HYPED 2019 MOVIES THAT HAVE DISAPPOINTED (PART 1).

- Glass: Yes, I know I'm going against the grain here, but this conclusion to the Unbreakable trilogy is terrible. It dragged, and the ending was f**king horrible. It's comical how much exposition Shyamalan utilized to keep the shoddy story going. Unbreakable deserved better than this. The only highlight is James McAvoy. Dude's one hell of an actor. Night Shyamalan is an unmitigated fraud.
- Captain Marvel: Decent-ish, but I expected better. What bugs me the most is the fact that they never bothered to explain her powers. Also I find her incredibly boring.
- Pet Semetary: The novel introduced me to Stephen King's writing, and I've been a fan ever since. Damn thing was the scariest book he has ever written. Anyhoo, this remake is a dumpster fire. The worst crime a horror can commit is be more boring than scary.
- Triple Threat: How could a film with so many martial art veterans get it so wrong? Watch this movie and find out.
- IP Man: Legacy: Entertaining but I dunno... I expected more, I guess. Solid on the martial arts front, weak on everything else. The flimsy plot is just a bridge connecting the eye catching fight scenes to the next. Not a compelling watch like the legendary trilogy.

Shazam


As a casual movie goer, I've only seen a couple of new movies this year, and, have regretted them wholeheartedly, esp with the economy being what it is. If I'm gonna throw away my money, it'd better be on something meaningful. Anyhoo, after much mental gymnastic with myself, I agreed to give Shazam a shot since it has good ratings and reviews and whatnot, and man... THAT. WAS. FUN.

The movie has the best comedy I've seen from DC in like... ever. Really an A- stuff. Glad to see my guy, Zack Levi finally snagging a big role, and blowing it out of the water. He has really come a long way since "Chuck". Also, all the jokes were hits. The part where Billy and Mark Strong were yelling across a mile of open air had me dying.

I hope DC continues with this light-hearted tone like they did with Aquaman as well. I much preferred them to the darker tones of their previous titles, with the exception of TDK trilogy of course. DC is certainly on a winning streak atm. I'm hyped for "Joker" more than ever. September can't come soon enough.

- Doorman: His power is that he can become a portal that teleports someone anywhere with the small limitation that it needs to be on a wall, and can only lead to a room adjacent to where he currently is. Bottom line, he just becomes a door. Thats it.
- Batman, seeing as his superpower is being a superhero without a super power.

What are your biggest movie peeves? I have quite a few

- Cars exploding in car wrecks: Cars don't explode that easily in real life. A fuel tank is made from a reinforced metal, and it will take something pointed and sharp to rupture it in an accident, and even when it is ruptured, it'd still take a light source to ignite the gasoline. Bottom line, if you survived a car wreck, you're relatively safe inside the wreckage until you're rescued.

- Fight scenes between one guy and multiple assailants: Don't believe everything you see in movies. In real life, if you get in a fight with multiple persons, they're not just gonna wait for their turn. No sir. They will 100% rush at you at the same time with sticks, knifes and any weapon they can get their hands on, and if you don't run away as far as you can, no matter how skilled you're in martial arts or any sort of close contact combat, you're gonna get butchered, guaranteed. That's the reality.

- Accuracy of gun discharged with one arm: In movies we see people shooting other people with deadly accuracy whilst holding a pistol in each arm. In real life, it's very different. Firearms have something called kickback/recoil/knockback that forcibly jerks your arms away from the target at the moment of discharge. Sometimes the kickback can be so extreme that you may end up blowing your brains out. Using two arms - one for holding the gun, the other to steady the arm holding the gun - will effectively eliminate the kickback, steady your aim, and thus, achieve the accuracy you want.

- Hacking with few keystrokes: In movies, we're made to believe all government hacking can be done with few keystrokes. In real life, hacking is not that simple. It's a gruelling, and finger cramping work. It can take days to even go past the first firewall on a DoJ portal, and even at that, the hacker's anonymity isn't guaranteed. A hacker at some point of hacking can unwittingly broadcast their IP. Hacking is a dangerous business and not at all glamorous as Hollywood tries to make us believe.

