We make this weak argument way too often.
Islam is not a solely pacifistic religion, but neither is it a religion of violence and war.
It tells us to fight (metaphorically, intellectually and/or physically(when absolutely necessary)) when oppressed and threatened, and to make peace and live in tolerance with others and to spread da'wa.
Groups like ISIS and Bokoharam choose to take up only parts of the message and the Qur'an where it suits them and ignore the rest for the intent of forwarding their political agendas and are reincarnations of the khawarij.
