.
OP I can imagine how you feel.
I hate scammers with my whole life.
I feel like beating nonsense out of the scammer's body.

@OP (Portsvessels), is there a way you can get someone else to set him up?
Like set him up with a mouthwatering project he cannot refuse, but that will require him to appear physically to sign a document, and then catch him and deal with him satisfactorily with police or military chaps.

Alternatively, report to the police and then let the police notify the bank that he is wanted as a scammer, and let the bank place a hold on his account, (possibly across several banks sef using his BVN to track his accounts). Then when he appears in the bank to find out what happened to his account, they notify the police and then bang! They catch am! Just like they do for yahoo guys.

I really really hope you catch this guy and teach him a bitter lesson, one that he will hold dear for the rest of his life. So that other scammers can learn from his example.
I hate scammers with passion!

And meanwhile, I didn't see where you published his name and number in your post.
Pls publish his full details, everything you have on him, his phone number, his full name, his picture if you can it, his account details, everything.
Post it on this thread and everywhere you can.

So that anybody that googles the bastardo's name (forgive my Spanish grin) will see it clearly that he is a scammer.
You might be saving other people from falling victim to his scams by doing this.