- Women running and fighting in high heels: In movies, we see women in high heels proceed to kick ass. In real life, a high risk movement will most likely make the high heels to twist away from your ankles, thereby, spraining your ankles, or worse, snapping them.

- The Sexy badass chick trope: In Hollywood, the sexy badass chick has been done to death. Whatever happened to gritty looking badass chicks? What is so repulsive about that? We need more Furiosas in Hollywood abeg. For the benefit of those that don't get the referral, Furiosa is a co-protagonist in 2015 multiple award winning post-apocalyptic film, Mad Max: Fury Road. She's one armed, the antithesis for sexiness.

- The protagonist plot armour: It pisses me off when the antagonist can easily kill the protagonist, but conveniently doesn't, to protect the plot.

- Whatever Mark Walhberg appears in.: I hate the guy. Terrible actor, terrible director, terrible producer, terrible writer. The guy has the proverbial kiss of death. Anything he touches turn to sh*t

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom


The plot is meh. The characters don't really have all that much to do besides running for their lives, or hatching ludicrous evil plans, and even more ludicrous decisions involving gigantic, living death machines. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad movie at all, but it's not a great one either. Overall, if you like the franchise, and enjoyed the first one, you'll probably dig this one too.

The Man Who Killed Hitler And Then The Big Foot



- Okay, first of all, the name is straightup hilarious. When I first saw the name of the film , I knew I have to see it.
- 2nd: The premise and plot are very different from the title.
- 3rd: This subterfuge worked against the movie.

I walked in blind expecting an hilarious action flick. I mean, the trailer and the name hinted as much, right? Nope, it turned out to be something completely different... worse, something completely serious. This is not a fun flick at all, this is a _fucking history lesson. WTF!

Overall, the movie is painfully slow, and poorly done. Wish they had gone more with humor and tone the title suggested. Would not recommend.

The Wind

If you have ever wondered how a western would look with some elements of classic horror, this is it. It's a slow burn, and heavily dependent on the cinematography (like any western, really). It's atmospheric and does certainly induce tension, but there is something about it that screams low budget. It undermined certain scenes that would probably scare someone shitless if there were better lighting, visual effects and sound.

Overall, it's a decent budget horror western that is well written that could have been more if not for the low production values.

Sleepless Night



Desperation is a reckless kind of frustration. It's one of the most under-appreciated attributes a protagonist can have. Desperation makes people dumb, but also makes them bold. It creates an air of urgency that can't be matched. So you can imagine what desperation can do to someone if gangsters attempt to kill his loved one, and he has the skillset to do something about it.

Overall, this is a low-key actioner, with plot line we might have seen before, but impressed nevertheless with solid blend of style and visceral action. For fans of John Wick and Taken.

HIGHLY ANTICIPATED MOVIES OF 2019


- Avengers: Endgame: unofficial conclusion to MCU phase 3. Has come and gone, and inspite of tremendously high expectations, the the MCU flagship took it in stride, and more than lived up to expectations.
- Shazam: DC latest intro. An unpretentious superhero comedy. Exceeded expectations.
- Captain Marvel: Carol Danvers origin story. Didn't quite meet the fan's expectations amidst all the controversies surrounding the release, albeit going by the box office numbers, it's another home run by MCU.
- Glass: Unbreakable trilogy final chapter. Shamalayan kinda _fucked it up like I knew he would. A very anticlimactic ending 1MO.
- X-Men: Dark Phoenix: Jean Grey's story.
- Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: Quentin Tarantino has an impressive track record in Hollywood. You can always expect his star studded films to do very well. More so when you realise that marquee stars like Leo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt are the headliners of this latest satirical piece. July can't come soon enough.
- John Wick: Chapter 3: The ending to the whole saga may become a victim of it's own success. Expectations are extremely high, and naturally, fans expect Chapter 3 to match or exceed the excitement it's predecessors achieved. Here's to opening it will pull through.
- Toy Story 4: An unnecessary addition to the wildly successful trilogy IMO. Here's to hoping this one won't ruin the legacy.
- Lion King: Life-action adaptation of the iconic animation.
- Joker: The origin story of DC universe greatest villain.
- Spider-Man: Far From Home: The official ending to MCU phase 3. Debuts on July.
- Terminator: Dark Fate: This franchise ain't going away. At this point, people behind it don't give a _fuck anymore. Let's see how this latest addition goes.
- Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: An origin story about the franchise most iconic character.
- Men-In-Black: International: It's anticipated more out of curiosity than real excitement.
- Brightburn: A life action superhero horror. A refreshing prospect. I hope it does well.
- It: Chapter Two: The return of the evil crown, Pennywise.
- Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw: The F&F franchise continues...

