Fellow building industry workers, it's time we start finding solutions to some things in the industry. Sometimes When We Work To Cast Concrete on block holes To form lintels, parapets, mass concrete or other works. We notice that concrete falls into block holes and if not blocked with bricks and sometimes the non conventional means of using cement bags, this is a big waste of cement, sand and chippings, plus time and money for labor. We should think of cheap but workable alternatives. I think we should start making polystyrene chips to fit into block holes. I think the prices of the polystyrene filling will be minimal to compare the cost of breaking blocks to fill in block gaps or using other things. I think polystyrene filling will be easier and faster to place on block holes before iron reinforcement.

spyder880:Nice one when i did a little project in Edo State i observed something and thinking is going to be best solution to this, what is it? Solid block, using solid block before casting of lintel & decking beam is the only solution. |
| Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by Chekitaut: 4:29pm On Apr 16, 2019 |
Little amount of solid blocks is required. |
| Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by spyder880(m): 7:33pm On Apr 16, 2019 |
Chekitaut:The only problem is that we don't have 9" solid blocks. |
| Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by Chekitaut: 8:35pm On Apr 16, 2019 |
spyder880:Easy to create hand mould. |
| Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by Takoro13(m): 10:26pm On Apr 16, 2019 |
Chekitaut:Using broken blocks is considerably less to moulding 9" blocks. |

Takoro13:This is true, however down south, people are glued to 6 inch solid though |

spyder880:I am no engineer but if introducing 9'inch solid block will not affect the structural integrity of the building. Then, wouldnt this be a case of constructing a moulding pan for 9' inch solid ? |
| Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by spyder880(m): 7:03am On Apr 17, 2019 |
Badgers14:That may not solve the problem, the weight of a solid 9" block will be nearly 40 kg or more. Who can lift it on a height of 3 meters or more? Workplace safety dictates that we choose options that will not endanger the health of workers. 6" solid is hard not to talk of 9" solid. |

spyder880:A bag of cement is 50kg Oga Spyder880, 20blocks solid 9 is produced from 1bag, 1½ hollow 9" makes up 1solid 9" |

spyder880:It is not hard to mould since you just need to remove the internal part of the mould, especially if using hand mould. The only problem i see is the weight. It could be as heavy as over 1½ blocks. Also, since foundation hollow blocks are required to be filled with lean concrete before casting DPC, is it not cheaper to use solid blocks instead for entire foundation courses, lintels course and roof beam course? |

Chekitaut: Spyder880 is correct, a 9inches hollow block is about 23kg and it will weigh more if it is solid. |

Good evening house. The engineer handling my house wants the soak away and the septic tank to be on the same level without step down. Pros in the house, is this advisable? |

segzy14:Oga segzy, I am digging a septic tank and soak away of 12ft deep which is going to be divided by a partition. I was thinking the SA should be around 9/10ft deep while the ST should be 12ft but he said both should be 12ft without stepping down. Pls is this advisable? |
| Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by Nobody: 10:32am On Apr 18, 2019 |
boyestic: The depth is specified in the structural drawing. |
| Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by Nobody: 10:33am On Apr 18, 2019 |
bobkezel: 12feet depth for the soakaway and the septic tank is fine. |