I felt like I was watching Avatar at times, yup, the visuals were that good. The script is typical James Cameron; cliche, serviceable and decent characterization. The worldbuilding is amazing. The action is bonkers. Where the basic and predictable story fails, the visuals and action sequences make up for it. It's really a very stylish film and a worthy adaptation of the manga source material.

Overall, it suffered from the uneven pacing and soundtracks, but the visual storytelling was overwhelming, and ultimately wins over a problematic script.

Good visuals, but nothing out of the ordinary. If I am to list every slightest decent visually aethetic film I have seen, this list will exceed 20 films.

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum



Okay, just had a blast watching arguably the best action movie of the year (so far). It has it's ups and downs ofc. I'll start with the ups first.

The Good: When it comes to uninterrupted fight scenes, this chapter is the best of the pack. No shaky cameras, no millions of cuts per second. Only pure entertaining fighting. I mean, I witnessed John Wick execute kills with a frigging book, an axe, horses, and knifes for crying out loud. Don't even get me started on that scene with the dogs... My goodness! Explaining it here won't do it justice. You gotta see it. _Fucking awesome, folks!

The Bad: The plot is kinda weak though. There are a lot of discrepancies, like how could John take a lot of damage like he did, and somehow walked it off with nary a scratch (the scratch being a fingerless)? That's some thick plot armour _shit right there. The worldbuilding aspect is also very underwhelming. I expected a scenerio where John is been forced to fight off a bunch of unique assassins in order to stay alive, but instead I got one where he mostly fought the same gang of assassins over and over. Also, the plot ended up where it started; John alone, and against the high table, and the fact that they still want him dead.

Overall, this film was everything it was trying to be, and delivered in spades, but it's also the weakest of the three because the plot went nowhere and only brought us full circle to where we started. If there is one real positive to be had here, it's the fact that there will be a chapter 4.

DIRECTORS THAT HAVE MORE WINS THAN LOSSES IN THEIR MOVIE CAREER

- James Cameron: The most obvious name on the list. The man is on a long streak of wins with no losses, so far. His most popular movies are The Abyss, Aliens, Terminator, Terminator Judgement Day, True Lies, Titanic, and Avatar.
- Ben Affleck: This man has only directed 3 movies in his career, but they have all fared very well in the box office, as well as been generally well received by movie critics. I think the fear of ruining his perfect record is stalling him from directing another movie. His movies are Gone Baby Gone, The Town, and Argo.
- Alfonso Cuarón.: The Mexican with the golden touch. This man is ridiculously consistent that it's crazy. Most popular films: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Gravity, Children of Men (one of favorite films of all time), and Roma.
- The Coen Brothers: This Filmmaking siblings are at the pinnacle of their game, and are the living example of the height "The Wachowskis" would have attained if they hadn't allow their eccentricities and sex change to overshadow their once fledgling filmmaking careers. Most popular movies: No Country for Old Men, True Grit, The Big Lebowski, The LadyKillers, Gambit, Unbroken and Bridge of Spies.
- Martin Scorsese: Another obvious name on the list. Everything I have seen from Martin Scorsese has been amazing. Known to collaborate with Leonardo DiCaprio a lot. Most popular films: Goodfellas, Gangs of New York, The Departed, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, The Aviator, Shutter Island, The Wolf of Wall Street, Silence, and The Irishman (2019).
- David Fincher: The master of practical effect and red herring. Most Popular films: Se7en, The Game, Fight Club, Social Network, The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo, Panic Room and Gone Girl
- Martin McDonagh.: One of the best noir fiction writers/directors right now. His movies: In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths and Six Shooter.
- Quentin Tarantino: Carved a niche out for himself by exclusively writing and directing crime satires. His films are known for their rich and witty dialogue. Most popular: Reservoir Dogs,Inglourious Basterds, Kill Bill vol 1 and 2, Django Unchained, Pulp Fiction, The Hateful Eight, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019).
- Chris Nolan: Well known for his mindfucks, the man is a master of practical effect and subterfuge like his mentor, David Fincher. His most popular movies: Momento, The Prestige, Inception, TDK trilogy, Interstellar, and Dunkirk.

Bad Boys For Life (2020)



A fun script that takes itself just seriously enough for genuine stakes. The new characters were actually lovable, and had great chemistry with Will and Martin.

It’s funny, it’s bloody. Good action. Original score. Great references. Just enough nods to Michael Bay's directorial style without imitating it. Very visually pleasing all around - Just perfection.

One gripe though; the son twist wasn’t that twisty - it was clunky and nonessential, but fortunately, didn't undermine the script a whole lot.

Overall, definitely a fun movie.

Birds of Prey (2020)



Very so-so. Felt like a sanitized version of Deadpool. The R-rating was unnecessary. The mediocre action scenes did not do anything to earn that rating. The dialogue wasn’t crude enough either. Ironically, a PG-13 rating would have done wonders for the story and action scenes.

Margot Robbie delivered. Harley was good, a tad vexing, but electric more or less. I just wish DC would stop trying to turn her into a female Deadpool. The constant narrating got old very quickly. She’s a psychopath villain for crying out loud. Trying to turn her into an anti-hero is never gonna gonna work.

Overall, it's a very uneven movie that could have been so much more.

The Gentlemen (2020)



Typical Guy Richie movie.

Fast moving. Ambitious storyline. Solid casting. Decent use of music and bits of embellishment. Super stylish with integrated graphics, etc. The writing in general was unique. I liked how he pitched the movie within the movie. It was kinda meta, and just worked well for me. It was geniunely twisty and fun.

The performances were great. Colin Farrell and Hugh Grant chewed every scene. Interesting to see McConaughey take it easy, and let Farrell/Grant run away with the film. Refreshing.

Overall, a really fun movie with good acting, good laughs, and an interesting story.

The Invisible Man (2020)



Disquieting music, deliberate wide angles creating a feel of voyeurism, and the gripping suspense from start to finish all contributed to make this movie magical for me. The story was very good, with loads of little twists and turns. Solid performance from Elizabeth Moss.

Leigh Whannell strikes again. In case y'all don't know already, he's the director of Insideous: Chapter 3 and Upgrade (2018). This guy knows how to turn movies of 7 to 11 million dollars into runaway hits.

Overall, it's not without flaws and whatnot, but a solid entertainment nevertheless.

Motherless Brooklyn (2019)



This movie would have been a lot better with a better director. Some shots are these amazing noir-feeling compositions, but then others are plenarily flat, and all were edited together very poorly. The entire plot meanders, there was no urgency to anything. It really kills the murder plot it follows, as there seems to be no pressure behind the mystery.

Performances were pretty good. Edward Norton's character has Tourette, but he doesn't let that stop him and tries to live as normal a life as possible. Mbatha-Raw and Dafoe were also great in this.

Overall, I enjoyed it for the most part, but like I said at the beginning, the movie would have been a whole lot better with an experience director at the helm. It was Norton's directorial debut, and you could tell.

The Way Back (2020)



Felt like two movies in one. Builds itself up as a sports movie, but ignores virtually everything relating to sports afterwards, to dwell on alcoholism. Great character study in a plethora of ways, but I feel like many people going into this expecting a feel good recovery story, are going to be a little disappointed.

Having said that, The portrayal of alcoholism was precise, and had absolutely no glamorization. Ben Affleck was great, gave one heck of a slam dunk performance, and did most of the heavy lifting.

Overall, it's a very grounded story that is not about redemption, but coming to terms with one's own shortcomings.
